Balsamiq is one of the most popular mockup tools, however not the only tool that can do mock ups. Alternative tools are Adobe Photoshop/Indesign, Powerpoint/Keynote/Google Slides, and a picture of pen on paper. The real advantage then is the built-in tools Balsamiq has available. The tools in the alternatives I mentioned are mostly boxes, circles and arrows = very limited. Balsamiq has web and application interface tools we're all familiar with and specialized to various niches too: checkboxes, select pop-ups, buttons, calendars, player controls, drop-downs, etc. That is its key differentiator in my opinion. Granted, I now leave the mock up work for websites to my designers, who create full color graphics with images, font types, logos and more in Photoshop, which is far superior and more impressive to clients than a blackandwhite mockup with no actual content filling it in.
Before knowing of the existence of this small but brilliant program, it built the preliminary wireframe of any graphic design that I had to run, on paper or by other professional programs, losing a lot of good time. Once I discovered it I could not do without, especially as regards the creation of wireframes for websites even if you use it for any kind of job that needs a preliminary wireframe. I think this software is crucial to have an idea of what that website you are working on will look like before opening your preferred development software and begin to build it.

What do you like best?It has all of the objects needed for software mockups pre-built. It's all drag and drop with enough options to be flexible but not too many that it's overbearing. Almost zero learning curve, anybody can jump on it and produce decent mockups. What do you dislike?Mostly geared toward mobileMore about Balsamiq

Tools like MockingBird are perfect for developers, who are filled with ideas but do not have graphic design skills to prepare pretty screenshots of them. Using MockingBird, you can quickly throw together a mockup of the screen that would help you in conveying your idea clearly, without wrestling with the complexities of design softwareMore about Mockingbird

This software has easy to use features and is flexible enough to handle projects of any magnitude. You do not need to go through huge sets of instructions in order to start using it. ProtoShare is an efficient option for crating prototypes. It helps you create visualization of products and test those prototypes. These prototypes can then be analyzed and the feasibility understood before actually starting with the product development.More about Protoshare
