In the tech community, Pivotal Tracker is a standard tool for coordinating teams on the same programming project. It divides tasks into "Epics" (large projects) and "Stories" (smaller tasks) and shows the state of each project and task - percent completed by project, and whether tasks are done / soon to be done / on ice. andnbsp;Pivotal Tracker is a good, solid tool for a team to use and one that I have chosen for some of my own projects. It is used by many other teams outside Pivotal Labs, the consulting company that originally created it, and is the standard tool used at Pivotal Labs.

Pros :

  • Pivotal Tracker automatically measures the work pace of individuals and teams. This is a very nice feature to have, as it really helps the team estimate how much it can get done over the course of a given week or another time period.
  • Then, Pivotal Tracker can automatically assign tasks within the projects to team members based on how quickly they are shown to work. andnbsp;Pivotal Tracker is also a good product for encouraging team members to take their own tasks - all the tasks are shown on a board and team members can auto-assign tasks, or be assigned tasks by any other team member.

Cons :

  • One disadvantage is that Pivotal Tracker locks teams into a Kanban-oriented style of project management. Not all teams choose to visualize their projects in this way.
  • I have worked with a number of teams that used other methods for project management, and the Kanban style can at times be a distraction for more top-down teams. andnbsp;
  • Pivotal Tracker also has a noticeable learning curve to be used properly, especially for people who have not worked with this style of project organization before. Specifically, the "Stories", "Epics" and the settings within them are not the most intuitive names and the controls are not the easiest to use.

Working on the big projects is not an easy task. Therefore, the task management tool matters. Planio is the one that could be considered for project managers, for teams, and for start-ups. This tool promises no installation, no set-up costs and no long-term commitments. The good thing about it is that Planio supports a lot of task management models. In particular, agile projects with Scrum and Kanban or sequential planning using the Waterfall Model are supported. It is possible to build the roadmaps providing summary project information via a dashboard interface. Planio offers 14 separate apps in total, so everyone can choose the right one for the particular project. Apps could be activated at any time, so it is possible to keep the things simple. Here you will find very good bug tracker. However, there are no default values. The user needs to define a lot of details, e.g. components, statuses, priorities. You can set the milestones and work with the auto-generated Gantt Chart. There is also files, calendar and wiki support. There is also Google Calendar integration. Planio is deeply integrated with GitHub. It is possible to specify that the commit is connected to the bug or even to close the bug with the commit. It is possible to view the file tree and the commit history for every bug. The manager can assign a role for each team member. The roles are highly configurable, so every team member could have his own responsibilities. The time spent on projects is also tracked. The user can use the stopwatch for tracking the time and enter some comments about time spent on the particular issue.

Pros :

  • Free trial (no credit card required).
  • Built-in time tracking.
  • Communication with the team members.
  • Repository management.

Cons :

  • No task dependencies.
  • No critical path management.
  • No critical chain management.

Pivotal Tracker will, of course, feel most at home in businesses. It will save you time and money and the fact it is web-based and accessible from everywhere (there is even an iOS version for the iPhone and iPad) will appeal to any business, no matter how big or small. It’s a unique tool for managing your workflow, and if you’ve never found a project tool that worked great for your team, be sure to give it a try.
