About CodeIgniter

CodeIgniter is an open source rapid development web application framework, for use in building dynamic web sites with PHP. "Its goal is to enable [developers] to develop projects much faster than writing code from scratch, by providing a rich set of libraries for commonly needed tasks, as well as a simple interface and logical structure to access these libraries." The first public version of CodeIgniter was released on February 28, 2006, and the latest stable version 2.1.3 was released October 8, 2012.

CodeIgniter is loosely based on the popular Model-View-Controller development pattern. While view and controller classes are a necessary part of development under CodeIgniter, models are optional.

CodeIgniter is most often noted for its speed when compared to other PHP frameworks. In a critical take on PHP frameworks in general, PHP creator Rasmus Lerdorf spoke at frOSCon in August 2008, noting that he liked CodeIgniter "because it is faster, lighter and the least like a framework."

CodeIgniter's source code is maintained at GitHub, and as of the preview version 3.0-dev, is certified open source software licensed with the Open Software License ("OSL") v. 3.0. Versions of CodeIgniter prior to 3.0 are licensed under a proprietary Apache/BSD-style open source license.

The decision to switch to an OSL license sparked some community controversy, especially about the GPL incompatibility of the new license, to which EllisLab has responded with a series of articles entitled Software License Awareness Week.

Is a Framework developed in PHP for creating any type of web application under PHP. It is an open source product, free use for any application. Like any framework, Codeigniter contains a number of libraries that are used for web application development and also proposes a way to develop we must follow to take advantage of the application.

It marks a specific way to encode web pages and rank their different scripts, which helps the code is organized and easier to create and maintain. CodeIgniter implements the development process called Model View Controller (MVC), which is a standard for application programming, used to make websites and traditional programs.

It contains many aids for creating advanced PHP applications that make the development process faster. In turn, defines an architecture development , which will allow us programming in a more orderly manner, and contains several tools that help make more versatile and secure applications.

CodeIgniter and other PHP frameworks can help to take the final leap as PHP developer, creating more professional and more reusable code web applications, with the difference that CodeIgniter is created to make it easy to install on any server and start using any other framework. In addition, many of its utilities and operating modes are optional, which makes you to enjoy greater freedom when developing websites.

    Pros :

    • CodeIgniter is able to work most environments or servers, including shared hosting systems, where only have access by FTP to send files to the server and where we have no access to their configuration.
    • You do not need more than an FTP account to upload CodeIgniter to the server, and its configuration is done with just editing a file, where we write things like access to the database. During setup, we will not need access to tools like the command line, which are often not available in all accommodation.
    • The core of CodeIgniter is fairly light, allowing to the server not being overloaded interpreting or executing large portions of code. Most modules or classes offered can be loaded optionally, only when they will be used.
    • CodeIgniter documentation is easy to follow and assimilate because it is written in tutorial mode. This does not provide much quick reference, when we already know about the framework and want to inquire about a function or method specifically, Undoubtedly, the highlight of CodeIgniter is its accessibility, since we can use in the widest range of environments.

    Cons :

    • It does not work with modules, so to separate the application into modules you need to use plugins, modification of the basic structure or be very orderly.
