A cloud-based app that aims to help lawyers establish a better practice, manage their time better, and keep their sanity intact, Clio is a feature-packed law practice management application that covers processes such as document automation, time tracking, bookkeeping, billing, legal accounting, calendar management, note-taking, task management, and matter management.
To ensure your data, records, and documents enjoy bank-grade security protection at all times, data travel between your browser and Clio’s servers are validated by Norton Secured by Symantec and protected by 256-bit SSL (secure socket layer) encryption and two-factor authentication. Clio Connect

Clio Connect is Clio’s online portal where the action actually happens. It enables legal professionals to securely collaborate with clients, co-counsels, and expert witnesses. A better option than email where document versioning isn’t supported, Clio Connect is where resources, such as bills and documents, are shared. It employs the same security settings as your Clio account, keeping your data safe and free from unauthorized access.
A bill or document can be shared via the recipient’s contact card in Clio Connect or the main document tab. As long as you ticked the appropriate checkbox, recipients receive an automated email alert prompting them to view the source. If they haven’t yet created a Clio Connect account, they’ll be asked to sign up.
With Clio Connect, you can assign tasks to colleagues and invite people to calendar events. You can also ask clients to sign a contract, send you a document, or view relevant documentation.
And then, there’s the client portal. It used to be that when people sought legal services, they handed over the necessary documents to their lawyers. After which, they pretty much had no idea what was going on until an update was issued to them. Invoices were sent through standalone invoicing services, if not through snail mail.
Clio Connect provides your clients with their own login credentials to access a dashboard especially created for them. They see every document, message, and invoice shared with them. Plus, for bills sent via Clio Connect, they can use online payment services like PayPal and LawPay, which readily integrate with the Clio platform, to securely settle their dues.

Document automation

We all know that lawyers are a busy bunch, so when on the lookout for a law practice management software, one of the critical components needing careful consideration is document automation. Document automation, in a nutshell, simplifies the process of assembling a document – a handy feature if you use the same documents over and over (except for the client’s information), such as closing forms, lease contracts, summons, among others.
With Clio, all your legal files are kept in one place, making it quick and easy to organize, search through, and archive your documents. Through templates, documents are automatically created using merge fields from contracts and Clio matters. This means you no longer need to manually find and replace names, addresses, and other pertinent information to create new contracts and other legal documents for your clients.
Clio likewise lets you upload documents and organize them by matter. The documents can come from your computer’s hard drive, an external storage device like a USB disk, or a cloud-based file sharing app like Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, and NetDocuments. Clio saves multiple revision histories and shows you the changes made from one version to another.

Time tracking

Clio has a built-in time-tracking feature that captures the time you spend on each of your cases. This makes sure your billable hours are accurately recorded, and invoice generation can be done in just a few clicks.
To start keeping time, you can either start the timer on your device the moment you start working, or record bulk entries when the work day ends. Clio also lets you directly create time entries on your calendar, tasks, and documents. Even better, Clio Express lets you capture time even when you’re offline.

Calendar management

To keep track of your meetings, appointments, and deadlines, all calendar entries in Clio are tied to individual matters. For heightened collaboration, calendar entries can be shared with co-counsels and meeting reminders with clients.
Clio supports two-way integration with your Google and Outlook calendars, which means all entries made to Clio’s built-in calendar are automatically reflected in your Google or Outlook calendar, and vice versa. To stay on top of court-mandated deadlines, Clio has also partnered with Court Rules (for subscribers of the Clio Elite plan), so you don’t have to manually fill out your court calendar and keep track of important dates.


To simplify your bookkeeping and legal accounting processes, Clio integrates with third-party accounting apps like Xero and QuickBooks Online. The app also integrates with AgileLaw for paperless deposition, Chrometa and Click to File for time tracking, Dropbox, Box, and Google Drive for file sharing and document management, DirectLaw to make your website interactive, DomainSkate for trademark monitoring, FamilyLaw.DivorceHelp123 for family law documents, and Fundbox for advanced invoice payments.
