Antivirus software in ways is almost like a bad word in the computer community because while it is necessary - nobody actually likes it. It costs money every year or so, and takes up precious system resources constantly scanning everything that passes through. Without it, though, your computer would be a train wreck in a short amount of time from essentially walking through a sewer naked, that is unless of course your computer is never on the internet and never has anything plugged into it that has been on the internet such as a thumb drive. Then you're probably ok, but that isn't too realistic.Enter Avast! Internet Security. It combines a pretty lightweight program, all things considered, that actually does a really good job at keeping your computer safe. The active scanners / shields on the system are updated constantly via Avast's cloud connection, usually receiving definition updates multiple times a day as new things are discovered. Its firewall does a fantastic job at blocking known malicious connections from ever reaching your computer by blocking them with a notification on the screen advising you of what action it took. Even emails in most typical clients are scanned beforehand for malicious attachments and quarantined immediately upon detection. You can even set it to handle SPAM email removal if your current provider's tools aren't quite up to snuff. It does, however, have a nasty habit of throwing up an advertisement for its other products every now and again even though you're in a paid version. Behavior like this is to be expected in their FREE licensed version, but is truly annoying considering you are already paying for the software. It is one thing to receive an email promotion now and again especially around renewal time, but to have physical pop-ups in the corner of the screen is not acceptable in my book.As a whole though I highly urge the product as the pop-ups aren't frequent and your system isn't bogged down to a crawl from just trying to protect itself.
In the race of the best Anti-Virus protection, you need to be very careful. There is many aspect that needs to be evaluated; virus detection, performance impact, report, and management feature list, etc. I had to evaluate many different Anti-Virus during the last year, and I have to admit our final choice is not VIPRE, sorry. We had very specifics requirement; No impact on performance, multi-platform (Windows/Mac/Linux), server-side exceptions and client-side exceptions. After testing more than 25 different antiviruses, I can tell it is very hard to find. I’ve also tested VIPRE Internet Security 2016 for Home to find a fit for my home computers, where the requirements are very different. First, the Security suite come with a lot of advanced features, like Firewall, Website Blocker, Edge Protection (zero-day threats), Anti-Malware, Social Watch, Search Guard, Auto Patch, Anti-Rootkit, Email Virus Protection, Spam Filter, Anti-Intrusion, etc! Very impressive for 50$ (based on shop.vipreantivirus.com) for a year, or 100$ for Lifetime. The UI is very clean, and the configuration come by default with the standard scanning schedule, Full scan once a week, Quick the other days. You don’t want to scan too much since it is resource intensive and unnecessary, you already “real-time-monitor”. The Quick scan will scan the most important files only. The Quick scan used 12% of my CPU and 100 MB of ram, during 11 minutes. That's a lot more than competitors, scanning 10x more files. I have 4 processes running: the Anti-Malware Service, the SBAMTray Application, the Plug-in Manager Service and the WebProxy.exe. When you open the UI, you will also have VIPREUI.exe. There is a “Catch Up Scan” option if a scheduled scan is missed, but they will only do a Quick Scan. You may miss all your full. The “Second Layer Scan” will run a full scan in case a risk is detected using a Quick Scan. I like the Battery Saver mode, to skip scans when on battery. The Email Filter (phishing, virus, spam) works with Outlook or POP3/SMTP. It won’t scan if you are using Gmail in IMAP. Updates are checked every 30 minutes by default, but can be customized. There is no setting to skip update on slow network (to save bandwidth), but the signature files are probably small.

Avast Internet Security falls right in the middle of our rankings this year. It's a solid Internet Security suite with great extra features. All and all, Avast Internet Security 2015 is a decent antivirus and antimalware program as long as you don't need tech support.More about Avast Internet Security

On one hand, we like that the overall look of VIPRE has had few changes from one year to the next. It's easy to become familiar with the software without having to hunt for things from one year to the next. Considering all these points, VIPRE Antivirus 2015 passes our tests with flying colors. It's not perfect, but no antivirus software is.More about VIPRE

VIPRE Internet Security 2014 combines a decent antivirus, a simple, accurate spam filter, and a disappointing firewall; it's all over the map. You'll do better with a suite whose components are uniformly strong.More about VIPRE
