  • The gold standard in personal finance applications. While it remains the app to beat, there are issues with various software bugs, reported issues with synchronization, and lack of new features that might make you want to consider other products.

I much prefer Quicken over Inuit’s Mint, because it can handle much more complex financial scenarios and it isn’t read only. Quicken can definitely grow with you as your finances become more complex — Mint on the other hand cannot.Intuit’s Quicken 2014 still remains the gold standard of personal finance applications — locally installed or in the cloud.

  • Quicken Starter Edition is great personal finance software if you're looking for the basics. The free mobile app is convenient. Email and text alerts allow you to monitor changes so that you can quickly intervene if necessary.
If you need to track investments, you can upgrade to Quicken Deluxe.

  • Quicken Deluxe is great for your budgeting and general finances but if you have more complex investing needs (like comparing mutual funds or tracking cost basis) then Quicken Premier will work better for you. Quicken Home & Business might suit you better if you want to track your business as well.

  • Quicken Deluxe 2014 is a financial micromanager's dream. It faces the same remote access problems that all desktop software does, but its ease of use, comprehensive account access and flexible, detailed managing of transactions can't be found elsewhere.

  • New, free mobile apps are the best reason to upgrade to Quicken 2013 from recent versions; otherwise, this capable but pricey finance manager will appeal primarily to new users who prefer to keep their data on the desktop.

    Pros:

    Full-featured personal finance software.
Extra help for sole-proprietor (Schedule C) businesses.
Free iOS and Android apps let you access data from and add transactions to cash, checking and credit card accounts.

    Cons:

Intuit has raised prices for all desktop editions.
Mobile apps don't support investment accounts.
Intuit's sunset policy forces upgrades every three years to maintain online services.

  • Quicken Deluxe 2010 remains a useful, if not exciting, management app equipped with rich balancing and budgeting tools. As for the future of Quicken, Intuit's recent acquisition of flashy online finance manager Mint.com could spell the merging of Mint's online budgeting and reminder features. Mint's exciting visual style could also draw younger users to future versions of Quicken, assuming Intuit goes that route, making future versions of the classic, but dated, money manager truly fresh.
