Crazy Egg is a great heat map tool that allows you to get a visual representation of how users engage with your website, with several ways to see the data, from the ‘confetti’ click locations, to scroll maps that help you to understand the percentage of people who scroll down your website. It provides you with a clear picture of obstacles that your users may be facing and buttons/links that are not being clicked, allowing you to update your pages to make them more intuitive and function the way that your users expect them to function.

Pros :

There are plans that have been designed for everyone, from a small low-cost plan that provides enough data for somebody that has a small website with low traffic, to agencies that manage high traffic websites, tracking multiple pages across multiple domains. There are several ways to view your user engagement, each one of them has its own benefits, giving you clear visuals of user interaction. You can block IP addresses to ensure that you (or your company) don’t influence the results The interface is so easy to use, allowing you to quickly set up tracking and easily switch between your snapshots.

Cons :

If you show different content to returning users using cookies, Crazy Egg will not recognise this, which means that the original snapshot of your page will be shown despite user interaction with different content. After downloading reports for pages that use javascript to make navigation stick to the top of the page, I found that the snapshots were affected which made them unusable. You have to pay for a full year, so despite the monthly costs working out low, you need to be ready to pay for and commit to a full year.

When it comes to analysing the success of a website, and the amount of traffic it is receiving, two of the best tools for the job are Google Analytics and Adobe Analytics. Both of these tools are ultimately used for the same purpose, however, both have their unique advantages. In the case of Adobe Analytics, many of the features are similar to those present in Google Analytics, however, there are a few which stand out. Adobe Analytics allows users to create very detailed and customised search filters on the statistics, such as viewing the amount of customers who bought a product within a certain time range. These statistics can then be exported to many external tools for analysis and business intelligence, such as Excel. Within Adobe Analytics, reporting is, on the whole, more flexible than Google Analytics, however, it is generally easier to get started with generating reports in Google Analytics. One of the best selling points of Adobe Analytics is that data appears to be unsampled by default, whereas this is only available in the premium version of Google Analytics. Similar to Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics differentiates between traffic originating from mobile or desktop browsers. Besides this, there are loads of filters available for zooming in on data, including originating countries and regions, age groups, gender and many others. It is also possible to view detailed information about when, how and where the website traffic originates from. The biggest issue in Adobe Analytics is that a number of features which must be paid for in Adobe Analytics, are available for free within Google Analytics. Adobe Analytics is also definitely not cheap. On the whole, Adobe Analytics has a tougher learning curve than Google Analytics, and it can take a while to truly make use of the product to its full potential. Furthermore, Integration with Google advertising tools such as AdSense and AdWords is of course very limited, and finally, HotJar style heatmaps are not available.

Pros :

  • Detailed filters for viewing statistics.
  • Exporting of statistics to Excel. - Flexible reporting.
  • Unsampled data by default.
  • Ability to view information about traffic sources.

Cons :

  • Adobe Analytics is not free.
  • Reporting is easier and more user-friendly in Google Analytics.
  • Much stronger learning curve than Google Analytics.
  • No heatmaps.

I’ve tested a couple of other heatmap tracking tools and none of them has come near to what Crazy Egg has to offer. Ditch the eye tracking tools, and even In-Page analytics, and pick up Crazy Egg if you want to increase your website’s conversion rate. I highly recommend Crazy Egg. It’s very easy to use and fairly priced. It gives you what you want. No fluff!

I've been using Mouseflow for about a year. So far, it's been great and I've referred a lot of friends! We use it on two websites and always find new ways to improve. It's great for testing assumptions and gaining real-time customer feedback. They stand by their product (unlike Clicktale) -- good support, too.

What do you like best?Crazy Egg has the possibility to be such a powerful tool. It's very easy to add the javascript snippet and to export results. One thing I love is that Crazy Egg allows you to download snapshot results in a convenient zip folder, with different files laid out. Each snapshot also features the conditions (time frame, number of visitors and actions and site name) right there on the file, which is nice for providing context. What do you dislike? The interface is rough. ROUGH. Their menu options are hidden and often times you are left wondering "OK, now what do I do?" For example, if you reach your limit of screenshots, they bring you to a screen to delete screenshots but you can't do it one at a time, you need to select all before they will give you the option to delete. Also the "in snapshot" menu can be really confusing.Recommendations to others considering the productCrazy Egg can be rather unreliable when it comes to the data it provides, so only use its features as a back-up. It's a great tool for helping to validate certain ideas or testing opportunities, but as a tool it has it's faults - for example, sometimes it doesn't gather all clicks, or if some content doesn't come into focus right away (say via Parallax) then it won't show you really what customers are clicking on. Basically don't rely solely upon Crazy Egg.What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?I am helping to solve the problem of confused website visitors - making it easier to find roadblocks visitors face when they are looking to complete a conversion. I help clients make money by making the customer experience a better, more logical one. Removing clutter and sharpening site messaging. Besides the obvious financial benefits, I have achieved the added benefits of improved usability, site performance, cleaner design and consistent messaging during all steps in a site's sales funnel.
