Toggl does it just what you need for time tracking without flooding the UI with unnecessary features. They seem to hide things and show things at the right time.

Pros :

  • The biggest pro is the fact that I can start a timer from any of the apps or even from within Todoist using the Chrome plugin then stop it from any app.
  • I really love the chrome plugin too.
  • I use that heavily from within todoist and google docs.
  • The reports are great as well.

Cons :

  • Sometimes if I leave a timer running it asks me if I want to discard the idle time. This is really nice feature but doesn't seem to work for me.
  • There doesn't seem to be any reporting across workspaces.
  • Each workspace is a complete silo.

I started using Toggl as a time tracking tool, but then switched to Harvest because it integrates with Asana and is more feature rich. Toggl is a relatively basic tool. It's focus is on adding a task and tracking time. About the same thing you can do with your phone stopwatch app and a spreadsheet, so the value add there is minimal. However you can also organize by projects and track billable time. I paid the $5 Pro fee to add billable time. You can then also have more than 5 team members. Overall I felt it was too basic to suit my needs for a robust time tracking and billable platform, like I've found more so in Harvest.

    Pros :

    • Easy to use: enter a task and click Start to start tracking time.
    • Good for freelancers, lawyers, and consultants who need to track their time.

    Cons :

Gripes I sent to Toggl support include:

    • There's no way to add notes, attachments, supporting info etc. to a task. You can only use tags.
    • There's no way to start timing a task from under a project.
    • You have to go to Timer, then search for it AGAIN, then start it.
    • There's no pause button on the Timer.
    • Only start and stop. (But there is a way to continue the time later, it's not intuitive).
    • There's no way to view all tasks across all projects and sort by priority.
    • Currently, there is no way to view an overall list of your tasks. They are only located under specific projects.
    • There's no way to set the default assignee when creating a task

aymo is the app I’ll be using to run my business starting next week. After searching for an app with a feature wishlist that is pretty much summarized by Paymo’s actual feature list, and an implementation that doesn’t make me hate time-tracking, I’m sold.

The data that Desk Time collects can be incredibly useful to businesses looking for smarter ways to increase productivity and employee output. What we liked: Employees always know when Desk Time is running on their computers People can use Desk Time to evaluate their own productivity when working on specific projects Employees can be grouped by department Managers can see how many employees are absent or slacking at any time What we didn’t like: Desk Time can’t log the time people spend doing work offline

Toggl is a leading time tracking program with an outstanding web interface. It lacks some core functionality of the competing products (auto-stop, auto-start and screenshot monitoring), so if you intend to use it primarily for employees working on PCs, consider Screenshot Monitor that has equally great web interface and gives you more features on the desktop. But if you do not  need screenshot monitoring or have to have Mac, Linux or mobile support,  as of 2014 Toggl is the best choice on the market for time tracking applications.
