I have been developing with C# and ASP.NET for the past 4 or 5 years approximately, and have always found it to be superior to other server-side technologies for the greater part. First of all, one of the greatest advantages of ASP.NET is that there is no confusion regarding frameworks, unlike PHP which has a huge amount of frameworks which can be used (such as Laravel, CakePHP, CodeIgniter, etc.). In the case of PHP, certain frameworks are best suited for different scenarios, so to take advantage of PHP, you would need to learn how to use a number of frameworks, which have their own unique learning curves and challenges. In the case of ASP.NET, the most popular and arguably best framework is ASP.NET MVC and can be used for virtually any type of project since this uses the MVC design pattern. Another advantage of ASP.NET is that the backend logic is all C# based, which means that it is relatively easy to move from Windows applications to services and web applications, using the same core technologies. This is also because ASP.NET takes advantage of the Microsoft.NET Framework, so has access to most of its features. In terms of disadvantages, one of the biggest ASP.NET disadvantage is hosting costs. ASP.NET web hosting is usually more expensive than PHP hosting, since a Windows license must be purchased when hosting, and therefore usually included in the hosting price. Furthermore, when working with MySQL databases, although ASP.NET can handle it, PHP has better MySQL support. ASP.NET is, therefore, more suited for database backends using Microsoft SQL Server. To summarize, ASP.NET is on par with other server-side technologies such as PHP, except in terms of cost. Being free and open source, PHP is far less costly to develop and host with than ASP.NET. This is arguably the biggest difference. Other than that, the ability to use Visual Studio when creating ASP.NET applications is a huge advantage which PHP does not share - in fact, most IDEs for PHP are sub par when compared with Visual Studio.

    Pros :

    • Visual Studio has native support for ASP.NET, which is a huge advantage since Visual Studio is arguably the best IDE available.
    • There is no confusion regarding frameworks, unlike PHP, which has a huge amount of frameworks which can be used. In the case of ASP.NET, the most popular framework is ASP.NET MVC, and this is suitable for virtually any sort of project.

    Cons :

    • ASP.NET web hosting is usually more expensive than PHP hosting, since a Windows license must be purchased when hosting, and therefore usually included in the hosting price.
    • When working with MySQL databases, although ASP.NET can handle it, PHP has better MySQL support. ASP.NET is, therefore, more suited for database backends using Microsoft SQL Server.
