Nero for many years produces Suite mainly focused on mastering and archive files on external and mobile devices (such as DVD, CD, BluRay, etc.). The Nero Suites not only include the mastering software (better known as Nero Burning Rom ) but also of the additional Tools like the Cover designer, the wave editor, Nero Express (which is the simplified version of Nero Burning Rom for novice users) and other tools depending on the purchased versions.Nero BackItUp is, therefore, an extension of Nero, having it always worked effectively in the field of data storage and thus having acquired much experience in the past years. It is quite clear that the software company has decided to create a backup of the software, given it is this particular use this software can also be downloaded as a stand-alone product.

Pros :

  • The interface is very simple and minimalist, when opening the main features of the program are shown and at the center there's a big button to perform a backup immediately, how to perform a backup is very simple, is a wizard step by step and is affordable for any user, even the less experienced.
  • Nero BackItUp provides various backup mode, you can make granular data backup then choosing what folders or what files to include in a backup up to the full system backup.
  • You can also choose several possible destinations, including your Local Drive (not recommended in case of fault of your HardDisk), backups to external devices (USB Disks), backups to CD or DVD, backups to network devices (for example, a NAS ), and it can be used the Black Cloud (Online Storage) available as a result of a subscription.
  • Depending on the version of your subscription you also have the option to schedule the frequency of backups, you can set them daily, weekly, monthly and continuous (differential). It is obviously also included the restore option of your backups .
  • Another useful option is that you can back up even a mobile device by downloading the app on your mobile will then need to do a simple scan of the QRcode (returned by the PC software) and you can then select the location for your backup.

Cons :

  • If you have a few small file size for which to back up, the cost of on online storage space is quite high ($ 70), however, the space is "unlimited", so if you have large files that you need to back up this will be very helpful.

Mozy is one of those that you don't know you would ever need until your computer dies and leaves you with nothing but a brick and all your data lost. This light and easy to use application allows you to backup all of your files online aka in the cloud where your data will be safer than on your personal computer. There are loads of competitors in this segment, while Mozy is not the best at what it does it is very decent and priced adequately.

Pros :

  • The user interface is simple and comprehensive. Functions are where you expect them to be.
  • The restore option is well made. You are able to choose individual files to restore, and it happens rather quickly.
  • The sign-up process is pretty straightforward. You are able to create an account and start backing up your files in under 20 minutes.
  • It seems Mozy is more focused on simplicity rather than security. It doesn't appear to me that their servers in the backend are the safest out there, which may cause privacy concerns if you host confidential on this platform.
  • Mozy supports the most common operating systems as well as mobile devices where you are able to browse all your backed up files.

Cons :

  • The first backup is really slow even if your internet bandwidth is above average. Expect to spend upwards of 2 hours per gigabyte of data.
  • Mozy is affordable but not ideally priced compared to its competitors. I believe it does not have a free version and the different tiers offer less space than most other software.
  • You are forced to upgrade to a server version of the software if you run Mozy on a server. Even if you do not use any of the server specific features such as Hyper-V backup, you have to purchase the extra key to even run Mozy.

Overall, Nero BackItUpandBurn is worth its price. Though a lot of the functionality it offers can be found in various freeware programs, the package's integration and largely intuitive interface elevate Nero's solution to a step above. If you want to backup, synchronise, recover and burn data, it's definitely worth checking out.

In closing, IBackup is a bit of a mess. The core service works well, but the documentation, pricing, and security leave a lot to be desired. The general cold shoulder for Mac OS, security-wise, makes me think IBackup/IDrive isn't really serious about supporting it.

Mozy's biggest sin wasn't mentioned in any of the reviews. An obvious reason for making backups is to be protected from accidentally deleting files. If your fingers slip while typing, you can wipe out dozens of files and not realize it. Or someone else using your computer might delete them. Or there may be a glitch in the file system and Windows loses track of some files. If you delete a file by accident and don't notice it, Mozy will delete the backups of the file too. I kid you not.
