Been a Basecamp user for more than 10 years. Our company has embraced this product to manage many of our consulting projects. We manage a few 100 projects in this system at any one time and regularly archive projects as they close down. We've found it to be a great resource that provides all the basic tools need to manage a project, including calendars, file posts, message areas, and to do lists.The user interface is relatively intuitive, and takes minimal training for new staff. Our clients enjoy this as a central place to see all their vital project data, and a log of all the message exchanges and file versions that have been shared time. Most of our clients work for government agencies, and they have very limited inbox space via email accounts. Whereas, Basecamp allows for MUCH larger files (up to 2 GB, but big for us is a few 100 MB), so we can confidently post everything we need to on this site and trust that the client time can get access to it. We have chosen to stick with Basecamp Classic, although they have since released version 2 and 3. Those both look like great products. However, many of our public agency clients lag behind with older operating software and browsers, so we are still hanging on.The newer version has much nicer methods for adding people onto a project or message exchange. More flexible, and less need for admins to intervene.
The main advice I would give any organization considering a project management platform is to make sure it will be adopted from the top down. Our company has struggled to maintain the excitement and momentum we had when first implementing because many of our leaders are not using it, therefore causing employees to slack off and move away from using the system. We have been using Redbooth for about a year in our Corporate Support Center. Our Marketing Department mainly uses it to manage creative requests from our nationally dispersed Client Support and Business Development teams. (We were previously using email/sticky notes). Redbooth has been a life-changing tool for our graphic designer. She is able to attach designed documents directly in Redbooth, get feedback, make adjustments, and resend — all without having to access email. In addition, our Client Managers can submit a request (and research the status of their requests) from anywhere. The interface itself is very intuitive. And, similar to Trello, the individual tasks can be very simple (name, owner, due date), or they can get really complex (description, attached documentation, etc.). Where it differs from Trello is that users have the ability to see their own tasks aggregated on the dashboard, rather than having to move project to project to see each one’s associated tasks. Perhaps our favorite feature is the video calling / screen sharing. We have GoToMeeting and use it frequently for meetings with clients, but we have switched many internal meetings over to Redbooth. In addition, for one-on-ones with remote team members, we are able to have a “face to face” meeting over the Internet! Redbooth also offers an iPhone app, but from my experience it is lacking. The app constantly needs “refreshed” to see the most up-to-date tasks, meaning it is not truly real-time.
Basecamp is a solid project management tool that enables team coordination, team to-dos, shared discussions, shared and organized files, and other features. Its visual presentation is reasonably slick and its interface quite intuitive. I used Basecamp for old projects, but did not stay with it as I found its features were not sufficiently helpful for my small team and Use Case. However, I could log onto Basecamp and use the tool without reading the help guide - the interface of Basecamp was self-explanatory. Basecamp has both free and paid tiers, as well as allowing Users to log in for a free trial.

The new Basecamp from 37signals is out, and I’ve been using it for about a month now. It’s an amazing product and, pending some minor tweaksandadditions, poised to become the new standard for project management tools to adhere to. I’ve used the original Basecamp (now renamed to Basecamp Classic) for a long time and I always had mixed feelings about it. It did a lot of things well, but as a whole, it often felt like a drag; keeping Basecamp updated became a task of its own.More about Basecamp
