KeePass Review by Cloudswave

How safe are you online? Are you certain that no one has your passwords? What would happen if a hacker discovered one of your passwords? If you have only one or two passwords for all of your accounts online, it could end up costing you dearly. Most people today have a large number of accounts online that require password authentication, and trying to remember the dozens of different passwords can seem impossible. You can't get around this problem by using the same password or using simple to remember passwords. In order to remain safe from all of the hackers out there, you need to have high quality, complex passwords.
Think about what would happen if someone gained access to one or more of your social media accounts and starting posting as if they were you? The possibilities are endless when it comes to the bad things that could happen all because of your passwords. It's time to stop living life on the edge and get those passwords safe and organized.
Fortunately, you can find some great software that can help make taking care of your password management much easier. One of the most popular password solutions people are turning to is KeePass. It is simple to use and really can help you improve your online security so you can enjoy the peace of mind you deserve.

What Feature Are Available With KeePass?

This password manager has some excellent features that help to make it a good and viable solution for those who need to get a better handle on their passwords. What are the features that make this such a good solution though?
First, there is the security that it offers. It utilizes Advanced Encryption Standard and the Twofish algorithm to ensure the password databases are properly encrypted. This is the same standard used by the NSA. Instead of only encrypting the password fields, they encrypt the entire database, meaning your notes, usernames, and other information is encrypted as well.
You also have the ability to use multiple user keys. There is a single master password that will decrypt the entire database, but you can also use key files if you choose. These can actually provide even greater online security. You can keep the key file with you on a USB stick, a disk, or a CD. If you choose this method, rather than the master password, you do need to be very careful that you do not lose the item that stores it. Some users actually go one step further and combine the two, meaning that the database will require the key file, as well as the master password, for the decryption. Since it can be carried on a USB, it also means that it is portable.
If you choose, you will also be able to export your password list in a variety of different formats including CSV, XML, HTML, and TXT, making it usable in other applications. By using special plugins, it is possible to export to other formats as well. In addition to the exporting, it is also possible to import from a number of different file formats. The password database contains only a single file, so you will be able to transfer it to another computer very easily if you wish.
Organization is easier with KeePass as well. You can great a number of password groups, which you can then modify and delete if needed. These password groups are helpful for those who want to keep their different passwords separate. For example, you may want to keep your work passwords, your social media passwords, and your online shopping passwords all in different groups. You will then be able to arrange the password groups into a "tree". The groups will then be able to have subgroups, and the subgroups can then have their own subgroups. This can make organization for a large number of passwords much simpler.
It offers an auto type function, auto type hot keys, and a drag & drop functionality to make it as easy as possible to get your passwords entered quickly, while still giving you whatever level of control you feel you need. It is possible to drag & drop fields, titles, usernames, passwords, URLs, and notes into different windows. Double-clicking can copy the value to the Windows clipboard, and it will clear the clipboard automatically a short time after copying a password into it. This is just another one of the bits of added security, so you do not have to worry about someone coming along later who has access to the password you copied.
One of the biggest problems that many people have when it comes to passwords is actually creating them. People always try to create something that will be easy for them to remember. However, this leads to weak passwords that can be cracked. With KeePass, you can have the system create high quality, random passwords for you. You can define the output of the characters including the type of characters and the number of characters.
Even though the system has a wide range of features, it does not have to be overly complicated to use. You can use only the features that you need.  It is available in more than 30 different languages already, and this number is growing.

How Much Do You Have to Pay for KeePass?

Certainly one of the best features of this software is that you do not have to pay anything no matter what edition you choose. It is entirely free. However, their site does have an option to make donations, and it is important to keep in mind that this is often how these developers make money to keep improving the product.

What Is the Difference Between the Editions?

Even though the system is free, there are two different editions available - KeePass 1.x and KeePass 2.x. The differences stem from what they support and what features are available. It's advisable to look at their site to see the differences and to choose the one that will work for your operating system, but we'll provide a quick rundown of the main differences here.
The KeePass 1.x system works for Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 7,8,10, Wine, where as KeePass 2.x works with Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 7,8,19, Mono (Linux, Mac). KeePass 2.x features full Unicode support and enhanced DPI support, whereas KeePass 1.x does not.
Both will offer key files and master passwords, as well as password quality estimation, but KeePass 2.x also offers the ability to enter the master key on a secure desktop. 2.x also offers many more features for groups and entries, including an internal attachment viewer and editor, recycle bin, entry tags, and group notes. It also offers groups results and sort search results. KeePass 2.x allows you to pick characters, auto type (TCATO), and more.
With KeePass 1.x, you can export to XML, HTML, CSV, KDB, and TXT. KeePass 2.x allows exporting from XML, HTML, CSV, KDB, KDBX, and XSL-Transformed. When it comes to importing 1.x imports from CSV, CodeWallet(Pro), TXT, Password Safe, and KDB. KeePass 2.x offers importing from more than 35 different formats. With the additions of plugins, it is possible to import and export from even more.
Even though there are two different editions available, both of them are undergoing active development. This means that the developers continue to refine them, add features, and make them easier to use and more functional overall. As they add and change features and come out with newer, updated versions, you will want to make sure you update your software to get access to them.
The download page on their site features downloads for the Classic as well as the Professional edition. They also have the portable versions for each of these editions available with a simple click. You can check out their online documentation so you can get started setting up the system and adding your passwords. If you have questions, you can check out their forums, the help section, and the technical FAQs. Most will have no trouble getting up to speed with the basics of using KeePass.

Why Should You Consider KeePass?

If you are like most people, you know that you aren't giving your passwords the attention and security that they really require in today's world. Whether you are using weak passwords, the same password for all of your sites, or you have trouble remembering your passwords, you need to have some help. KeePass provides you with the direction and organization that you need. It's easy to get started, and the download does not cost a thing.
Instead of hoping that you never lose or forget your password, or having to go through someone learning your password and stealing from you, take the time to consider using a quality password manager. KeePass is a great choice, and it has a treasure trove of different features available. It's not the only option out there, but for the price and the number of features, it is well worth considering.

KeePass is a secure password manager. The application allows you to sort the data by categories. For example, you can set the separate categories for the bank accounts data, email passwords, web projects' login data, etc. All the information in the KeePass database is encrypted using Advanced Encryption Standard algorithms (AES (256-bit), Rijndael) and Twofish. The program offers an ability to export data in TXT, HTML, XML, and CSV. For even greater security, KeePass automatically clears the clipboard after a period of time defined in the program settings. KeePass can synchronize data with the other computers and with cloud services, e.g. Dropbox. When the user creates a database, he/she can set the number of cycles to encrypt the master password. Du? to this the brute force protection level is increased. There are some additional levels of authentication in KeePass. It is possible to use the Windows user account and the key file along with the master password. The key file is any file chosen by the user. It could be a picture, mp3 file, etc. You can also use a key file instead of the password, but it is not recommended. The password database consists of an only one file that you can transfer and backup using the integrated manual feature. Using the plugins, you can automate backups and export data to the cloud services. The interface base has a tree-like format; you can create different groups to assign them names, delete them and change as you like. The number of groups is not restricted. This is a distinctive feature of KeePass from paid counterparts, in which, as a rule, groups are already set, and you cannot change them. In KeePass, there is also a possibility to add attachments. The app has a built-in viewer for text, documents and images.

Pros :

  • All platforms are supported.
  • Many options to increase the protection level.andnbsp;

Cons :

  • No virtual keyboard.
  • No web interface.

Thousand years ago, I was using KeePass to store my passwords. This is the time before Remote Desktop Manager and Lastpass. Having to type my password hundreds of time every day, to log in remote desktops or ssh sessions, it was a time saver. The good side of KeePass is the fact you own the password database. It’s not on a website you need to trust. The bad side of KeePass is the fact you own the password database. You need to backup it, and synchronize across your computers, what’s a pain! The UI is easy to understand, creating different folders and objects to store your password. There is an auto-type where you enter the window name, and when you do your key combination, KeePass detect the password base on the window name, and type it for you. It works fine for a remote desktop connection where the VM name is the window title, but with the web browser, it becomes hard to maintain. You can start the site from KeePass, and it will auto-fill and log. I think that Cloud-oriented services fit better my needs where I work from both home and office, working with many different computers, with different operating system. I get why people would like to keep the database control, but I think it limits possibilities. The application is free and Open-Source, that can be an advantage, but a disadvantage as well. There is a lot of people who has access to the source code, and may find breaches. It will be fixed, but not everyone has the latest version.

    Pros :

    • You own the password database, you are in charge of protecting it.
    • Easy to type the password in Windows applications.
    • Easy to work with service accounts.

    Cons :

    • The password database is local on the computer, and need to be manually synched or backup
    • If you have many computers, you may screw through the versions.
    • There are plugins and options, but not easy to maintain
    • Can’t access from your mobile phone and tablets.

The great features offered by Intuitive Password makes it a great password management solution. The free plan allows you to store upto 100 password for free, which is within the limit of most online users. If you are an internet geek and want to store more than 100, you can always upgrade to a premium plan at an affordable cost. We include Trend Micro among our list of the best computer protection software because a single license can protect up to three devices. Its Windows and mobile modules are quite competitive, more so than its Macintosh module. Some of Trend Micro’s competitors provide more online backup space and 24/7 access without charging for premium support. However it provides a few uncommon features such as parental controls and a password manager.

Trend Micro Password Manager 1.9 hasn't evolved in the last few years, so it's well behind the competition. A new version later this year may save the day, but for now, you'll do well to choose a different password manager.
