Dashlane Review by Cloudswave
Dashlane is a cross platform application for storing passwords and other sensitive information. It includes cloud sync between all users’ devices. This software has appeared recently, but it has already gained a significant market share. Today, Dashlane is one of the most trusted password managers.
Why do you need password manager?
If you are reading this article then most likely you enjoy all the benefits of civilization: the computer, the Internet, and mobile devices. Maybe you are visiting a lot of sites, are registered with many online services and as a result use much more passwords than you can remember.
In addition, each of your passwords should consist of at least six characters that are a combination of numbers, letters, and symbols if allowed; contain letters in both uppercase and lowercase; and also don’t contain user’s name, its part or words from the dictionary. And it is also a good idea to change passwords every 3-6 months. Is it possible to remember a batch of strong passwords that are constantly changing? Most people will reply NO!
But this doesn’t mean that you have to use simple password for all sites and don’t care about the security. Just try to use a password manager instead.
How Dashlane can help?
Founded in 2011, Dashlane combines the functions of password manager and password generator. Due to this it allows to protect numerous logins, passwords, PIN-codes for electronic payment systems and bank cards, license keys for different programs. It is also possible to edit this information and to sync it between multiple devices, to export and import saved data from other password managers.
Copying passwords to the clipboard is done in one click, and then you can insert them into online form. In addition, the program may enter the passwords into forms on different websites automatically. Passwords that are stored in a Dashlane’s database are encrypted with Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), one the most successful asymmetric encryption algorithms.
The Dashlane software is compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS.
Free vs Premium
While it is possible to use Dashlane for free as long as you want, if you have more than one device you may consider the Premium version instead. Free users may install the desktop client or mobile app on all available devices, but the data doesn’t sync with them. Moreover, the backup to the cloud is not working within free account. Also you can’t use the web version of Dashlane to restore the password.
In other words, Dashlane free is like the old school password manager of the 90s. It has the convenient digital wallet for storing the sensitive data; it offers the autofill feature and the password generator. Some users don’t trust the cloud, especially when it comes to the passwords and credit cards info. If you are one of them you definitely don’t need the premium account.
But if you want to store data in the cloud, to sync with all devices, to get the web access to the data everywhere (even if you don’t have any of your Dashlane devices with you), then consider buying Premium for $39.99 a year (discounts apply if you pay for 2 or 5 years). Besides, each new Dashlane customer may try premium features for 30 days.
How to start using the Dashlane
The registration process will not take much time; everything is easy here. You need to enter a username, email address and create a master password. Dashlane will analyze it and warn if it is too weak. This is the one and only password that you need to remember, so be careful when choosing it.
During the registration the software will offer to add the browser extension. If you will agree the browser will be restarted. You will then have to confirm the installation. Dashlane will also grab the stored passwords from the browser, so the Passwords category will not be empty.
Are you familiar with Evernote interface? Dashlane is like the secure Evernote for the passwords. Here you have different categories for storing sensitive information. For example, «Personal Info» section is used for entering name, email, address and other user info that then can be used during online shopping. «Payments» section is used for storing the credit cards and bank accounts data. «Ids» section is for uploading the digital copies of passports, driver licenses etc. There is also «Secure Notes» section for storing any info that needs to be hidden.
Like Evernote client, Dashlane has handy search option. Just start entering the keywords and you will instantly get the matched items from the different sections.
What’s about the security?
Security is in the first place here. If you use backup and sync options, Dashlane encrypts all information on local device and then uploads it to the server in unreadable form. When you try to access a password while the program is running it asks to enter the main password. So you don’t have to worry if the app is closed or not. But if you use software in a safe environment and don’t want to enter your master password each time just check «Always Authorize» box. In this case Dashlane will copy the passwords or fill in the forms on websites without any requests.
Additional secure options
But there is one more security option that can be enabled in the website card. Here you can check «Always require Master Password» box for the websites that require additional protection. The additional protection can also be added for the autofill the payment on the webpage. Besides, the software may log out the user automatically if he is inactive for 30 minutes, 1 hour or other time period.
One more security feature is two-factor authentication. It may be used when the user adds the new device or even each time he logs in to Dashlane. This type of authentication is safer than standard authentication, because it makes impossible to log in into the account (or to add the new device) just with master password. Additionally the mobile device should be used for unlocking. It is possible to use this feature on Android, iOS or Blackberry device. The additional app is required (Google Authenticator for Android and iOS is the most famous one).
Dashlane not just keeps users’ passwords but also analyses them. Here is the «Security dashboard» section where one can find out if there are any issues with passwords. Dashlane tells how many of user’s passwords are weak, compromised, reused or old. The software also calculates the security score and offers to change some password to get even more points.
Password sharing is one of the greatest features of Dashlane. While many passwords are confidential there are some that need to be shared. For example, if several people manage the company’s Facebook page and each of them needs the account password. Sending such info through the email or IM is unsecure, so Dashlane is the great option.
To share the password just go to the «Sharing Center» section, choose the item and enter the other user’s email. To see the password the recipient will need to enter his Dashlane account (or to create one if it hasn’t already been done). Free account lets share passwords with up to five users while for the premium customers the number of shared items and recipients is not limited.
Access rights to shared passwords
By default the recipients have the limited rights, e.g. they can only use the shared items. There is also an option to give the full rights to some of them. But be careful because in this case the other users will have the rights to view, edit the passwords, share them with others and even revoke your access. To our opinion Dashline’s permission settings need to be revised: it’s better to make three or even four options (e.g. with the separate rights to view, edit, share, and revoke access to).
Emergency access to the sensitive data
It is also possible to share all your passwords (or just some of them) with the trustees (such as good friends or family members). But the access is not got immediately. Instead the user adds the email of the authorized person, checks what info may be shared and sets the waiting period. When the trustee makes the request for viewing the sensitive data, and the account holder doesn’t answer during this period, the trustee automatically gets the access. Thus in case of emergency it would be possible to access user’s profiles on social sites etc.
Dashlane greatly simplifies the process of personal data storing. Due to this software there is no need to remember or write down complex passwords, codes, etc. Despite the fact that the idea of password manager is not new, Dashlane uses the modern approach in managing of sensitive data. Among the most prominent features there are handy interface, smart analyzing of passwords, secure data backup to the cloud, syncing between the devices, and password sharing. And there is nothing surprising that Dashlane quickly got the loyalty of thousands users around the world.

Although I've always used Disk Utility for creating secure vaults, once I discovered Knox, my usage skyrocketed. It's unobtrusive, fast and readily accessible. Along with regular backups, secure vaults are a good addition to any workflow, especially when on the move.
