Chargify is an excellent tool for managing subscriptions and other payment models, for any service or products which the user may offer. There are a huge amount of reasons as to why Chargify can be a great choice. First of all, Chargify supports subscription models based on free trials, which automatically presents itself as a selling point when compared to other software which is not built to handle free trials. Some payment gateways are supported, including PayPal and Swipe, which makes things much easier and more flexible for customers. Coupon codes and gift vouchers are supported, similar to many other products, which is always a welcome addition, as most eCommerce businesses require this. Furthermore, besides payment models based on monthly subscriptions, customers can also be billed based on their consumption of a service or a product, through some handy features present in Chargify. Another reason for using Chargify is that there are multiple insights, statistics and analytics for users’ subscription habits, which is useful for figuring out why a user might have cancelled or renewed a subscription. Taxes are also handled very well in Chargify, with a detailed set of options which are all configurable so as to abide with a multitude of legislations which can vary between countries and regions. Similar to other products, invoices can be generated and sent to clients automatically, once the criteria for a subscription payment has been met. This can, therefore, save companies a lot of time, and can also significantly reduce the workload of their accounting departments. In terms of costs, Chargify can be quite expensive for a large amount of customers and transactions, although the fact that it is based on a fixed monthly fee, rather than revenue-based percentage model, means that some companies can also save money like this, if they do not have a large customer base. Of course, Chargify has a powerful API, which can be integrated with other software applications, however, it must be noted that it is quite poorly documented.

Pros :

  • Supports many different payment gateways. • Fixed monthly fee, which means that Chargify does not use a revenue-based payment model (based on the amount of customers billed).
  • Chargify supports trial period-based subscriptions.
  • Chargify supports coupons.
  • Many options available to interact with ongoing and expired subscriptions.
  • Detailed statistics.
  • Chargify can be used to bill users based on their consumption of a service, besides time-based models.
  • Automatic invoice generation and billing is supported.
  • PayPal integration.
  • In-depth taxation options.
  • Sandbox environment is available for testing.
  • Detailed reporting available.
  • Chargify can be integrated into any web-based service through a very flexible API.

Cons :

  • For a large amount of customers, Chargify can be very expensive.
  • API is not well documented.

Right from charging the user’s credit card to providing business intelligence, Chargify is an end to end solution to your company’s recurring billing needs. To their credit, Chargify has a very reasonable pricing structure for a full featured app. Chargify could help the freemium Web 2.0 companies in a big way with its flexible free user handling plans. If you are looking for a service that can handle the painful and complex task of payment processing in its entirety, you don’t have to look beyond Chargify.

What do you like best?I like the way it lets me schedule my invoices, so those could be sent later. Also it tells me when an invoices has been viewed at the other end. Really helpful - it's almost like keeping a regular check on your invoices. What do you dislike?Nothing, but sometimes I wish they worked 24/7, just so I could get instant support at any time.

Although Invoicera does have promise with the amount of tools and functions that are available, there are much easier apps to use. The interface can be confusing at times and trying to assign projects and tasks to specific clients could be designed better. Unless you plan on spending a great deal of time learning the application, it may be too difficult for average users. With a bit of fine tuning of functionality and easier to manage tools, this could be a great app.
