    As far as web servers go it's hard to find another that delivers the performance, speed, and versatility Nginx brings to the table. The development of Nginx began to address the issue of allowing 10K concurrent connections to be active at the same time on a given service (c10k problem) and has had nothing but success and growth since. With many adopting it due to the scalability and simplicity it emphasis.

    Nginx is not just one trick “web server” either. Although it excels at serving content in all sorts of environments (especially static content), the bigger strengths of Nginx come from its ability to instead work in a number of different roles. The most common being as a reverse proxy for many of the application layer delivery protocols (HTTP, IMAP, SMTP, etc.) or alternatively as a load balancer to manage web traffic volume.

    These are the two most routine uses for Nginx, but the flexibility doesn't end there as a larger list of features you can make use of to integrate Nginx into your infrastructure exist. Some of which are: caching, SSL termination, media protocol streaming, page authentication, bandwidth throttling, URL rewriting, mail proxying, etc. After using Nginx in several small scale setups and seeing how it fits in and performs on higher multi-node systems, there’s not much.

    Personally, I can say to criticise the performance of the software. It’s renowned for a reason it would seem. Some remarks around the loss of efficiency and higher speeds when serving a very large proportion of dynamic content are not unheard of, but aren't any worse than other web servers. Plus many variables come into play with different setups/configurations.

    Regardless overall, Nginx is a great choice that lives up to the hype and deserves all the praise it frequently gets. It’s also open-source software too like most of its competitors so is free to adopt and use.

    • Multi-role software that works as a web server, reverse proxy, or load balancer.
    • Has extra feature subsets to work in more roles (see overall impressions).
    • Free to use as is open source software; licensed under a BSD style license.
    • Intuitive and easy scripting syntax when configuring.

    Cons :

    • At home on Linux OS and Linux architectures; works on other platforms but might encounter problems specific to those platforms.
    • Documentation is fine overall but some areas are reportedly missing or lacking (non-comprehensive).
