  • Basecamp 3 is terrible

New Basecamp 3 is frustrating, I'm an old customer and previous versions was so much easier to use. Too bad, I really wish it will be better. I have to use something else now.

Pros : Customer support is good as always

Cons : Everything else - new UI, features set etc

    3 years of using Basecamp

I started using Basecamp when it was on ´?¢sheet of paper design´?¢, aka Basecamp Classic, since 2009. It always was a huge time saver and an awesome collaboration app.

Pros : Ease of setup and use. Basecamp's team worked through all the details of every important flow in the application. Like what exactly does a person see when he or she is invited to a new app? What exactly happens if your subscription is suspended? Who gets the notification? etc. I love their attention to detail. It makes Basecamp so much better than the alternatives.

Cons : I don't see any, otherwise I won't be using it for 5 years obviously.

Too noisy, doesn't really create much value

I used Basecamp for managing app development projects for a client in London, but found it to be too much work for very little benefit. I'd recommend Trello instead - it's more organized. Basecamp led us to keep jumping from chats to files to tasks to hunt for information, which became time intensive and costly. Considering the price, I wouldn't bet on Basecamp, unless someone from your organization knows how to get the most out of it.

Pros : It's nice that you can reply to tasks/chats from your email and not have to go back to Basecamp.

Cons : Basecamp needs better templates for organizational workflow.

Basecamp is a great tool for design projects, less so for technical projects

Basecamp Use Cases and Deployment ScopeBasecamp was used to manage projects by teams. We were able to solve the problem of not having a central server to store documents on, by collecting notes, documents and design files in one accessible location.

Pros : Very simple to upload notes and documents. The whole interface is very easy to pick up.Managing multiple projects at one time was easy with dashboard view.

Cons : The calendar could be more robust. I'd like to be able to see what a specific user is doing across multiple projects.

Getting Organized and Keeping On Task with Basecamp

Basecamp Use Cases and Deployment ScopeAs a freelancer serving a variety of clients, I needed a way to organize each project. After looking at different options, I settled on Basecamp for several reasons. First, is has a tiered pricing structure that will allow my business to grow when needed. Second, it helps prevent the dreaded lost/buried email problem. When you're corresponding with over a dozen different clients in any one week, it can be impossible to keep tabs on the important emails even with a convoluted system of folders and starred items. Basecamp keeps everything organized and in one place. Third, it allows me to set deadlines that are integrated with my calendar, so I get notifications on my phone when items are due. Finally, the document storage and ability to have comment threads attached to documents is extremely useful. I can post draft design options and the client can give feedback in the same spot, rather than needing to refer to an email attachment or download from remote storage.

Pros : I really enjoy the ability to pick and choose which participants of a particular Basecamp will get each conversation thread and reply. The To-Do list feature is one of the most useful that I've found anywhere, with the big plus that I can subscribe to the feed from my Google calendar. While this feature is only for Gmail users, I'm a big fan of the new "View on Basecamp" button that appears in the preview of every email from Basecamp. That way I don't even need to open the email, I can just click

Cons : Basecamp's search feature could use some filtering. For example, I should be able to just search files or to-do lists.I wish that the main projects page had more information about each project, specifically what date it started, how many people are in the project, and if there are any upcoming deadlines. While you can find this information currently, it's in several different areas. The start date in particular is a pain to find. For projects with a lot of files, I would appreciate a feature that

  • Project management platform Basecamp offers an intuitive suite of tools, inexpensive yet highly valuable premium features, and an environment that scales well as your business grows. It's our Editors' Choice for project management software.

  • Basecamp is a great tool for collaborative projects without a lot of dependent tasks. It will appeal strongly to teams that already work well together and who know how the project fits together. It will also appeal strongly to anyone who has been turned off by the complexities of other project management tools in the past.

  • Overall, I think Basecamp is a pretty good project management tool. It combines everything and anything you need and makes it all easy to find with its intuitive design. After using Basecamp Classic for so long, the latest version of Basecamp is a breath of fresh air. I’ve been a fan of 37signals and Basecamp for a long time, and I’m always looking forward to new features. However, with Basecamp, I found that there were a few simple (but very significant) features missing. Basecamp has been a big player in the industry of project management tools for quite some time, but I think there are other newer players that are willing and able to take over a good part of the market in the foreseeable future.

  • Basecamp is one of the most popular ones, and for good reason. It offers so many features as standard, such as having single-page projects and a place to combine your projects, employees, companies, vendors and other details in one cloud-based location. Whether you need to manage a small project for your book club or little league team or multiple large projects for business, you can find a use for Basecamp. With low monthly costs, a free trial to start with and multiple features on each plan, there’s nothing to lose.

  • Whilst we are still ironing out the best way to use Basecamp, I would still say the verdict is unwaveringly positive. 37signals have designed a tool entirely from the point of view of the user: rather than getting carried away with codes and widgets, the creators have zoned in on what is essential to project management and made that work beautifully instead.

  • Simple, awesome project management

    What do you like best?

Basecamp is dead simple to use and makes our team 1000 times more productive! I love the Progress feature, which quickly keeps me up to date on our projects and what everyone is working on. Projects are easy to set up and collaboration is a breeze. Love that I can manage my projects via the mobile app and always stay up to date on the go. Excellent integration with most all major software vendors and plenty of 3rd party apps.

Our management team also enjoys the product, allowing them easy access to quickly view project status and updates. We also have 3 employees on our team that are remote, and Basecamp makes it super simple to collaborate with them as well.

    What do you dislike?

Basecamp needs a better calendaring feature to better manage deadlines. I'd like to see better file integration so at files can be previewed without being downloaded. The new mobile app is much better, but lacks a few features found in the desktop.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Give it a try and you won't be disappointed. The ease of use won't be found in any other solution.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

Full project mangement for an 8-person marketing team. We've seen awesome benefits in productivity, as well as better collaboration across our entire team.

    Excellent Project Management Tool

    What do you like best?

I love that Basecamp ease of use. The website is clean and easy to navigate. The ability to have discussion and upload files is a great addition to the to-do list function (which is probably what my colleagues and I use the most). The fact that you can set due dates and assign tasks to certain people is a great organizational tool. The fact that all tasks from all projects are synced onto a single calendar is also helpful. It is also very useful to have the ability to add different people to different projects.

    What do you dislike?

The one thing that I wish you could do is view and edit files within Basecamp. Before viewing a file you must actually download it- you can't even see a PDF version. Just adding the PDF preview would be incredibly useful. I have also found instances where I wanted to, for example, add a name to a list in an excel document and I could not do so. I had to download the file, edit it, reupload the file, and delete the old one. This was cumbersome.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you need a simple project-management tool then look no further! This platform is easy to use and useful with no missing features.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

Communication, organization, and productivity have all been improved. It is a great way to know what everyone else is doing and to have a calendar of tasks to complete to keep yourself organized and on-track to complete a project.

Not recommended for detailed project management

    What do you like best?

The interface looked nice and it was fairly easy to set up and move between projects and tasks. Since Basecamp is web based, it made it easy for all users to access whether they were on location or remote. The speed was good as well.

    What do you dislike?

There were no features built in for tracking or accountability. People could upload notes and documents, but there isn't reporting available for a way to export a project plan and easily track deadlines being completed or staying on point. I also couldn't connect budgets, costs or risk into the projects. The program became as convoluted as everyone just sending emails back and forth and users lost interest and stopped logging in.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If your company is small and you don't have corporate sponsors who want a status report that includes traditional tracking elements like a Gantt Chart, then this could be the simple communication tool you need to house everyone's notes and documents under one roof. However, if you need a task based plan that can export into Excel or something similar to show the dates and deadlines of all tasks, along with a timeline or charts, this may not be for you.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

I was attempting to find a software solution that would allow project owners, sponsors and support staff to easily share project status, however, I realized that Bascamp was more of a communication tool than a tracking tool. I was not able to find much benefit in this product and had to abandon it since I had to use other project management tools for tracking and follow-up in addition to Basecamp, which in reality added a step for me to go in and check for updates and then manually update my project plan tracking documents.
