  • Chatter Use Cases and Deployment ScopeWe used Chatter as an internal social network to keep each other up to date across departments.

    Pros : Professional social network.

Cons : It can be a bit clunky and not user intuitive.File sharing could be better integrated with local drives.

  • Chatter is a great collaboration tool and a way to notify some of the executives who don't always live inside Salesforce of something that needs their attention. Simple to use interface. Allows users to adopt quickly as it is very similar to social media.

Pros : Easy to use, setup is a breeze and it allows notification for users that don't have a Salesforce license or that have one but don't spend as much time in Salesforce.

Cons : Emails can be a problem if users don't turn off notifications for things such as groups etc

  • What do you like best?

Chatter gives your sales people the ability to collaborate about projects, accounts, etc and keep the information stored in a central location instead of 50 emails back and forth. Simple to use.

    What do you dislike?

Tough to gain adoption with sales as they are all used to using Outlook for everything.

In efforts of helping to consolidate a number of various point tools into a simple, centralized umbrella is certainly key to ensuring an effective process and not require jumping back and forth between various tools, logins, etc.

This allows for effective communication amongst colleagues on a particular lead, contact, account, opportunity, etc. This also allows for relative collaboration and feedback directly on the area of interest; again, avoiding the need to jump back and forth between tools, copy and paste links, URLs, feedback, everything of that nature.andnbsp; The notes are tied directly to the source in Salesforce.com, giving an easy to access history/log trail of the conversation had between your colleagues.

Furthermore, this allows for easy collaboration across various departments as well. For example, connecting the dots between sales and finance teams with respect to account statuses, late payments, special terms, etc.andnbsp; Essentially allows everyone to do their own day-to-day work, but be kept in the loop regarding updates and changes that happen above and beyond what they're tasked to do or responsible for overlooking (simpler account management).

    Pros :

    • One-stop-shopping for collaboration of colleagues on a per entry basis in Salesforce.com (leads, accounts, contacts, opportunities, accounts, etc.).
    • Simple notification method; each change, update, or new entry to an ongoing Chatter will feed will be communicated via email of the change (also with a quick and easy link back to the Salesforce.com entry to go back to the original source).
    • Ability to attach files is a nice time-saving element as it avoids the need to email certain files or correspondence outside of the chat feed (helps keep everything consolidated as everything you need is available right within the feed).

    Cons :

    • Don't really have any complaints about this add-on as it really helps with communicating key details on a per entry basis across various employees, departments, stakeholders, etc.

Salesforce Chatter is a great way to stay on top of your Salesforce feeds without having to constantly log into Salesforce. It also lets you access files without having to log into Salesforce, making it easier to access important information quickly. The desktop integration allows for a single point to communicate with other Salesforce users in your organization and keeping up-to-date with individuals and groups you are following. Salesforce Chatter also gives you access to the mobile app, allowing you to obtain the same information you'd see on the Salesforce through a web browser.

    Pros :

    • Chatter Desktop is a great option to have as it allows Salesforce users to communicate with one another without having to download and use a separate private messaging program.
    • You can also keep your feed on top of your other applications without having to open a web browser to access Salesforce.
    • Chatter can be set up to start automatically on computer startup, allowing users to see what has been updated since the last logoff.
    • Everything you see within the Salesforce on your web browser, you'll also see on the desktop integration.
    • I also like having access to the mobile app so that I can access my information while on the go, when I don't have easy access to my computer.

    Cons :

    • Unless you're willing to pay an extra fee, you only have access to profiles, status updates, activity feeds, groups, file sharing, topics, and Chatter mobile. In order to access files through Chatter, your organization needs to authorize this option, which can be frustrating in large organizations with that have user counts in the hundreds.
    • If your company already uses a private messaging tool, then Salesforce Chatter seems rather redundant.
    • The search feature within Chatter is very difficult to navigate it's hard to switch between various views.
    • Chatter is a great add-on for Salesforce users, but I feel as though it is simply an integration that no one is interested in utilize, since we can communicate through email and phone calls are often much quicker.

A very useful tool that I have used to help manage very geographically dispersed teams. By doing updates in Chatter, I have been able to take away the view of "we don't know what is happening" as we have a constant flow of news coming out via the tool. andnbsp; This is really important when you have a very geographically distributed team and you can give them a constant flow of happenings without clogging up their email.

It is also quite helpful with recognition. We have the ability to put badges up on Chatter, so when reps go over plan they get a badge, when they win a deal they get a badge, along with recognizing our ecosystem and when they help us out. andnbsp; It's much better than an email thanks because everyone gets to see it and it is part of the record, unlike an email- a really handy way to foster collaboration.

    Pros :

    • Easy to use.
    • Teams can read and digest quickly.
    • We treat it like a newsfeed and like a newspaper- we know people won't read everything. Email is now our "breaking news" that they need to read.
    • It's great for sharing data from Salesforce.
    • Once people are on it and you post a lot, they then will read what is there, especially if you can move things over from email.
    • Great for getting information out to a distributed team- especially across geographies.

    Cons :

    • The search has always been tough- I often will remember something from Chatter but then can't find it later via search.
    • Stats would be great- top Chatter group, most active, most members, etc. You can do this through reporting, but more out of the box would be good to help employees know what different groups are doing.
    • I don't think Chatter has figured out knowledge management and where it sits in this ecosystem. It does a little knowledge management, but not so well (files, attachments, being able to mine the posts) and you often need to then use another system for mining any knowledge that is built up.

Chatter, when used correctly, can be a helpful and engaging communication tool for teams working collaboratively on projects living within SalesForce within their organizations. Chatter proves to be helpful in terms of having one stable location to store data and conversations about a project or prospect without fear of losing it to email issues, having documentation of follow-up's and conversations regarding specific points tasked to an individual, and promoting a collaborative team environment.

    Pros :

    • Very easy to use / lives in Salesforce.
    • Supported by an Android and iOs App.
    • It is a good way to keep all relevant Salesforce related data entry tasks and any questions you may have about a particular record in ONE place where it can be accessed quickly and easily.
    • The mobile application and support for this software is pretty great, and allows for easy communication on the go without having to do much searching, or cumbersome efforts to pull up information expressed while you were at your desk behind the monitor.
    • It’s truly a communication on the fly setting.

    Cons :

    • There are so many communication tools out there already that it really becomes a bore to use yet another communication platform again.
    • We've tried out a lot of chat/communication programs with different projects and depending on what the needs or desires of particular clients entail, so sometimes it seems a bit inconvenient to have a separate place where we are once again required to monitor and keep up-to-date on.
    • The groups function allows you to @mention an individual who is not a member of the group you are posting to, and they will never see this message because of that but you wouldn't be the wiser to this fact unless you see that the letters of their username BARELY turn the color gray to relay that information.
    • That had been frustrating several times when we think someone got the message but didn't, and the ball is dropped.
