Citrix XenApp is useful where there isn't a VPN available. I used it for some years, and I think that is really powerful. You can add (it depends on your grants) a lot of applications. I used it with Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Reporting services, but also with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft software.

Citrix Xen App is cool because you can work with a certain application but using the power of a server. An example: we developed an Excel add-in to load millions of data inside a Microsoft Excel pivot, to make business analysis, and stuff like that. On a standard personal computer (let's say, for example, 4 GB RAM, and so on) this spreadsheet was too heavy to load, but using Citrix XenApp desktop, we managed to let users work on a server (16 GB of RAM, and many more). With that configuration, clients PC using Citrix XenApp were able to do faster analysis with million rows of data.

Moreover, I've used XenApp a lot of times to work on SQL server without a VPN configured on my PC. Just log in my XenApp account, then open the SQL server app on XenApp and work.

    Pros :

    • It's cool because you can use it on your PC, ios, mobile, android and so on.
    • Multi-platform. It's also quite simple to add applications and share them with your users.
    • It's scalable and powerful, but it can require good hardware to work on.

    Cons :

    • Citrix XenApp is really slow to work with; every time.
    • You can observe a lot of lagging between you mouse and keyboard action and the software reaction.
    • Let's say that for me Citrix XenApp isn't probably the best way to use software on the cloud, but when you can't have VPN or other, it's ok.
    • Setup's a little bit complex.
