Avira is hands-down one of the best antivirus software solutions available – even the free version is far better than many paid solutions. In my personal experience, I have seen a large amount of users with considerable system performance issues caused by viruses and malware that their antivirus software has been unable to detect. They have experienced a drastic improvement in performance as soon as they upgraded to the free version of Avira. The great customer value of Avira is due to the fact that it offers excellent protection while being lightweight: the effect on system resources is minimal. Avira’s Real-Time Protection is proactive, has a nearly instantaneous response to threats, and it can scan in the background with a relatively small impact on system performance. The free version is a must for any home user, and the Pro version offers enhanced protection during Internet browsing, online purchases and banking transactions.

Pros :

  • The free version is far better than many paid alternatives, and it includes browser safety and system speed-up functions. The Avira Antivirus Pro version is affordable, at $44.99/year.
  • The software is lightweight both in terms of disk space required for installation, and demand on system resources while operating. Programmed scans may start automatically with minimal effect on computer performance. Even during a deep system scan, the impact on performance is much lower compared with other antivirus solutions.
  • Avira is extremely proactive and detects threats in an instant, applying quarantine measures or deleting the compromised files.
  • Modular design – Software add-ons can be installed or configured through a convenient web dashboard, and specific add-ons exist for each web browser. Avira is very customizable according to user preferences.

Cons :

  • Sometimes Avira may have issues with USB devices, incorrectly identifying their auto-run software as malware. However, this can be easily avoided by temporarily disabling Real-Time Protection when files must be saved or copied from a USB device.
  • The dashboard is sometimes slow to open, but without affecting system performance.

When I started my own business just under a year ago, I purchased a new Windows 10 laptop and a MacBook Pro. I opted out of any security for the Mac, but I knew I wanted to have some type of antivirus or internet security package for my PC. I had been using AVG on my personal computer for a long time but always felt like there had to be a better solution that allowed for a faster boot up or that used fewer system resources. AVG wasn't terrible, but it just left me suspicious that there was better. Well, new computers were the trigger for me to spend a little time researching the top security software brands and decide which was the best fit to protect my new business computer. I have always known Symantec products as system resource hogs despite the real or perceived benefit of their top-notch security and regular definition updates. I wanted something much lighter and my reading led me to Avast as the top competitor with AVG. I was new to Avast so I tried the free version to explore its interface and get a feel for its efficiency. I was impressed with what I saw and I decided this was the way to go for me. I use Avast on my work computer and have since converted my personal computer as well.

Pros :

  • I feel that the security Avast is sufficient. I have read no reports of it being any less susceptible to security threats than any other major player in the antivirus or internet security space.
  • I love that it runs considerably light weight and that all updates run automatically so I am not forced to do this manually or be prompted with updates.
  • Avast also scans for outdated software which is another neat way to keep everything current especially when some software updates are to address security flaws.

Cons :

  • I have yet to really see any negatives with Avast. I'm sure some day if some kind of virus sneaked its way through, I would grow suspicious but how am I to know that the same would not have happened with AVG or the likes.
  • Security software is one of those few scenarios where it is performing its best when you don't even realize it's there.

Because I’m an advanced IT geek, I am not used to have an antivirus on my personal computers, but with all the phishing and crap we download these days, it’s a must. Virus are more and more sophisticated, and maybe the operation system is more secure than it used to be, you are still in danger. You don’t want your computer to be infected by a ransomware for example and lose all your data. You need to find an antivirus that fits your needs. Avira is overall a great antivirus, but nothing else than a signature scanner. There is some strange choice like why do I need to be an administrator to start a scan? Why do you have a Firewall section when you don’t have a firewall? I tested both Antivirus Pro and Internet Security Suite. You know what? The different is that the security suite comes with “PC Speed Optimization”. How does it make a “Security Suite” adding “speeds”? Really not sure. Did I say that the website is very slow? There are many different preset scans that you can run. Standard recommendation of the industry is running a full scan once a week, and a Quick scan once a day. Why? Because full scan are to resource intensive, and with the new virus signature coming every day, you may have missed the virus from the real-time, so you want at least scan the most important files every day. A quick scan on my computer took 41 seconds. Excellent. My appreciation stops here. First, I expect from a security suite to help secure my computer. The firewall is just a configuration for the Windows Firewall, so, basically, they don’t have a firewall. There is a web filtering… but not sure how good it can be since there is no firewall, basic of Security Suite. There is also a Spam filter, that scan POP 110 and IMAP 143, both not SSL. I don’t see any integration in my Outlook, so if you are using Gmail, it won’t be scanned.

    Pros :

    • I like the color Red.
    • The Quick scan is really Quick.

    Cons :

    • Security Suite is “Desktop speed optimization”.
    • Very expensive for almost no features.

Avira Antivirus Pro is a better antivirus for PC product than half of the competitors in our product review. It’s just that, for Americans, it would be necessary to telephone long-distance to Europe if you had a situation that couldn’t be resolved via email. And in a market where most competitors provide online chat access to technical support, Avira does not. Finally, while quite a few of Avira’s competitors cover more than one PC with a single license, an Avira license protects just one PC.

Avast Pro Antivirus falls towards the end of our rankings this year. It's a solid, basic antivirus with some good features, but noticeable problems. Overall, Avast Pro Antivirus 2015 is a decent antivirus software with good extra features. However, there are far better options for a well-rounded security suite.
