  • PhotoXpress is the first project to make use of Fotolia’s Free Photos API which is still in active development. They’re receiving a lot of feedback and making constant changes. If PhotoXpress proves successful, we can expect to see Fotolia’s free photos becoming available at a variety of sources.

  • It would be a bit of an exaggeration to call this site a watershed for microstock, but I'm certain a lot of people in the industry are watching this. For more of my thoughts on free stock images read my post "free microstock photos". PhotoXpress is a good example of a site attracting visitors with a collection of some 600k free images and then offering a couple of options to convert these visitors into paying customers i.e. either a very low cost subscription to obtain more images or selling them up to a full priced subscription similar to that offered at fotolia itself.

  • PhotoXpress is a high quality, royalty-free image bank that offers free digital images and illustrations to creative professionals. Our trusted network of photographers and partners continue to build the PhotoXpress image bank each and every day. Images from our collection may be used in brochures, advertisements, magazines, websites, etc. It will be beneficial to industry hands and regular people that need to use pictures for their professional and personal works.

    I have used Fotolia for some years, because, as a graphic designer, I need it for some project on advertising. Fotolia, in fact, is an international images database, and you can have access to a lot of images, as well as vector, graphics and video clips. All that can be used to create your projects, from posters, brochures, and presentations.

    The system is very simple, as you can see. From the home page, you can search the contents you interested too, among millions of images and graphics. By scrolling through the results, then you choose the image that you like, and you can download it with the watermark, to be sure it's fine for your project. Once you're convinced of this purchase, you can download the image itself on the size you want, and you're done!

    Pros :

    • Very affordable prices, both for individual images, both for monthly subscriptions.
    • Being owned by Adobe, all contents are of high quality: it is, in fact, a large community of artists, designers, and photographers who can create their collections and share them with users.
    • You can choose various packages depending on what you need: monthly package, daily package, etc.andnbsp;
    • Once you buy all the images, you can download them whenever you want so that you can use them on different computer or devices.
    • Sometimes you can also download images free of charge in a constantly updated section.andnbsp;

    Cons :

    I have used this service for many years now, and I have to say that I have always found it very good. But I would like to say two small notes:

    • I think they could offer also music files, like jingles for advertising. I don't know exactly how it works for copyrights, but this could be just an idea!
    • I often found a lot of low-quality images, so I hope that we can make a big selection so that the service can only contain professional content.

    Since the Fotolia was acquired by Adobe, its popularity has increased significantly. This is not surprising because all users of the Adobe programs have a good choice of stock pictures directly from the applications. At Fotolia, it is possible to buy images by one or using subscription. Here you need to buy credits that then use for pictures and videos purchase. The organization may have a corporate account. It has additional possibilities, such as dividing the points and limiting the possibility of downloading, if necessary. The price depends not only on size but also on the license. For a photo with a standard license the user should pay from 1 to 80 $; enhanced license will cost up to 200 $. The acquisition of exclusive rights will cost from $100 up to $2000. A number of photographer's royalties on this photo stock depends on two factors – your exclusivity (if you send only here, you will get more) and the rank of the author. If the image was bought for the points, the author receives from 20 to 63% of the file value. If the image was bought by the subscription, the author receives 20 to 25% of the nominal subscription value. The ranking system is simple: the more you sell, the higher you rank is. But if your portfolio isn't very large, you will unlikely jump to the next level. It was noticed that the sales at Fotolia depend on the new uploads. If you don't upload the new images, you don't have many sales with the existing ones. So it is important to upload the new photos constantly to promote the entire portfolio for the clients.

    Pros :

    • Doesn't have an entry exam.
    • Adobe products integration.
    • It is possible to withdraw money from $50.

    Cons :

    • Rejection rate is quite high.
    • The rejection criteria isn't always clear.

    Of course when you own a website you need pretty, high-quality and related pictures everyday. The best part is one does not have to go here and there to find relative pictures, there are categories namely. Lifestyle, business, people, drinks, animals, food, buildings, environment, state of mind, graphic resources, hobbies, travel, science etc. which are further classified too. The collection of image is very huge. And it is very simple to use just click the cart option add it to his cart and we can easily pay through PayPal. Easy, right? Not only does it offer images but videos too.

    Pros :

    • 23 million+ pieces of media is one of the largest libraries among the standard providers.
    • A variety of subscription and credit purchase options.
    • Image, video, illustration and vector images.
    • Easy to navigate website.
    • User submissions are accepted.
    • User-friendly.

    Cons :

    • Audio files are not offered.

    As a head of marketing, I used Fotolia a lot whenever we could not use pictures from our partners or staff. We regularly bought pictures for our websites and sometimes for our newsletters and special campaigns, and it was usually easy to find good ones for our industry (language travel), especially destination pictures. Credits are very easy to use, and you can always go back to download again the pictures you already bought. Variety is good as long as you are looking for popular themes. I believe it is one of the largest image banks, at least in Europe. We were also using other image banks as we could not always find what we were looking for on Fotolia.

    Pros :

    I like the possibility of downloading again the pictures you already bought, as you do not always take the time to save it somewhere before you edit it. The option to download a sample with a watermark is essential to make sure the target format will work out before purchasing. Credits are simple to use and buy (packs or subscriptions), and the price is decent. The variety of pictures is quite good for popular themes (for example landscapes and anything related to travel), and images are properly indexed, which makes it easy to find them by keyword. There is a section with some free pictures which are regularly updated.

    Cons :

    Variety could be improved for less popular search terms. Lots of pictures really look "fake" and you need to spend some time to find one that looks more authentic. We were using at least 2 other image banks, as we could not always find what we wanted on Fotolia. I think it is useful for a website, but for blogs or social media there are other sources which are cheaper or even free.
