About RescueTime

RescueTime is a frictionless web-based time management tool that keeps track of what you do and for how long when you are on your computer. Users download a desktop application from RescueTime that does all the tracking work. There is no data entry needed from the user’s perspective. The application keeps track of which window is “in focus” when you are on your computer, and logs what activity you are doing and for how long you are doing it. The application also has an idle timer so if you step away from your computer RescueTime does not inflate the amount of time you spent on a given activity.

RescueTime is a web-based program with extensions for browsers or client for computer, and it allows you to categorize sites as productive or not. It does a good job of filling most of the common sites with proper tags, and you can add tags to those that it did not recognize or adjust them. The extension itself is light and from the website, you can see a clear picture where your time has went and also add some goals like 4 hours of productive time per day, etc. The dashboard gives you a good overview of your activities, and you can generate reports, check certain sites you visited and much more. You can also set RescueTime to send you weekly reports to your email that is a nice feature. The web interface is where RescueTime shines since I cannot think anything that should be added there; it's nearly perfect. Also, if you use the desktop client, you will see all the programs you have used in addition to websites you have visited. This app can help you manage your internet usage, and you can even be shocked how much you spent on some sites. I think that this is the best time managing software there is now, and the free version has served me well but if you want some advanced things you can upgrade to premium version. You can also install RescueTime on multiple computers if you have home/work machine or laptop, so you get data from every machine you use. So if you are planning on getting some time management software, I think you should try this! And if you are struggling with your productivity this will help you with it.

    Pros :

    • Free version offers almost everything you need.
    • Has browser extensions, and desktop apps.
    • Works great with multiple devices.
    • Lightweight.

    Cons :

    • Premium version is pretty pricey.

Not everyone can boast high efficiency, because Internet has so much fun. There are thousands funny videos on YouTube, hundreds new messages on the Facebook wall etc. Instead of doing something useful, we are returning to these pages again and again to read new messages on the wall, to check the new email messages, to watch a bunch of funny videos etc. And then we are usually surprised to find that the working day is almost over, but nothing was done. RescueTime helps to determine which sites you visit most frequently, providing a visual report about aimlessly spent time. RescueTime is a web service which provides the clients for Windows, Linux and Mac. There is also an Android app. RescueTime client silently runs in the background and monitors all user activity (not only in browsers but also in other applications). Data is periodically transmitted to the server, where the statistics are gathered. RescueTime generates a variety of reports regarding the computer use: for a certain period of time, for an amount of time which user spends on different sites, for the time spending in different applications etc. The service can even compare your efficiency with the similar parameters of other RescueTime users. To ensure that the data collected by the service is as accurate as possible, you can choose statistics gathering only during working hours and days. In this case, RescueTime will not reduce your efficiency, if the child watches the cartoon on your laptop in the evening. Also, you can temporarily disable RescueTime from collecting statistics. There is also great FocusTime mode which helps concentrate only on important sites and apps during the working hours.

    Pros :

Can be used for social networks blocking Great visual reports Works across multiple devices 3-month report history in the free version Weekly report delivered right to the mailbox.

    Cons :

No iOS version Premium version is costly.
