Chargify is an excellent tool for managing subscriptions and other payment models, for any service or products which the user may offer. There are a huge amount of reasons as to why Chargify can be a great choice. First of all, Chargify supports subscription models based on free trials, which automatically presents itself as a selling point when compared to other software which is not built to handle free trials. Some payment gateways are supported, including PayPal and Swipe, which makes things much easier and more flexible for customers. Coupon codes and gift vouchers are supported, similar to many other products, which is always a welcome addition, as most eCommerce businesses require this. Furthermore, besides payment models based on monthly subscriptions, customers can also be billed based on their consumption of a service or a product, through some handy features present in Chargify. Another reason for using Chargify is that there are multiple insights, statistics and analytics for users’ subscription habits, which is useful for figuring out why a user might have cancelled or renewed a subscription. Taxes are also handled very well in Chargify, with a detailed set of options which are all configurable so as to abide with a multitude of legislations which can vary between countries and regions. Similar to other products, invoices can be generated and sent to clients automatically, once the criteria for a subscription payment has been met. This can, therefore, save companies a lot of time, and can also significantly reduce the workload of their accounting departments. In terms of costs, Chargify can be quite expensive for a large amount of customers and transactions, although the fact that it is based on a fixed monthly fee, rather than revenue-based percentage model, means that some companies can also save money like this, if they do not have a large customer base. Of course, Chargify has a powerful API, which can be integrated with other software applications, however, it must be noted that it is quite poorly documented.

Pros :

  • Supports many different payment gateways. • Fixed monthly fee, which means that Chargify does not use a revenue-based payment model (based on the amount of customers billed).
  • Chargify supports trial period-based subscriptions.
  • Chargify supports coupons.
  • Many options available to interact with ongoing and expired subscriptions.
  • Detailed statistics.
  • Chargify can be used to bill users based on their consumption of a service, besides time-based models.
  • Automatic invoice generation and billing is supported.
  • PayPal integration.
  • In-depth taxation options.
  • Sandbox environment is available for testing.
  • Detailed reporting available.
  • Chargify can be integrated into any web-based service through a very flexible API.

Cons :

  • For a large amount of customers, Chargify can be very expensive.
  • API is not well documented.

I've been using Freshbooks for three years now since I started my own business. My CFO and mentor in my previous role had schooled me on the financial aspects of operating a cost center. In addition, I had previously used invoicing software, produced quotes, managed a team’s timesheets and analyzed profitability of services among other tasks, so I already had a good understanding of what I needed from a financial software package. My hope was that I could find a software package which would integrate many of these tasks and save me time as a solopreneur starting out with a huge to-do list ahead of me. Freshbooks covered everything I needed and more. The user interface is pretty clean and very easy to use. When I was just starting out the fact that it was free for up to three clients was very appealing too. I would heartily recommend it to other small business.

Pros :

  • Payments: Freshbooks integrates with PayPal, which I find convenient. Since I work for clients in the US and the UK, I can easily produce estimates and invoices in both currencies. This is a huge benefit for me. Professionalism: I can produce professional-looking estimates and invoices branded with my company logo.
  • Time-tracking: The time tracking tool is useful when I’m working on client projects. I also enjoy the fact that I can enter an estimated number of hours for each project and quickly look at their dashboard to see if my time is running close my estimate.
  • Reporting: At the end of financial year, I can export reports of invoices and expenses in Excel for my accountant to prepare tax returns. Efficiency: Freshbooks probably saves me hours of work each month, and I love how it makes me so effective and efficient.

Cons :

  • It's pretty hard to think of any cons with Freshbooks. I am very forgiving of deficiencies in software if it’s outstanding. I’m the queen of the workaround so if the software doesn’t do something I find another way. I honestly can’t remember in the last three years if Freshbooks has failed to deliver on one of my financial accounting requirements.

    I'm not a big fan of FreshBooks. When we used the system to track our time I found myself avoiding to use the system as often as I could because it had a few glaring errors that kept me from wanting to use it. We have switched over to using 10,000ft, and I much prefer the platform for many reasons, the chief one being that a project manager has to add you to a client before you can track time for it. As a designer, I work on many quick projects for a variety of clients throughout the day. Sometimes I'm working for 10 different clients in a day- that means every time we get a new client ( which happens daily ) I have to bother my project manager to add the client for me in FreshBooks.So imagine: it's the end of the day, and you are tracking your hours. There are 3, 30-minute projects you worked on for new clients but your project manager left on time, and you are staying late because that's what designers do. Thus, you have to wait until the next day to log time for these small projects being that you don't forget them during the time being. All of those small, forgotten projects are wasted revenue that adds up over time. Also, it's easy to log zero time for projects by accident, or accidentally log time for the wrong day.andnbsp;

    Pros :

    • It logs your hours and adds everything up very nicely.

    Cons :

    • It doesn't suggest projects you may have worked on during the week.
    • It doesn't allow you to add new clients, you have to bother a project manager to add them for you.
    • It takes to many clicks to add time for something: 10,000 feet it only takes one
    • The UI is uninspired and lazy causing the experience of using the product to be painful.

Right from charging the user’s credit card to providing business intelligence, Chargify is an end to end solution to your company’s recurring billing needs. To their credit, Chargify has a very reasonable pricing structure for a full featured app. Chargify could help the freemium Web 2.0 companies in a big way with its flexible free user handling plans. If you are looking for a service that can handle the painful and complex task of payment processing in its entirety, you don’t have to look beyond Chargify.

Summing up, I think that FreshBooks would be an asset to any business. There just seems to be too much here to simply dismiss. It seems like they’ve done their homework in finding out exactly what their clients need, and they deliver. I’d fully take advantage of their free trial offer, but when the time comes, I can definitely seeing myself signing up for their services.

aymo is the app I’ll be using to run my business starting next week. After searching for an app with a feature wishlist that is pretty much summarized by Paymo’s actual feature list, and an implementation that doesn’t make me hate time-tracking, I’m sold.

As a freelance bookkeeper, I hate Freshbooks with a passion. My client uses it, and he loves if for invoicing, but it's really not good for anything else, and without even a basic reconciliation feature, it's an absolute nightmare to try and figure out if any of the information is correct on the limited reports it allows. Even a report listing just the entries for reconciliation would be a vast improvement. Also, there is no way to reverse entries other than just deleting them, which is absolutely ridiculous. Overall, I will probably turn down clients rather than work with this software again, unless there are major changes. It needs VAST improvement. It doesn't even integrate with common accounting software.
