  • What do you like best?

My first experience with wuala was with a USB flashdrive that I bought which was linked with Wuala so that all of my data on this flash drive was backed up to an online cloud account. I loved that all of my data on my flash drive was backed up online because I could then carry it with me in a portable manner in case I didn't have internet access, but if I had internet or if I didn't have the physical drive on me, I could just reach it on the web.

    What do you dislike?

I disliked that they make your account inactive if you don't upload things for a while. I would rather have an account that will allow me to keep my documents in it for a long period of time without having to constantly update it. Furthermore, when I got on to renew my account and add more files, I discovered that they are now discontinuing secure cloud storage and deleting all files that had been stored on there before. Luckily I have the flash drive so my documents are backed up on that but for people who used the secure cloud storage exclusively, this would be a huge issue.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Don't plan on using it for secure cloud storage--they do have another company that they go through for secure cloud storage and if you are a wuala user you get a discount.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

This is an effective method of sharing a large number of documents within a company or a group of people because you can upload the documents on to the flash drive and share the drive with others while still having access yourself to the documents online. However now with the new policy of no secure cloud storage, I am not sure what benefits would really come from that.

  • Overall, we liked Wuala. It's a great general use secure backup solution which we wouldn’t hesitate in recommending.

    We liked:

A great balance between adequate security and genuine ease-of-use
    Flawless in operation
    Simple but effective mobile app
    Good, understandable documentation

    We weren’t so sure about:

Techies may feel there’s not quite enough to play with
Pricing rather high for large storage volumes

    We hated:

No free trial on consumer version
    No support phone number published

  • Wuala is a great choice for those looking for an inexpensive online backup solution with additional features such as synchronisation between computers.

  • Overall, for my use-case, Wuala looks to be a very good replacement for DropBox and whilst I'm certainly not going to close my account on the latter (not yet anyway), I'm going to give the Swiss provider a thorough run for both business and personal use. I may even be tempted to upgrade to the lowest paid tier if I find myself making extensive use - I've certainly been known to use up all of my DropBox allocation from time-to-time.

  • Overall, in the short time I have been using this program, while it may not have all the bells and whistles, I have found it having all the necessary features of a good sync program. Most importantly, security is top-notch and clearly a top priority. And the more I read on the forums and website about the technical details of how Wuala works, the more am I impressed and the more confidence I have in the developers to implement a secure product.

The only product that offers a similar, and possibly slightly stronger, level of security is SpiderOak. However, a clunky interface, only 2 GB of free storage and high memory and cpu consumption makes Wuala my current top pick for truly secure online cloud storage.

  • Without a doubt, Wuala's mesh network, security model for file encryption, and the "give space... get space" option definitely make Wuala worth every ounce of consideration. However, the lack of solid integration into the operating system and occasionally fickle performance could pose an issue for some.

  • Wuala is more sophisticated than any current online storage service and their desktop client. The features it puts at your disposal are extremely appealing, especially for the more seasoned computer users.
All in all Wuala comes packed with more than you would expect from a regular client for an online storage service. But it also comes with a pretty steep learning curve, considering today’s alternatives, many are not eager or willing to engage in.

  • We wanted to like Wuala, but it's let down by the lack of a web interface for your backups and the unnecessary distinction between backing up and synchronisation. We'd rather use the simpler Dropbox for general-purpose online storage and Livedrive for backup.

  • Overall, LaCie's Wuala is the best cloud storage and backup service I've seen yet from a large company. It is expensive, but the cost can be offset if you choose to trade storage. Cross platform support is good to see, and works well

  • Wuala combines secure online storage, file sharing, and community in a responsive Java app. You get 1GB free, which trails SkyDrive's 5GB, but Wuala adds easier sharing, an option to increase your storage by donating hard drive space, and a more-accessible public file area than SkyDrive's.
