  • Chatter carefully - It's headline news or it's white noise

Chatter Use Cases and Deployment ScopeChatter is used across our organization and addresses the problem of gaps in communication. It provides the opportunity to communicate between departments and across country wide office locations via a social media-like status feed.

Pros : Chatter gives instant insight into company news. When deals are made or our company is in the media, Chatter provides a way to highlight important news to everyone in the organization.Chatter allows for open broadcasting similar to Twitter. This encourages positive communication and tagging individuals who are excelling at their job, bringing more energy and excellence to the organization as a whole.Daily emails give you the highlights of the day in case you missed anything.

Cons : Engagement process. An auto tutorial would be good for beginners.A better filter for status updates from most relevant to least relevant depending on department. Or at least a way to highlight same-department updates, many of the posts are irrelevant to my specific job, but I don't want to miss the ones that are relevant. The status updates can become tiresome to wade through to get to the information you know is essential not to miss.

Improve Team Collaboration & Morale with Chatter

Chatter Use Cases and Deployment ScopeChatter was used by our entire organization to increase collaboration and productivity.  As an international agency servicing a wide range of clients, we needed a tool that would allow our employees to share best practices, successes or tools that would help each other. Chatter enabled that to happen and the visibility of projects increased dramatically, as well as allowed our workforce to "e-meet" each other and collaborate even though projects and clients would not usually facilitate working together.

Pros : The search function was very beneficial and enabled me to pull up results quickly for specific types of projects I was looking for.Tagging individuals allowed people to be recognized for good work, bringing success awareness to a whole team rather than simply an individual.Love the ability to follow both individuals and groups to see more in the feed.

Cons : I struggled getting Chatter to work effectively on my smart phone, so I was only able to read posts and not create posts myself. At times, I felt like the news feed did not adequately follow topics I was interested in. I would not receive updates as expected.I'm not sure that Chatter would be very beneficial in a smaller organization.

    Pretty Good

Chatter Use Cases and Deployment ScopeWe used Chatter as an internal social network to keep each other up to date across departments.

    Pros : Professional social network.

Cons : It can be a bit clunky and not user intuitive.File sharing could be better integrated with local drives.

  • Why wouldn't you use chatter?

Chatter is a great collaboration tool and a way to notify some of the executives who don't always live inside Salesforce of something that needs their attention. Simple to use interface. Allows users to adopt quickly as it is very similar to social media.

Pros : Easy to use, setup is a breeze and it allows notification for users that don't have a Salesforce license or that have one but don't spend as much time in Salesforce.

Cons : Emails can be a problem if users don't turn off notifications for things such as groups etc

    bottom-of-the-barrel software

Imagine you had a simple forum and an IM client. Take all the good features out of them, hand over the requirements to set of recent college graduates and you get Chatter. You are better off using something like Slack or Yammer. If you need to use Chatter in cooperation with partners, clients, etc. it will make you very responsive, but it's simply not an ideal solution for anyone or anything. When I give talks on major flops and flaws in software, this is one of the ones on top of my list. I know a lot of people that use the software that are OK with it, but it leaves a lot to be desired from a UI/UX perspective.

Pros : - Comes built-in with Salesforce - Encourages people to avoid email - Well documented API

Cons : - Desktop client is absolutely horrific - Mobile client is iffy - Email filtering is a joke - the configuration does not provide any type of real control

    Great collaboration tool

Chatter's interface is very clean and acts and feels like any other social media service you might use. The awesome thing about chatter is it makes collaboration on specific records and files so easy. Chatter can be implemented in Salesforce on any object, and you can create groups for specific puroses.

Pros : Update status to source information ´?¢ ask questions and get advice without sending a blast email. Share content that others might find valuable ´?¢ post presentations, docs, articles. The nice thing about Chatter is it's searchable so you can easily go back and find stuff. Chatter could be enabled for the entire organization only. So, if you say that you want only a had full of users to use Chatter then that's not possible.

Cons : I find that while #topics is a compelling idea, it's difficult to get our whole team to gel around certain core topics.

    What do you like best?

Update status to source information – ask questions and get advice without sending a blast email.

    What do you dislike?

Mobile. I'm an Android phone user and there isn't an official Chatter App, which limits my use of Chatter on the go. I believe there is an App already for the iPhone, and the Android version should be coming out soon.

-No Private Messages. Sure you can e-mail a coworker, but I think the option to just send a private message to an individual would make it easier, eliminating the need to switch applications.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Salesforce Chatter revolutionizes the way employees communicate with each other, especially in large organizations with a vast employee network or even small organizations with a workforce that is geographically dispersed.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

Organizing and archiving information is easy with tags. Just like Twitter, Chatter supports using hashtags ('#' followed by a keyword) so that you can search, track, and monitor trends or topics that are relevant and important to you.

Maintain & grow relationships – let people know what you’re working on and stay in tune with what they're up to by subscribing to people, opportunities, or accounts.

    What do you like best?

Being a field consultant, I see co-workers not in my immediate project team less than once a month. I almost never see overseas co-workers. Chatter allows us to share what we're working on, seek expertise from others, post content and communicate effortlessly and efficiently. Posts are linked to groups or records so past conversations can easily be retrieved. The Chatter API opens the door to exciting possibilities to integrate our other corporate apps.

    What do you dislike?

The UI inside of Salesforce.com is not very good, so I primarily use Chatter Desktop. Some people love collaborating, and others hate it. Therefore the topics that appear in my Chatter feed are biased towards those users who make 10+ posts a day.

  • Overall, Chatter feels like a big step in the right direction for sales organizations to get more social and community-oriented with their sales approach. The application can decrease duplicated work, increase the efficiency and speed at which a sales team acts on opportunities and improve internal communications. Though it’s rather costly and probably more useful for large businesses, Chatter is powerful enough to warrant further exploration of your business needs.

  • Chatter is a real-time enterprise social collaboration application and platform. Salesforce.com has made Chatter available in private beta with more than 5,000 customers over the last five months to rave reviews. Today, Chatter goes live for all of salesforce.com's more than 77,300 customers globally.

  • Chatter loses to Yammer on feature comparison but it’s saving grace is adding microblog communication to an existing SalesForce CRM subscriber. But without SaleForce to give Chatter some life, the missing features for Project Management, Document Management, Task Management, and Instant Messaging really hurt Chatter’s image as an Enterprise Social Network. I would choose any other Enterprise Social Network reviewed here before Chatter unless I was heavily committed to the SalesForce CRM.

  • Let's face it--staying connected is a selective process. So organizational design for people accustomed to matrix organizations may be a step ahead in this social collaboration model, though frequent users of social media will also be quick to adapt to Chatter's look and feel.
