Antivirus software in ways is almost like a bad word in the computer community because while it is necessary - nobody actually likes it. It costs money every year or so, and takes up precious system resources constantly scanning everything that passes through. Without it, though, your computer would be a train wreck in a short amount of time from essentially walking through a sewer naked, that is unless of course your computer is never on the internet and never has anything plugged into it that has been on the internet such as a thumb drive. Then you're probably ok, but that isn't too realistic.Enter Avast! Internet Security. It combines a pretty lightweight program, all things considered, that actually does a really good job at keeping your computer safe. The active scanners / shields on the system are updated constantly via Avast's cloud connection, usually receiving definition updates multiple times a day as new things are discovered. Its firewall does a fantastic job at blocking known malicious connections from ever reaching your computer by blocking them with a notification on the screen advising you of what action it took. Even emails in most typical clients are scanned beforehand for malicious attachments and quarantined immediately upon detection. You can even set it to handle SPAM email removal if your current provider's tools aren't quite up to snuff. It does, however, have a nasty habit of throwing up an advertisement for its other products every now and again even though you're in a paid version. Behavior like this is to be expected in their FREE licensed version, but is truly annoying considering you are already paying for the software. It is one thing to receive an email promotion now and again especially around renewal time, but to have physical pop-ups in the corner of the screen is not acceptable in my book.As a whole though I highly urge the product as the pop-ups aren't frequent and your system isn't bogged down to a crawl from just trying to protect itself.

Pros :

  • High performance and low impact design.
  • Very affordable pricing.
  • Constant updates.
  • Built in Antivirus, Firewall and Spam Blocker.

Cons :

  • Advertisements regardless of paid version.
  • SPAM blocker can be a bit aggressive at times.

Bitdefender is essentially the Cadillac of Antivirus in my opinion. From it's incredibly efficient coding to its various tiers of protection levels there is something out there that will fit everyone's budget and needs. Its autopilot feature is just that - Autopilot. Set it and forget it as Ron Popeil used to say. It will constantly check for updates to the software and it's definition library, it's active shields and active scanners constantly check all incoming data, but without crippling your computer system in the process. It provides an optional widget at install that can be disabled to show just how much activity Bitdefender actually has going on within your system which can come in pretty handy. The user interface has undergone many changes throughout its life, reaching now a minimalist design with your most important options / features directly on the home screen and a simple set of configuration items within each. Though rarely do you ever have to actually set anything other than autopilot as the built-in firewall is great at figuring out your local network and marking it as safe so other computers / printers / servers / etc. can be accessed with no interruption and the active shields jump into place blocking access to malicious files and quarantining them. As well as blocking access to known infected / malicious websites within your browser and as incoming connection attempts from across the internet.Bitdefender Central lets you easily and quickly deploy your license(s) to your computers and monitor their status from a single web interface included regardless of which Bitdefender product you purchase. Scanning of external media upon insertion such as CDs / DVDs and USB Hard Drives / Thumb Drives can sometimes be cumbersome, especially with optical media as it is usually immediately scanning as well as trying to scan for and launch Auto Play which will pretty much leave the disc useless until it's done scanning or you cancel the scan. I recommend setting the option to Ask if it becomes an issue.

Pros :

  • Fast and efficient design / coding.
  • Easy to use and navigate User Interface.
  • Good pricing / tiering options dependent on needs and wants.
  • Auto Pilot mode.
  • Powerful active shields.
  • Constant updates.
  • Free Year Version upgrades with valid license.

Cons :

  • Slow scanning of external media.

Avast Internet Security falls right in the middle of our rankings this year. It's a solid Internet Security suite with great extra features. All and all, Avast Internet Security 2015 is a decent antivirus and antimalware program as long as you don't need tech support.

ven though Bitdefender Internet Security 2015 didn't get a perfect score in our antivirus tests, it did well elsewhere, so we're going to consider Bitdefender to be a generally strong Internet Security suite in that regard. Tech support remains a weak spot; add to that ongoing complexity (and cost) in their tech support system, and Bitdefender slides a few positions this year.

I just cannot recommend Bitdefender Total Security as issues like lack of support for features and customer service need to be better. Bitdefender needs to work on customer service and getting clear information to their customers when they do offer features in their software.
