Getting my iMac and Win8 PC to share data in a straight-forward way was proving extremely difficult. Sharing folders between the two using inbuilt functionality is a very unstable way of doing things, and very unreliable. I work most of the time with my Mac, and wanted to back my stuff up to the PC in order to use Acronis to back that up online. Having tried a variety of solutions (cheap FTP stuff was utterly unreliable and other trials didn't seem to work either) I had almost given up. I gave goodsync a try and it does genuinely work. I was hoping that I'd only have to buy one license to be able to sync stuff between the 2 machines, but this isn't the case. I did have to buy a license for Windows as well as a version for Mac. Ultimately it works flawlessly and very quickly too. I've only used it across my local network so not sure how it would work over the Internet (I think it has that functionality but not sure!) Definitely recommended for cross-platform backup / syncs.

Symantec System Recovery (better known as Backup Exec depending on the version you bought) is a great tool that allows you to manage in full autonomy and an extremely centralized backup of the various servers, thus allowing complete control from a single tool avoiding the waste time and various oversights.

Pros :

  • The power of Symantec is definitely the ease of use (the Symantec Management Console is really well done, complete, well grouped and well divided into tabs), the different possible operations (eg. Full backups, incremental backups, backup to removable media , CD, etc.
  • You can also map many differents network drives.
  • One of the most useful and very convenient features is, for example, the possibility with which you can make a backup of a server as an "image" and restore it even to different hardware.
  • It obviously works on both physical and virtual environments, can therefore also be used for a virtualization plan.
  • Often it is also useful if you need to make a migration of data or entire infrastructure.
  • Backups can follow different schedules, can include individual applications, files, various settings until you get a complete operating system.
  • You can also set several restore points to restore not carry too heavy duty.
  • Another functionality is to have granular restores, with this feature you can then go and retrieve the individual files you need and restore it in its original place (for example, if a user has accidentally deleted a single file from a single folder).

Cons :

  • Using the interface of the agents you can add various "plug-ins", these allow you to customize the product as possible to meet your needs, the majority of these, however, requires payment extra.
  • As standard option (add- on excluded) backups are only allowed in Full option, this will then prompt you require more free space on the servers, most of the backup processing time (which is not very performant) greater attention to the management of the various servers, more maintenance.

Norton is still one of the best choices of IS software on the market and with the discounts available widely on the Internet, it represents very good value for money. We'd prefer to see it being a little less Internet dependent for functions like help, but in other ways, like its Pulse updates, that same aspect provides extra protection that can be very valuable. However, some other providers have built in multi-platform support at a lower cost and offer a larger online storage allowance than Symantec’s 2GB.
