H&R Block Review by Cloudswave

No one likes the idea of doing taxes, but it is a necessary evil. Fortunately, the Internet has helped to make things a bit easier, as it is now possible to do your taxes and file online. A number of different companies have taken to the web with their tax software, but few have the same amount of trust and name recognition that H&R Block brings to the table.

The company is one of the most recognized brands in the country, with nationwide commercials and offices nearly everywhere. For decades, they have been a trusted solution for those who needed to do their taxes. They then moved into boxed software, which people could buy and use to do their own taxes. Over the past few years, they've expended a lot of effort developing easy to use online software.

Those who want to have a solid and reliable software system to help them do their taxes will find H&R Block at Home offers just what they need when it comes to options and budgetary constraints. As long as someone is able to use simple software and has a basic understanding of doing their taxes, it tends to be an easy to use system.

What Are the Options?

H&R Block has a number of different options and tiers available for those who want to use their software. Since the pricing of the software can change, we will not be getting into the specifics of the price for each of the tiers (other than the free option). We will, however, be reviewing what each of the different tiers has to offer in terms of features.

The Free Version

First up is the Free version, which is a good solution for those who have simple tax solution needs. This version will work well even for those who need something that's very simple to use, but keep in mind that it does not have all of the same bells and whistles of the higher tiers.

With the Free version, you will be able to itemize your deductions if needed. You will also have support for Schedule B for those who have more than $1,500 in interest income or ordinary dividends. You are able to import your W-2s and record information from them. This is very helpful for those who have more than one job. In addition, the software has support for the Affordable Care Act Requirements.

You will enter your health insurance coverage for the previous year. One of the other advantages is that they will provide you with a 5% refund bonus if the federal refund is at least $100, as long as you accept the return (all or part of it) as a gift card from retailers they're associated with, such as Best Buy.

Keep in mind that filing for your federal taxes is free with this option, but there is a fee charged for filing the state return.

The Basic Version

The Basic plan has a number of similarities to the Free version. It does offer access to returns from prior years and it has more robust importing features available. With this plan, it is free to file federal and state taxes. If you are filing through a mobile device though, there is an associated fee. The Basic plan has all of the same features as the Free tier, but it has a number of additional features that could be beneficial.

It offers support for Schedule EIC for those who qualify for Earned Income Credit. Users are able to access their past tax returns for the past six years, so long as they filed them with H&R Block. They can import the return from the past year, and they have a mobile version for both Android and iOS.

The Deluxe Version

For those filers who have more complex tax returns, the Deluxe edition could be a good option. This features the same benefits of the Basic and Free versions. However, it also offers support for those with charitable donations (cash and non-cash) that were greater than $500 during the tax year. If provides Schedule D support for those who have had capital gains or losses when selling property, securities, and other types of assets. Rather than a 5% refund bonus, this comes with a 10% refund bonus. Again, it's under the same terms as the other bonuses.

The Premium Version

The Premium version is typically the best option for those who own their own business, as well as landlords and others who have complex taxes they need to handle each year. The Premium plan has all of the same benefits and features as the other programs, along with some added support. This includes support for Schedule C, which is helpful for those who are self-employed.

The software makes it easy to file properly and to make sure that you haven't missed anything. It has support for Schedule E as well. This is essential for those who earn income from rental real estate, trusts, estates, corporations, and other bodies.

What Other Features and Benefits Does This Offer?

Some of the other features and benefits of the software include free live, phone, and chat support. This can be very helpful for users who have questions about the system. The support is available to all users of the software, even those who have the free version.

Another benefit is the fact that you do not have to create an account when you are doing your taxes. You only have to do this at the end. This gives you the chance to see what your refund will be. It is essentially a "try before you buy" piece of software.

  • Whether someone is filing a very simple set of tax returns or relatively complicated ones, this software is likely to provide the tools needed. Though there are no user forums to help get in-depth answers to some questions, the embedded links tend to provide complete solutions to most common questions.

  • Given its superior customer support options and access to unrivaled information and protection, we strongly recommend H&R Block for all consumers. In particular, those that have more complex deductions or intricate questions regarding its taxes will benefit from H&R Block's industry-leading tax preparation and filing support.

  • If you are looking for a tax filing service from a big name software that offers professional consultation services as well as retail filing locations then H&R Block may be the right choice for you. This is an easy to use program that offers simple guidance through the tax filing process and excellent customer support. The only downside we could find is in its mobility — it doesn’t allow users to bookmark or go back to past sections once they’ve moved on in the process.

FAQs for H&R Block

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions that people have when it comes to using H&R Block's online tax software.

Question: Is There a Plan for My Tax Situation?

H&R Block knows that everyone's tax situation is different, so you will be able to choose from four different tiers - Free, Basic, Deluxe, and Premium. There is a tier available for everyone whether they are filing their taxes from their first part time job or they are retired and have multiple rental properties.

Question: What If I'm Audited?

The fear of an audit is very real for many people. If you find out that you are being formally audited by the IRS, the company will make sure their tax professionals are there to help you. This is true no matter what program you select, including the free version.

Question: Can You Pay With Your Refund?

If you don't have money for the best tax management software right now, don’t worry. You can always use your refund to pay for preparing and filing the return.

Should You Use H&R Block at Home?

If you have income and file taxes, why not take out the frustration of trying to do it all on your own? The system really does make it much easier to do your taxes in a fraction of the time and with the different tiers and versions available, there's no excuse not to try it, as long as you have at least a basic understanding of your taxes. You will have to answer a number of questions on the system, and it is important that you answer these properly and correctly so you do not run the risk of an audit or an incorrect return.

While there are many different programs out there that allow you to do your taxes and file them online, few have the pedigree of H&R Block. It is a good overall system that is easy to use and has a very intuitive interface. However, make sure that the tier you choose is actually the best option for your tax situation. Some of the lower-tier plans will not be able to provide you with the full tax features and options you need.
