  • Solid for project management

We use this with the software project team but use something else for the marketing department. The expression "horses for courses" comes to mind. It's easy to collaborate on a project.

Pros : simple for the user, keep track of lots of projects and issues.

Awesome way to stay in the loop with engineering

I'm a PR manager so it's important for me to know what engineering is up to for upcoming news hooks. Jira has been a great way for me to be in the loop without having to consistently reach out.

Pros : Love the wiki feature - makes it easy for me to ask questions about any upcoming releases and so that everyone can see the answers.

Cons : Hard to sign in sometimes if you're not using the correct web address.

Once you get their licensing model, you see the value

We had several tool for manage projects over the years, and took time to learn that Jira would cover most of our needs for project communication, time tracking, issue tracking, among other things. This is a powerful product that will allow you to scale, and is very flexible. There are a number of add-ons and other applications (such as Bamboo, Jira Agile, Service Desk that you can buy and extend your service, of course depending on your needs. We use Jira for Agile and Confluence to manage our Agile projects, the integration between those 2 components is great and besides the company apps you can go to the app market to find new ones. I must say that the product exceeded our expectations, their customer support is a bit weak, or at least my experience wasn't that good. But overall, it worth the money.

Pros : It can be an issue tracker, a classic project management and an agile tool among other things. Also, the licensing model is per use and bands, you start with 10 users at 10 USD/month, and if you pass the 10 users will automatically switch to the 15 users at 50 USD and so on, but if you use less than 10 again it charges you 10 USD/month again. Their customization of issues workflows is great. For Kanban there is a catch: you can add all the columns you want, but you need to configure those in th

Cons : The configuration of the whole system takes some time to do it. Of course if you want to implement the different processes, such as your development process, the issues statuses, etc. Their customer support is a bit weak, like mostly every huge company.

  • JIRA - not only a bug tracker

JIRA Use Cases and Deployment ScopeAtlassian JIRA is widely used in our organization by almost all departments including Sales, Business Analysis, Product Development, Solution Delivery, Quality Assurance and Customer Support. We have several independent instances of JIRA which are used for different purposes with transparent integration between instances and to and from instances of Atlassian Confluence which is also a highly recommended product. JIRA is not only a bug tracker in our corporate network but also a task management system for solution delivery, as well as external ticket tracking, task tracking and our requests management system which we use to communicate with customers.

Pros : JIRA is a highly customizable tool, almost anything can be adjusted to satisfy various requirements for metrics and charts expected by stakeholders.Wide selection of pre-installed tools for reporting allows users to have very useful dashboards for clear data representation (sometimes it's even better that pure Excel with its Pivot Charts).Configurable workflow allows us to have separate life cycles for each project, where "Almost Waterflow" is next to Scrum and DevOps.

Cons : While configurable, JIRA requires a certain amount of effort to extend its data schema with new attributes, especially if those attributes need to be calculable or carry some logic behind them - like if you need to calculate the amount of re-opens per ticket throughout the project, it's far from an easy task to do.Having quite so many chart options, JIRA still lacks some important ways of data visualization. And there usually comes the almighty "Export to Excel" and Pivots.Sometimes it's hard to

Pretty good for tracking a lot of work or a lot of people

JIRA Use Cases and Deployment ScopeAtlassian JIRA  is a really powerful tool that we used mostly for bug tracking and customer support tickets. We used it to ensure that nothing fell through the cracks and that we, mostly, met our SLAs. It was phased out over the past year, but for years it was the best solution we had to workflow management.

Pros : Atlassian JIRA has very powerful permission settings so that we can create workgroups with particular access levels to control who saw what information and what they could do with it.We used workflow settings to ensure that no steps in the process got skipped and to keep track of who was responsible for every ticket at every step of the process.

Cons : It was a lot of work to administer Atlassian JIRA for a company of just 75 people. It was almost a full-time job for me, which is one of the reasons we changed tools. It's not very user-friendly. It took me a few months to start feeling comfortable with the administration settings.

Great for a small team, potential for a large one

JIRA Use Cases and Deployment ScopeAs a small software startup, we use JIRA to manage our development pipeline. We log development ideas in the platform, identify priorities, communicate regarding developments and clarification, and keep track of what's been implemented. We're currently maintaining one version of our software while developing a completely new version from scratch to be launched later this year. JIRA helps us keep track of the priorities and projects regarding both of these develpment tracks.

Pros : Helping you prioritize; you can determine the estimated time for a project, score them by business value, and organize them into different categories.Communication; comments on tickets are emailed to the person who created them, so it's easy to maintain a back and forth conversation without having to have meetings or send emails.Planning multiple projects at once; it's hard to keep track of tickets when developing multiple versions of software, but JIRA makes it easy by allowing you to set up di

Cons : The sync between JIRA and Zendesk's support site could be better.JIRA has a great UI, but some clicks could be reduced in some areas by allowing lists to be editable without having to actually go into the tickets.Email notifications can be overwhelming if a developer is plowing through a list of your tickets. Would be better if JIRA sent an update summary email every hour or so, instead of an update for each ticket.

  • Highly-configurable requirement- and bug tracking solution

    What do you like best?

JIRA has an excellent workflow engine that can be easily configured for any type of needs. Workflow editing tool gives you a possibility to create a complex workflow only with drag-and-drop. On the other side, the workflow can be configured with various complex rules to be applied on status changes or on the external information.

As an Administrator you can create and manage different types of entities, like "bugs", "user stories", or if you need "customers" or "projects". Dynamic views can be modified for each entity type, so that you have the information that matters.

    What do you dislike?

JIRA installation on-premise is quite complex and requires extensive experience for System Administrator.

Moreover, JIRA requires good infrastructure behind, that increases costs of the complete on-premise solution.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Be ready that you will need to read the documentation to configure your workflows properly. Workflow configuration cannot be easily changed once entities start using the newly implemented workflow. Therefore, consider workflow design step in your implementation process.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

JIRA helps us to track progress of development projects transparently, easily and quickly. Automation procedures that are applied to the workflow process decrease the amount of manual work and increase the quality of status tracking and synchronisation of tasks statuses across multiple systems.

    What do you like best?

I have used Jira at my last couple jobs. They have added a lot of functionality over the past few years, and at this rate I might even start to like it one of these days! The various search filters and dashboard widgets are my favorite part. As far as project management software goes, I've definitely used worse.

    What do you dislike?

Once you have a few thousand issues in the system, it becomes SO difficult to find a specific issue that you are looking for, especially if it is not assigned to you. I'm not sure why, since the search tools are pretty robust, but I think this is caused by the fact that if you have dozens of users submitting buys/enhancements, they often use slightly different terms to describe projects, making keyword searches less helpful. Unless you have an admin who is on top of all the categorizing and management, the whole system becomes unwieldy. Linking issues together also uses an unwieldy process.

    What do you like best?

We use JIRA extensively for issue management and tracking. Each team has a project and it is a great way to work amongst teams and collaborate. The tool is very versatile and great to have project leaders, watchers, stakeholders, etc. They also have powerful and customizable searches and dashboards to keep track of projects you've reported, own, or are watching.

    What do you dislike?

It can be a little hard to use because it has so many features, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

  • The bottom line is that Jira is an excellent choice for managing your business’s many projects, campaigns, and activities. It is customizable, and yet ready to use out of the box. It can manage just about any project, regardless of size, but it won’t seem bulky when you’re managing simple tasks or issue tracking.
