  • Does an excellent job of tracking and breaking down billable hours for my work. Subliminally, it also helps to keep me focused and on task because I know that it is being tracked

Pros : I'm able to log in my hours and describe what I have been working on so I don't have to worry about writing it down anywhere. It is extremely easy to use even for nontechnical people they really tried to make the product simple and useful.

Cons : The pricing scheme isn't very flexible for casual freelance developers but for the agency setting it works perfectly.

  • Harvest is one of the best online billing services we have seen for time- and project-based billing. Harvest can help you manage both billable and non-billable expenses across multiple projects. You will have the ability to assign employees and contractors to projects and track their progress against budgeted hours in real time.

  • Harvest seems to me to be a reasonably good solution for businesses which rely heavily on time tracking and want to bundle their time tracking and invoicing solutions. It will be particularly handy for freelancers and small companies which need to track time and expenses based on projects and tasks. While Harvest bills itself as time tracking software, it has reasonably good invoice and estimate support – better than some invoicing software.

In our times when more and more people are working from home, when the team workers could be settled in different continents the time tracker apps is a must. One can use them to track the own working time or to manage the current team projects. Harvest could help in both cases. The free version is oriented to the single user. One can track the working time on four different devices. It is allowed to run two projects simultaneously, and that is usually enough for one person. Harvest has desktop clients for Windows and Mac, widgets for different apps and also iPhone and Android support. However, the most prominent Harvest features can be seen on the premium account. Harvest allows you to monitor the work of the whole team. The different payment rate for different members can be set. Multi-currency is supported, and that is very convenient while working with people from different countries. The service can take into account the expenses, and generate invoices. Expenses can be billable or nonbillable and automatically pulled into invoices if needed. The tasks in the Harvest are used rather indicate the type of work performed, and not to indicate its purpose. As a result, it seems that the software was created mainly for the managers who wish to monitor the work of subordinates and are not particularly keen on details. Harvest has Google apps integration and offers daily data backup. The data is protected with 128-bit security.

    Pros :

    • Automatic reminder of submitting timesheets for the team members.
    • Import from Basecamp project management data is supported.
    • Export data to Excel and Quickbooks.
    • Entering expenses and uploading receipts is possible in many ways, including mobile, Twitter, and the web.

    Cons :

    • The invoicing structure is complicated and needs some time for learning.
    • Tracking time feature could be handier.

Harvest gives you everything you need for project management with an in-house team or a virtual team. The time tracker is built in so you don't have to import from a standalone tracker. Organizing clients and projects is easy. When it comes the time to send an invoice, you get clear reports and the ability to invoice right from the program.

    Pros :

    • Can use in-house or with a virtual team.
    • Includes an integrated time tracker.
    • Easy to learn and use.
    • Billing included.
    • Organized well.

    Cons :

    • You pay per user and the price gets high after your first two team members.
    • No ability to upload documents that I have found.

In the area of project management and time tracking, there are few tools as useful as Harvest. The reason behind this mainly stems from the fact that Harvest is suitable for both personal project management, as well as handling larger teams. Besides being an excellent standalone tool, Harvest can also be used to integrate with other products which deal with project management, such as Asana. Once such example is that Asana can be used to manage projects, their tasks and subtasks. Harvest can then hook up with Asana, and each task can be timed and automatically invoiced through Harvest, based on the amount of time spent. This, therefore, makes Harvest an excellent companion application for project management tools, especially for freelancers. Harvest allows users to keep track of projects and team members, as well as payments, with very detailed reporting and statistics. This is especially important when dealing with many clients, as well as teams working on multiple projects, since good project management is necessary to get big projects done and completed successfully. Harvest is primarily a timesheet application, and this is what it does best. When working on a task, it is possible to start, pause or resume a timer, which runs in the background and calculates the amount of time elapsed. Harvest also allows users to switch between different tasks seamlessly and keep track of everything. Once the desired amount of work has been completed, an invoice can be generated within Harvest based on the hours worked, and automatically reflected within the invoice, and calculated (ultimately producing the final chargeable amount). This is particularly powerful when linked with Asana, which in turn can be used to keep track of projects and tasks in greater detail. Similarly, Harvest can integrate with SalesForce, Quickbooks and other software as a service applications, making invoicing and time tracking completely seamless. Harvest can be accessed through a large multitude of devices, including mobiles through a dedicated mobile app. However, the mobile app is rather limited at the time of writing. When timesheets and invoices are generated, clients can approve or dispute them, as well as pay through a number of different payment methods. Furthermore, before embarking on a project, Harvest can also be used to generate quotations, which can later on be turned into invoices. One may, therefore, conclude that Harvest is an excellent tool to use throughout the whole lifecycle of a project.

    Pros :

    • Advanced reporting on projects and team members.
    • Ability to create invoices with custom time values.
    • Invoices are very professional. - SSL encryption is standard on invoices.
    • Supports multiple currencies.
    • Supports custom tax calculations.
    • Integrates with SalesForce, Quickbooks and Asana.
    • Timesheets can be approved or disputed.
    • Mobile app and desktop widget make it very easy to track tasks.
    • Estimates / Quotations can also be created.
    • Different payment methods available in invoices, including PayPal.
    • Ability to stop, pause and start timers for different tasks.

    Cons :

    • Mobile application is limited.

Harvest is a useful application for time & expense tracking, reporting and invoicing. It is also a project management tool since each activity can be tracked by customer and project. This allows the project manager to monitor how time is being used. Being a web-based application, Harvest is very light on system resources and bandwidth – it doesn’t have a noticeable effect on either. Its cloud-based platforms make it very adequate for teams working across large distances. Furthermore, there is a smartphone app that allows tracking activities which are not carried out in front of a computer such as meeting with a customer, visiting a project, carrying out project purchases, etc. Perhaps the only notable limitation of Harvest is that it doesn’t include payment processing options. This means that, once a time report is created, a third-party solution must be used for the actual billing process. A minor drawback is that it tracks time on the background without any type of notification regarding status – you must make sure that the timer doesn’t stay on by accident after you finish a task, and if your internet connection is limited it is also recommendable to check the interface every once in a while to verify that it is tracking correctly.

    Pros :

    • Extremely lightweight, being a web-based application. It works adequately even with limited bandwidth.
    • Intuitive, easy to use, and reports can be set up in a matter of minutes.
    • Time is tracked by project and by customer, which allows reports to display exactly how time is being allocated.
    • The smartphone app allows tracking activities when you don’t have access to a computer.

    Cons :

    • There are no built-in payment processing options, you must rely on a third party solution to bill customers.
    • Harvest can’t provide you with notifications of any type unless the web interface is open and visible on the screen. You must have the discipline to manage the timer correctly and check the web app every once in a while.

Harvest has done the job for me for at least 5 years. I absolutely love the product. Great app as well on both iOS and Android.

    Pros :

    • Easy to use.
    • Employees love it.
    • Great Reporting. Great for Invoicing.

    Cons :

No cons honestly... obviously would be nicer if it were cheaper, but is better than all other products on the market that do the same thing and priced about the same as them.

I use Harvest on a daily basis because of it's integration with Asana. It took some getting used to and several emails with support to learn how it works, but now that I know all the quirks, I'm happy with it and a power user.

    Pros :

    • It can pull in details of tasks from Asana for detailed billing.
    • I can assign team members to create projects and add time tracking to take that off my mind.
    • It can send out automated reminders for invoices (I send out daily reminders).
    • You can customize the email messages and reminders.
    • Integrates with Fundbox to get past due invoices paid from Fundbox rather than waiting on slow clients.

    Cons :

    • As first, it was hard to figure out how to pull in the task details into invoices, it's under Detailed Line Items.
    • What Asana considers Tasks, Harvest considers Tasks to be what we'd consider Categories (like Programming, Design, etc). Very confusing. Detailed Line Items in Harvest pull in the "Task" info from Harvest. Would be nice if Harvest corrected their terminology.
