Tortoise GIT is a simple yet powerful Git extension. It was built from Tortoise SVN but obviously to be used with GIT as opposed to SVN. It seems flawless with Windows due to the program being a shell script. This allows you to use git via explorer windows and integrate your GIT commands via right-clicking and without the use of a separate window or command line.

Tortoise GIT is also an open source software, which allows you to check out all of the source code, so you know what you are getting into. Overall, Tortoise GIt is a very good GIT application, and I recommend it to anyone.

    Pros :

    • Tortoise GIT is one hundred percent free. I found this to be really a huge benefit as saving money when working on projects is a huge deal, even more so if you are on a budget and would rather spend money on other areas of a project instead of using a GIT application.
    • Furthermore, it is open source, so the source code is free to look at and improve upon if you want to do such additions.
    • Tortoise GIT is a shell program which I thoroughly enjoy as it allows for not needing a separate window and allowing for the git commands to be used via Windows Explorer.
    • It is integrated seamlessly, and I couldn't ask for a better system to use via Windows Explorer.

    Cons :

    • Many that may come to Tortoise GIT from Tortoise SVN may be confused and dazed at first as this is true GIT as opposed to the original SVN application made by the creators of Tortoise.
    • With no graphic interface, all merges, checking for differences, and other git commands must be done via the Tortoise menu in Explorer.
    • While this isn't a huge issue, I found some difficulty with it and others may feel the same while using this program.

In the world of version/source control, Git is the most popular software to handle this. The main purpose of Git is to manage changes in code repositories (which can be local or hosted elsewhere, such as GitHub or Bitbucket), as well as manage the versioning of such changes in the code. Therefore, having a client such as TortoiseGit and a code repository is essential to a project's success, if multiple team members are to collaborate and contribute code simultaneously.

A number of Git clients are available; however TortoiseGit extends many useful features of TortoiseSVN, which users have grown to love. TortoiseGit is, therefore, a good Git client to use, if revision and version control are the main concerns within the respective project. The useful subversioning tools included within this Git client do not come at a cost - all the usual features that are common in most Git clients, are also present within TortoiseGit. The latter can commit, push, pull and fork code within the respective code repository, just like other Git clients. It can also hook up to most code repositories, including popular ones such as Bitbucket, GitHub, as well as local repositories.

Besides this, TortoiseGit has various useful features to manage version control and seamlessly rollback to different versions of a particular project, as well as organise the versions. Traditionally, several Git clients are rather limited in this aspect, and other tools usually need to be used for this purpose. One may, therefore, conclude that the main selling point of TortoiseGit is the fact that users can enjoy a balance between traditional Git-related features, as well as powerful tools to handle sub-versions of projects. The main problem behind TortoiseGit is that it is not straightforward to get started with, and has a bit of a learning curve.

    Pros :

    • -Specializes in version control.
    • Ability to fork projects.
    • Can manage code repositories as well as other Git clients.
    • Can connect to most repos.

    Cons :

    • Tough learning curve.
