I use it for my personal business and for clients I manage. Bang for the buck I can't complain at all. I can use the app on my phone when I am traveling for work or traveling for fun. Because it's easy to work with and a great price I consult start-up businesses on how to use it because it's so helpful.
Nowadays, any company should be at least tracking their brand mentions, and mention is the perfect tool. There are other tools out there that can help you to do this (for example Google Alerts), but mention has a great User interface that allows you to monitor mentions from all sites, from social media platform and forums, to blog posts and news articles.
There are different levels of access available with price plans from only $29 per month which allow you to track up to 3 alerts totalling 3k mentions by up to 3 users, to the enterprise plan which offers companies the ability to track up to 30 keywords for 500K mentions per month and 30 users, as well as other services such as support (an account manager) and data export features. There are 2 other plans in between, so there’s a plan for everyone. Setting up a new mention is very easy, and you can filter out your own social channels and websites to prevent being notified of your own mentions. It’s also very easy to respond to the mention (when necessary) straight from the online tool, as well as having the option to reply, retweet, quote, or favourite a tweet that you were mentioned in without ever having to leave mention. Another great use of mention is to track competitor mentions. This can help you to understand who is talking about your competitor, in which channels, and even help you to identify possible link opportunities. The notification system can be set up to desktop notifications, the settings of which can be tweaked, which shows a popup when you get a new mention. This is great, because it help you to be made aware of mentions quickly so that they can be dealt with. It’s also very important to react quickly to negative mentions, which makes this even more useful.
I have had problems with the access levels on more than one occasion, where despite having my access set to admin, I was unable to make changes to the settings, such as marking various mentions as irrelevant. This may simply be down to bad user experience with the tool.
HootSuite is a fine tool for people that simply want to find a better way to spend their social media time. Unfortunately, it doesn’t allow you to do much else, so for me, it raises the question as to why? There are a very few brands out there that can afford to simply stay active on social media and engage with their community and have success without doing much else marketing work. Typically, people that want to grow their businesses have to take a more multifaceted approach. Sure, have social media is great, but to what end do you make that effort? What is the best case scenario? Someone falls in love with your Facebook posts so much that they decide to buy your goods or pay for your services? Most likely, that isn’t how it will go. It is much more likely that they will Like your post and move on, leaving all your hard work to waste. By taking a more strategic approach and linking all of your marketing efforts to ensure that they all drive towards the same goal, you will see an increase in overall production. Sure, getting people to Like your posts is good, but that doesn’t make a sell. What you need to be really focused on is driving value for your business, and the way you can do that is by leveraging and creating valuable content. Use your social networks to share this content, but have the content live on your website itself, that way people have to come to your website to view it. This enables them to be exposed to more of your material while also giving you the opportunity to gate some of the more valuable things. For instance, you can talk lightly about a topic in a blog article. This can be freely accessible to anyone. Then you can elaborate on that topic for a downloadable offer like a white paper or an eBook. That way you will gain their contact information and be able to market to them moving forward.
