Solidworks is a parametric software to create technical 3D models. It has a sketching tool, a 3D tool and different tools to apply test on your model (such as thermic, physique, electrical...). It has an intuitive interface, and there is a big active community on the internet if you need to find help about some features.

Solidworks is mainly made for professional to develop 3D model at the end of their developing stage. It is not a 3D modeller with the purpose of shape searching.

    Pros :

    • Solidworks is very accurate, you can work with a very tight tolerance. You can rapidly make pieces and assemble them. The interface speak by itself and the arborescent history model is a pleasure to use and you will never be lost in what you already achieved.
    • After conceiving your piece, you can directly do renders of you model inside the same viewport, which makes you save a good amount of time.
    • There is also a very practical tool allowing you to create a blueprint with different isometric views, and the nomenclature linked to it. Another main point is its good implementation in the industry and support for exporting files. It allows you to have a tool with which you can work with others.

    Cons :

    • Even if the sketching and modelling tool are easy to use, the analysis tools are quite difficult to understand and to manage.
    • Also, there is no incorporated prototyping tool. The plugin exists but it is not built in which now a day seem essential with the growing up of these technologies.
    • Another annoying point is that it is very heavy, you need a powerful computer. And even with one powerful, it crashes regularly when your model becomes too heavy.
    • And finally about surfacing modelisation, Solidworks is difficult to manage and you will spend hours making your surfaces tangents. However, this point tends to become better since the last version, even if it is still not perfect.

SolidWorks 3D CAD software is a comprehensive solution for product development, design, and production of technical documentation. It represents the basis for a further use of the model for the calculation of cost, production technology, calculations, and simulations.

Solidworks contains working environment and tools to create all sorts of parts, from the easiest in part design to most complex in advanced surfacing. For every part you can select specific material, for everything you do you can calculate stress and strain on the components and parts, you can analysis tolerance and measuring chains. You can use existing documentation from AutoCAD software and DWG formats, you can define interactive and photo-realistic images and movies of your products before they are made for the purpose of the catalog, internet presentations, and trade shows. SolidWorks 3D CAD package allows you to design a complete product and create high-quality documentation output, with reduced risk of making mistakes.

The entire chain of communication in your company relating to your products is improved because the understanding of 3D documentation is easy to non-technical persons. In the production people will have a better view of parts to be made, mounted, welded and to perform control over them.

The image of the company in its relations with domestic and foreign buyers can also be corrected if the communication is done through the professional documentation in 3 dimensions.

    Pros :

    • This software, like Catia, is essential for mechanical engineer, it speeds up work a lot, it reduces the likelihood of errors.
    • Before SolidWorks software, everything was done manually with high probability of errors and with a lot of working hours.
    • This software is helping you to reduce time, errors, costs and improves efficiency.

    Cons :

    • I wouldn't call it a con but working in this type of software requires constant learning, help file seems to be out of order, and it is very frustrating when you need several hours to read help if you have a problem with something you currently work.

Solidworks is a great software for 3D. You draw all your sketches and create shapes from it. It is very easy to learn. You just have to understand how the software works. The icons for the tools are well made and easy to understand so you can rapidly do basic shapes. It is very precise, sometimes even too much. But it is very good for 3D printing. It is a great software for design, and you can give directly to engineers. You have a lot of different simulations possible with integrated tools: animations, weight simulations, basic renders...

On the left of the screen, you have your timeline of the tools you used so you can click and drag to go back and modify something. So if you made a mistake and you entered all the values needed to have a good 3D, you just have to modify a value, and all your 3D will follow and be perfect. You won't have to change all of the values

    Pros :

    • With the tools integrated you can simulate the weight or have the volume of your object with the correct material. It is perfect for engineers. The interface is quite clear and easy to understand. The soft doesn't crash, or it is very rare.
    • You can export in a lot of different extensions, and it is very nice for using your CAD in another software.

      Cons :

      • Sometimes it is so precise that you can do what you want, you have to enter a size. You can't do "freestyle" sometime.
      • Solidworks is not made for renders, the integrated tool for it, is Photoview 360 is not made at all for beautiful renders.
      • You have to use another software if you want something good at the end.
      • Freeform are not that easy to make, the software is not easy to use for organic or natural shapes. As you star from flat sketches is is more complicated. You can use 3D sketches but is is not easy and natural to use it, or it takes time to handle it.
