  • Avira Antivirus 2016 scores high with the labs and our URL-blocking test, but not in our malware-blocking and antiphishing tests. And its browser safety functions snub Internet Explorer.

    Pros :

    Cons :

  • Avira Antivirus Pro offers nearly perfect protection from online threats, installed in record time and has a curated sales outlet for tested Windows software. But some of its functions are hidden in its compact interface, and the program scans slowly.

    Pros :

    Cons :

  • Avira Antivirus Pro provides very good performance ratings when it comes to malware detection ratio, overall scan speed and resources consumption, gaining a top position in the antivirus software community. Its extra levels of safety are powerful additions, and they should satisfy the preferences of most users.

I have used Avira for several years, mainly on my clients for personal use, in my opinion, this is absolutely the most popular free antivirus software. Depending on what you need, there are versions for Windows, Mac and Android.

    Pros :

    • Its strong point is (besides the fact that you have a good free version) the great recognition engine highly effective on malware.
    • You can download it directly from Avira.com site, to do this no registration is required.
    • The 1st thing to do is of course the updating of the definitions in order to be protected as well as possible, and to follow a full scan of your computer (do not recommend to make a quick scan the first time since it assumes you're installing an anti-virus on a PCs that had not previously installed). Obviously, the full scan is very long (especially on PC with important storage) but is far more effective.
    • The free version includes most of the functionality needed even if the paid version more frequently updates the definitions and also includes the features: Web Protection and Mail Protection.
    • I have not delved into the Mac version but I took a look at the Android version, the app is also free it's like any other antivirus checks your smartphone or tablet from any infected files and especially by malware.
    • You can also make and detect your device remotely in case you lost it.
Another nice feature (although expected a default by several phones now) is to create blacklists to block calls and messages from senders that you have put in Blacklist.

    Cons :

    • The user interface can be not very user-friendly for a novice user, it is very "Windows style". This may prove difficult for some but more manageable for experienced users because the majority of the functions are centralized (like an "only one" view) instead of being scattered in different tabs, at the left of this window you can select every functionality do you need.

Because I’m an advanced IT geek, I am not used to have an antivirus on my personal computers, but with all the phishing and crap we download these days, it’s a must. Virus are more and more sophisticated, and maybe the operation system is more secure than it used to be, you are still in danger. You don’t want your computer to be infected by a ransomware for example and lose all your data. You need to find an antivirus that fits your needs. Avira is overall a great antivirus, but nothing else than a signature scanner. There is some strange choice like why do I need to be an administrator to start a scan? Why do you have a Firewall section when you don’t have a firewall? I tested both Antivirus Pro and Internet Security Suite. You know what? The different is that the security suite comes with “PC Speed Optimization”. How does it make a “Security Suite” adding “speeds”? Really not sure. Did I say that the website is very slow? There are many different preset scans that you can run. Standard recommendation of the industry is running a full scan once a week, and a Quick scan once a day. Why? Because full scan are to resource intensive, and with the new virus signature coming every day, you may have missed the virus from the real-time, so you want at least scan the most important files every day. A quick scan on my computer took 41 seconds. Excellent. My appreciation stops here. First, I expect from a security suite to help secure my computer. The firewall is just a configuration for the Windows Firewall, so, basically, they don’t have a firewall. There is a web filtering… but not sure how good it can be since there is no firewall, basic of Security Suite. There is also a Spam filter, that scan POP 110 and IMAP 143, both not SSL. I don’t see any integration in my Outlook, so if you are using Gmail, it won’t be scanned.

    Pros :

    • I like the color Red.
    • The Quick scan is really Quick.

    Cons :

    • Security Suite is “Desktop speed optimization”.
    • Very expensive for almost no features.

Avira is hands-down one of the best antivirus software solutions available – even the free version is far better than many paid solutions. In my personal experience, I have seen a large amount of users with considerable system performance issues caused by viruses and malware that their antivirus software has been unable to detect. They have experienced a drastic improvement in performance as soon as they upgraded to the free version of Avira. The great customer value of Avira is due to the fact that it offers excellent protection while being lightweight: the effect on system resources is minimal. Avira’s Real-Time Protection is proactive, has a nearly instantaneous response to threats, and it can scan in the background with a relatively small impact on system performance. The free version is a must for any home user, and the Pro version offers enhanced protection during Internet browsing, online purchases and banking transactions.

    Pros :

    • The free version is far better than many paid alternatives, and it includes browser safety and system speed-up functions. The Avira Antivirus Pro version is affordable, at $44.99/year.
    • The software is lightweight both in terms of disk space required for installation, and demand on system resources while operating. Programmed scans may start automatically with minimal effect on computer performance. Even during a deep system scan, the impact on performance is much lower compared with other antivirus solutions.
    • Avira is extremely proactive and detects threats in an instant, applying quarantine measures or deleting the compromised files.
    • Modular design – Software add-ons can be installed or configured through a convenient web dashboard, and specific add-ons exist for each web browser. Avira is very customizable according to user preferences.

    Cons :

    • Sometimes Avira may have issues with USB devices, incorrectly identifying their auto-run software as malware. However, this can be easily avoided by temporarily disabling Real-Time Protection when files must be saved or copied from a USB device.
    • The dashboard is sometimes slow to open, but without affecting system performance.
