User Industry: Architecture (creating simple but pretty enough 3D models of buildings and interiors). SketchUP is very easy to use, it is highly intuitive, and it is the simplest app out there to quickly mock up 3D models and designs without extensive training or experience. Models are easy to merge, easy to edit.

Shortcuts that are available are very useful, to be honest, you will need to know around 10 shortcuts, and this really speed up work process. I like the fact that SketchUP can only produce cartoony models, rendering is not an option, and that's it. They don't bother to compete with more complex programs, and everything is so simple to use. If you want some advanced rendering I recommend using Kerkythea, it is free to use, easy to use (you can learn essentials in two or three of days) and you can produce really pretty rendering.

Sometimes clients have a hard time to understand space in 2D drawing, that's where SketchUP saves the deal, you can literally build a simple and rough model in a matter of minutes to help the client understand space better. A piece of advice: Sit down and start playing with it. The more you do with it, the easier it is to use. SketchUP is very forgiving so don't be afraid that you will mess something up, I think it has infinite Undo :) Use the free version of SketchUP until you understand the advantages and disadvantages of the program.

    Pros :

    • Easy to learn, highly intuitive (really I sometimes think it is doing my job alone).
    • Just insert "3dwarehouse" in Google search, click on the first link and enjoy in a massive database of free models :)
    • Great correspondence with AutoCAD.
    • The ease with what you can make 3d models and edit is the best part of SketchUP. It's like Lego bricks :)
    • Free version really has enough features for getting the job done.
    • Materials are easy to implement.

    Cons :

    • Freezes in two or three seconds when performing Autosave, sometimes this can be annoying (I adjusted it for 30 mins).
    • Save often! Sometimes it crashes without warning and without possibility to save model, thank you for the annoying Autosave option :)
    • Some useful software that make composite shape editing easier (e.g. combining shapes, slicing pieces) are only available in the PRO version (which is quite pricey).
    • Low precision measurement tool.
    • As SketchUP models get larger the program tends to slow down significantly.

SketchUp is an application of computer graphics used in architecture, urban planning and engineering, but it is also used for the development of video games and similar professions. You can choose to download the free version, with a freeware license for personal and domestic use, or the paid version of SketchUp Pro.

I have always used SketchUp mostly for fast and simple jobs. In fact, due to its simplicity, this program is also used by those who have never had to deal with modeling programs. With its many templates, you can design tridimensional models with incredible ease, and you can also apply all the materials you prefer. All this in a few minutes! You're really able to save much time with this software, both for basic, but also for more complex projects.

One thing that I really appreciate about this software, is that you can simulate the realistic impact of solar shadows on the model, at a given time and season of the year.

If you are a fresh user, and you want to learn something about 3D graphics, you definitely have to take SketchUp, I think it's the best for beginners.

    Pros :

    • Extreme ease of use, instead of similar programs for design.
    • You can download so many templates and models from sites of interest.
    • You can download the free version and use it for personal purposes, but not for commercial purposes.
    • If you prefer, you can download also the paid version of SketchUp Pro.
    • In free downloads, you can find also included, as well as indoor and outdoor environments, even elements of everyday life, such as plants, machinery, animals, people, furniture, etc.
    • You can retrieve information about the product on SketchUcation, where you also have the possibility of access to courses, or texts on the subject.
    • You can both import and to export, a lot of formats: 3DS, DWG, DXF, FBX, OBJ, VRML, PDF, EPS, JPEG, TIFF and PNG.

    Cons :

    • I have never had complaints so far.

SketchUp, as the name implies, is an excellent sketch and conceptualisation tool, to make quick and easily understandable drawings and an interesting solution to enter the world of 3D design. Its simplicity and straightforward interface make it intuitive enough for both beginners and advanced users, it is also a great 3d engineering and architectural cad and not just a low-level 3D modeling, sketching precisely.

Powerful and easy to learn it combines a range of simple but effective tools with an intelligent drawing system that accelerates and simplifies the three-dimensional design process. Personally, I use it to quick sketch 3d models for interiors visualization.

    Pros :

    • I find that SketchUp is very intuitive and easy to learn.
    • The modeling tools are very intuitive and smart and the most of the times to create a complex 3D shape, having the knowledge of the available tools, of course, is only a matter of minutes.
    • With the "3d warehouse" tool you can import thousands of free 3d models divided into categories that could be downloaded and imported directly into the scene in which we are working.
    • It 'also possible to increase this archive sharing your own 3d models.
    • Another impressive aspect is that there are several high-quality rendering engines available for SketchUp, many of them available for free.

    Cons :

    • Being a 3d sketching software obviously has its limits as regards the management of complex 3D models; if you work with 3D objects consisting of many polygons and transparent objects it becomes slow and frustrating.
    • Also to create 3D models suitable for printing a certain expertise is needed.
    • Even the STL format import and export process is managed by a plug-in developed in open source and this has caused some problems in the past.
    • Unfortunately for commercial use, you must purchase the Pro version and its price is not affordable for everyone.

I have used SketchUp, and I like using it, it's quite fine. SketchUp is a smooth and efficient free program that provides a lot of functionalities to facilitate all kinds of designing. It has special navigation features, which includes, look around, pan, zoom, gestures for orbit, and zoom extents. While drawing shapes, the option of dimensions is also provided so we could make a perfectly measured shape. There's a huge variety of templates available. Options include construction documentation, Landscape Architecture, Interior and Production Design, 3D Printing, and more. Help support is provided 24/7. Overall, nice experience with this software.

    Pros :

    • Thousands of models in the 3D.
    • Warehouse and an extremely intuitive layout are the key features that make SketchUp Pro easier to use than many other CAD programs.
    • Variety of options for support and templates.

    Cons :

    • SketchUp Pro requires many architectural tools like a house wizard and wall tool.
    • It needs some more work done with the navigations features.
    • It is not free as said.

At first I did not want to call this program a CAD software; however, it is very simply made it pretty much is. With the customizable toolbars and icons for almost any tool and use, SketchUp is a 3D design tool like none other before it. With many different templates, anyone can build a 3D model for any need. From woodworking to metalworking to a house to some fantasy robot, it can be done. I would argue however, it is best used for architectural design. However, despite this easy design there is so much in SketchUp, it can be overwhelming and takes a good amount of time to get a hang of.

    Pros :

SketchUp comes prepared with many different templates for all your needs. I was and am still almost overwhelmed with all the templates available. There is a template for pretty much any project, which saves precious time and tears when making 3D models and images. There are so many different ways to get help in SketchUp. No matter how experienced you are, there is a tutorial to help you with whatever concept you are trying to accomplish. This includes a Getting Started Guide, video tutorials, self-paced tutorials and more! I also find the simple and basic User Interface really easy and nice to look at. While it does not have a very fancy design or complex color scheme, it works for the program and I like that.

    Cons :

The biggest con and it really does bring down the score is the fact that the learning curve is pretty steep. There is just so much to learn and do in SketchUp, and if you have never used a 3D modeling program before, you will end up lost. Even with tutorials, it can be hours before getting results. Sadly, those results are just the tutorial ones too, for new users to create what they wanted to create can take a good amount of time. Time not everyone will want to spend learning how to use this program.

Although the SketchUp is designed for 3D modeling, there no nothing that would not be clear to the ordinary user. All three-dimensional models in this program are based on the simple two-dimensional shapes (e.g. lines, arcs, rectangle, etc.). Then, with the help of the Push/Pull tool, they become three-dimensional. Thus, in a matter of minutes you can, for example, create a model of the house and to add the furniture. The finished project can be saved as an image file, in the native SketchUp format or in Google Earth format. By the way, after the SketchUp developers have created a module for exporting to Google Earth, Google has noticed the program and bought it. The search giant then sold it, and for now SketchUp is developed by the Trimble Navigation company. SketchUp has the great 3D models library. There are buildings, bridges, cars, furniture, people, animals, fictional characters which are available for free. The users can search in the library just from the SketchUp window and add the new models to the repository. The main advantage of SketchUp is the ability of the program to suggest the most convenient next move and mode of action. It displays graphic, and text hints in the lower left corner. These real time hints help operate quickly and easily. SketchUp does not have a powerful renderer but works great in conjunction with popular render engines (V-ray, Artlantis and others). The own SketchUp render is very simple. There is one main light source — the sun. Shadows and lighting parameters can be adjusted. The models created in SketchUp, may be imported it in 3ds Max, Archicad etc.

    Pros :

    • Very easy to use compared to the other 3D software.
    • Hundreds of free models in the 3D Warehouse.

    Cons :

    •  It is not freeware anymore (since Google had sold it).
    • There is Sketchup Make free version, but it is feature limited and could not be used for commercial projects.
