  • New Relic APM is a good tool to add to your developer toolbox.

New Relic APM Use Cases and Deployment ScopeWe use it to see why our websites might be performing slowly for certain tasks. We use APM+ to find the tasks that are slow, and what is causing their performance problems. We also use it to find out what might be wrong when problems pop up. It also is a good way to track performance from one release to the next.

Pros : Finding weak points in our websitesHelping us debug problems when they show up.Tracking performance over time.

Cons : It doesn't always show us the exact cause of what is happening, sometimes there are false positives.Would be nice if there was a GoLang integrationPrice is expensive.

New Relic's integration with Heroku and great visualisation and reporting of key specs made

New Relic APM Use Cases and Deployment ScopeWe used New Relic to monitor a couple of web apps built with Heroku. We used it's availability monitoring feature, as well as the Apdex graphing for load testing.

Pros : Availability MonitoringApdex (Application Performance Index) score

Cons : Web interface can be a little klunkySome features require a higher subscription package ($$)

New Relic helps you keep a critical online service up and running.

New Relic APM Use Cases and Deployment ScopeI'm using New Relic in a Django project, a site with high traffic and a subscription service, that's why it is important for us to have a solid monitoring system for our clients. In this particular case we are using New Relic to be sure that our site remains fast, reliable, and lets us react quickly to any major or minor error. New Relic also helps us monitoring the application to know if every part in the stack is working properly.

Pros : Show detailed information about the performance of code functions and SQL queries.Monitor the CPU, memory, and I/O usage of a Linux server.Manage and send alerts about critical issues in your project.

Cons : The web dashboard frontend is sometimes slow.Pricing model is too big business oriented, it is expensive for startups.

  • Insights is really good

We were using Crashlytics/Fabric before we switched to New Relic. Crashlytics is better at reporting the crashes I believe. Mainly because they can include custom data. Like id's etc. But the Insights part of New Relic is really good and for us it ads value.

Pros : Insight is really good and easy to use. And it's really good that 7days retention is now part of normal tier.

Cons : Not getting custom attributes on crash reports. Cumbersome to compare data from different versions in mobile part. But it can be done in Insights.

    Amazing service

I've only used the trial so far but it has been great. I'm using Azure worker roles and it has been good to work with so far.

Pros : - Great customer support - Powerful customization of metrics

Cons : - Azure support for the author of the apps is a bit lacking

    a must have tool

The key to monitoring the app and then rapidly determining the cause of a potential issue is seeing the transaction context. That's the power of having this tool in place.

  • New Relic for JVM Monitoring and Insight

    What do you like best?

The best features of New Relic is the ease of setup and usage. Once you add an agent directory to your server, for the JVM you just add one line to call the newrelic agent.

You can easily drill down through Java calls and stack traces.

The tools has a very clean interface and is easy to use for basic tasks.

    What do you dislike?

You have to install something on every server and sometimes it slows down performance. It also does not always autorecognize calls to things like SQS and data stores. Some other products do a better job of this

Sometimes the SaaS page is not as fast as you would like.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would recommend evaluating appdynamics and some home grown ones like stagemonitor and nagios first.

Also determine if you need to use tools like visual JVM or jstat to examine your Java issues before you release to a server.

You also need something like ELK to aggregate, search, monitor and display logs and stack traces.

New Relic used with other tools like PagerDuty, ELK, nagios, ganglia and others can make for a good stack for monitoring issues and what's coming. Also examine the tools from Netflix OSS in this area.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

We are trying to find issues before they crash servers and before they become major issues.

So far we have been able to spot some items quickly. We also use this for reports on our front-end product and uptime to investors and to our C level executives.
