About Transmit

Transmit is considered one of the best File Transfer Protocol (FTP) clients available on the market. It offers file transfer service that fits your needs. It makes file transfer simple and easy, whether the transfer is to FTP or SFTP, or the cloud, or using WebDAV. Transmit can be quite useful if you maintain a website, do backups, or upload photos.

Transmit 3 was fast, the Transmit Turbo engine in Coda was faster, and finally the Transmit 4 version is everything about Transmit but 25 times faster.

With the new Transmit Disk feature, you can access your favorite bookmarks using the Finder feature, even if Transmit is not running.

Using Transmit4 you can access the following features: drag files to your SFTP server, save a small graphic to your Amazon S3 straight from Photoshop, or roll your iDisk-like backup volume.

  • Transmit is a highly flexible and intuitive FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client that's been designed specifically with Macs in mind.
Transmit is an efficient and elegant FTP client that supports, SFTP, S3 (Amazon. com file hosting) and iDisk/WebDAV protocols that allows you to upload, download, and delete files over the internet.
What first strikes you with Transmit is that it has one of the most Mac-like interfaces available on an FTP client so it looks great. Everything is clearly laid out with folders on the left and transfers on the right.

  • Decent OS X FTP clients are a little thin on the ground, but Transmit is a great piece of software.

  • The conclusion is, if you're searching for a robust, usable and great-looking FTP client, we highly recommend Transmit 4

Mac users are not spoilt for variety of applications. In fact, it's not easy to find the good FTP-client with the rich feature set and stable performance. Transmit is a pleasant exception to the rule. The program stores iDisk and Bonjour connections, stores connection history and contains a folder for bookmarks. Selected connections are synced via MobileMe, so you will have identical connections on all your Macs. There is the unique Places feature. Places are shortcuts to different folders within the FTP connection. This means that you can save bookmark for each remote or local environment. It is possible to synchronize folders using the Transmit. The direction of synchronization may be configured. The user also can add some additional options, such as deleting old documents and determining changed files. Transmit even allows to simulate synchronization in order to ensure that the settings are correct. Transmit provides the ability to mount the FTP connection in the Finder (using MacFUSE). Your connections appear on your desktop, and you can easily move, delete and modify files on the server as if they were in your system. Since MacFUSE is responsible for all of the connections, there is no need to start Transmit. If you activate the `Transmit Disk menu` feature, you can connect and disconnect the drives right from the menu bar of OS X. Transmit also supports Droplets and DockSend features. Droplets are small pre-configured applications designed for the automatic file uploading into the predefined directory on the server. Just move the file to the droplet, and it will be automatically uploaded into the folder you want. DockSend feature allows you quickly upload files to a directory on the server by dragging and dropping these files on the Transmit icon in the Dock.

    Pros :

    • Supports FTP, SFTP, WebDav, Amazon S3 Folder synchronization.
    • Many nice features for quick file uploading.

    Cons :

    • No free version.

Transmit is my preferred FTP client. I find it clear and easy to use. FileZilla just seems a bit cluttered to me. Transmit says they have speedy transfers, but if you ever try downloading an entire website worth of thousands of files, you'll tire of sitting there watching every... single... file... connecting... and... downloading... Whereas like Firefox has some multi-stream downloader which makes downloads seem to go much faster than like in Chrome... I'm not sure if this is just because it's dealing with one file versus many individual files, but I was lead to believe it would be faster than it is, though it doesn't seem any slower than say FileZilla. I also get caught up sometimes with the single search bar, yet two pane view... I try searching, then it's searching the wrong pane. There should be a search bar on either side to make it more intuitive. Currently, you have to click in the pane you want to search, then search. Overall though, I like it.

    Pros :

    • Relatively easy to use.
    • Drag and drop or right click to move files.
    • Affordable.

    Cons :

    • Downloading a website could be a lot faster I feel.
    • Search bars should be on both sides to make it more intuitive to search.
    • Could integrate file comparison software to compare files on a server.
    • Could search beyond the immediate folder; server side search would be awesome.
