My overall impression of Slacker Radio is great. In the era of digital music streaming, Slacker Radio really delivers. And here is why: it is an online music radio station that plays a variety of artists that are similar enough to be in the same genre, without continuing to repeat the same artists. It can be compared to Pandora, only the music selection is more diverse. I have been using Slacker Radio as background music while working, and I tend to always find myself checking to see which artist or song is playing, because the music is fairly diverse. And I really like that! I have listened to online streaming services before, but what ends up happening is hearing the same artists, same songs, and it does not resemble an actual radio station. Slacker Radio, however, proves to be different, and it is worth listening to.

Pros :

  • The pros of Slacker Radio include a free option that allows the listener to select an artist, and then listen to music that is similar to that artist. Fortunately, there is plenty of diversity here.
  • The app is also very good, in that there are few ads for the free version, yet plenty of good songs from great artists.
  • From my experience, the ads are shown when listeners skip through songs, but other than that, the music continues to play. And that is great! Fewer ads, and more songs!
  • A real pro is the amount of diversity between artists and songs.
  • I have abandoned other music apps because it seems like the music is on “repeat,” whereas Slacker Radio has greater diversity.
  • I appreciate that while I am listening to music. No one likes to hear the same old songs on a radio station.

Cons :

  • The only con I can think of is that I don't have any control of the song play from my keyboard when I am listening to Slacker Radio on my laptop, as I do with the downloaded version of Spotify. I have to pause, skip, etc., on the open window with Slacker Radio. Really, that is a first-world con. Slacker Radio delivers!

In spite of the fact that Rhapsody is a veteran Internet music provider, they realize they are up against some heavy competition. It is obvious they are really pushing for their MP3 store to take off and start competing with contenders like iTunes; unfortunately, it seems services like Napster and Amazon MP3 are beating them to the punch. However, if you are used to using Rhapsody and comfortable with their services, it is a great place to start your music hunt.

If you’re strictly looking for an Internet radio service, Slacker Radio is probably the best on the market today. Plus, it is one of the few that concentrates on providing news and sports channels too. Not available internationally though.
