Hostgator Review by Cloudswave

Every company needs a website. Those that try to make it in the digital age without an online presence aren’t going to make it for much longer and are probably struggling pretty badly at the moment. Getting that all important website starts with finding a qualified company to host this property. While there are more options than ever before for web hosting, HostGator has been one of the best for over 10 years now.

Why You Need Hosting

For those who may not be familiar with how websites work, it’s worth quickly covering what hosting companies like HostGator do exactly. If you think of your website as an actual house, it makes it a lot easier. In that respect, hosting companies own the land beneath it. You pay property taxes to keep the land under your home just like you pay a hosting company for the digital real estate your site depends on.

Unlike with a home, you can choose whom you’ll pay this tax to when it comes to your website. You could even try hosting your own site except that doing so would take resources and knowledge most of us aren’t privy to.

All a hosting company does, at the end of the day, is provide you with a computer that has the necessary memory to store all of your website’s information. From the background you’ve chosen for each page to your company’s logo to the content you create, all of this has to be stored. The computers hosting companies use must stay active 24/7/365. Any time the server—this is the computer we’re talking about—goes offline, so do the sites it’s responsible for.

99% Uptime Guaranteed

Alright, now that we have that important foundation established, you’ll have an easier time understanding why HostGator is such a great service. When we talk about your site remaining online, we’re talking about “uptime.”

Well, HostGator guarantees that your site will remain “up” 99% of the time. Now, does that mean that 1% of the day, your site will be offline? No, thankfully, you don’t have to worry that for almost 14.5 minutes a day your site will be inaccessible.

It’s just that it would be impossible to guarantee 100% uptime. No hosting company does. However, if 1% of HostGator’s four million clients were losing their site for nearly 15 minutes a day, you’d be hearing about it.

Nowadays, every hosting company should be able to promise 99% uptime. Technology is just too advanced for you to have to settle for anything less.

Easy Sign-Up

If you’ve been trying to get by without a website for your company, you really don’t want to sit around and wait much longer. Your competitors are already enjoying a ton of unchallenged competition without your online presence. Fortunately, HostGator couldn’t make it simpler to sign up and get going with a domain.

Even better is that you’ll have a pretty simple time backing out of your deal if you should choose. Again, you absolutely need a website these days, but if something comes up, you are given 45 days to walk away from your domain and not pay a penny.

Templates Galore

A lot of people grasp the above section where we talked about how hosting functions. They can make sense of that so they go ahead and buy a domain through a hosting company and then they’re stuck. They don’t know what to do because the next step is actually building a website.

If you’re like most of us, much like with building a home, you simply don’t know how. This is where HostGator found a unique way to help its customers. Not knowing how to build a website is no longer a problem.

When you sign up with the hosting company, you’ll have access to over 4,500 website templates. No matter what you envision for your business, there’s a template that will make it possible. Chances are that you’ll realize many of your favorite sites probably used one of them to accomplish their look.

Best of all, these templates are all free. You really can get your site up and running in a matter of minutes with no experience when you use HostGator.

Technical Support Around the Clock

Still, even with how user-friendly it is to create an account with HostGator, register a domain and build a site, you’ll probably have a question or two. While the company itself has plenty of online resources right on their site, you’ll also have customer support available 24/7/365.

No matter what, most website owners have some kind of issue at some point. You might struggle to upload something or get a complaint from a user. While these problems may not be the end of the world, it’s still nice to know that you don’t have to go about figuring them out on your own. Qualified professionals are just a call away.

Reseller Services Available

For those who are a bit more tech-savvy or perhaps after you’ve had your own site hosted for a while, reselling is an excellent way to make a nice side income.

Reselling refers to the practice of buying a greater amount of hosting than you need and then charging others for the amount you don’t use. Again, to use our real estate analogy, it would be like buying a four-unit building, living in one and renting out the other three.

There are a couple of reasons to do this. For one, if you’re willing to play landlord, those you provide hosting to will most likely cover your own tab. This is a smart way for small businesses to pad their budget.

Many people cover their own hosting bills this way, but then continue to expand their operation. Like we mentioned above, playing middleman to other people’s hosting like this could net you a good chunk of change with very little overhead. It’s not like you have to actually set up or otherwise manage the actual servers. That’s HostGator’s job.

There’s no getting around it. If you want a professional site, you need professional hosting. Since 2002, HostGator has provided this service to millions of happy customers all over the planet.

  • HostGator is the best simple shared hosting provider who helps you to run your business smoothly. I am using Hostgator web hosting for more than two years for all my websites. I recommend what I use.

  • HostGator makes it easy and affordable to craft attractive, functional websites, but the interface requires more digging than most to find the options you need.

  • Hostgator is one of the best shared hosting company. Baby plan is my favorite here as it let you host multiple Website.

I have been using Hostgator for about 4 years now. Very happy with the service overall. You certainly are not getting the hand-holding experience that you would get with setup from other vendors like Rackspace, but you are also not paying $100 per month either. I think I am on a plan that is less than $10 per month, and I have 5 websites running currently on that one hosting account.

    Pros :

    • If you are comfortable using online tools to set up hosting, configuring DNS, setting up email, etc, then you will like Hostgator.
    • They offer a ton of tools via their cpanel type interface.
    • I am by no means an expert when it comes to their interface, but I have been able to stumble around and find what I need over time.
    • I have never, as far as I know, ever experienced an outage of my website hosting.
    • Overall, thier service was the very best of all of the low budget hosting services out there.
    • Their online chat help is nice to have, but you do have to wait sometimes for 15-20 minutes before anyone responds to your chat, but at least they actually have an online timer that shows your "estimated wait time" before someone can take over and respond to your chat question.

    Cons :

    • They have online self-help resources that are fairly good, but it was not the most intuitive interface I've ever used.
    • Setting up websites, email, databases, CRON JOBs, etc, are all doable, and after you figure it out the first time, like where to find each feature and option in the interface, then you should be fairly good to do it over and over.
    • Like anything, it takes some time to get to know the software. Mainly it was hard to navigate because they offer so many options, so if you like a lot of options and flexibility to do what you want, then they have a great service.
    • I was not terribly impressed with their email service, as it offered basically zero ability to configure SPAM filtering.
    • I ended up moving my email service over to Gmail to host it for me using their business services, much much better, with great SPAM filtering.

I used HostGator's reseller option for several years and was very happy with the service in general right up to the end where our server started crashing ALL the time and would be down for days.

    Pros :

    • As a web developer, I was pressured by my clients to offer hosting as well so they could have everything in one place.
    • I finally relented and signed up for HostGator's reseller plan after doing weeks of research.
    • It was easy to set up and easy to use.
    • Their support was always very prompt and I didn't have any issues for years.

    Cons :

    • I'm not sure what happened exactly, but we started having all kinds of downtime on the site. To the point that HostGator was even crediting my account because they were violating their own uptime guarantee. I didn't care about the money so much as my clients and my reputation.
    • When their server would crash - I'd get flooded with phone calls from 50 pissed off customers and it would be a day or two in some cases before it would come back up.
    • We eventually moved to GreenGeeks and haven't looked back.

HostGator offers a many web hosting and domain registration services, and does a great job. I have used their services many times, both for registering domains as well as web hosting. They compete very well with other web hosts, and I have found them to be much better than GoDaddy in a number of categories, mainly customer support and latency. They are the best web host I have used so far.

    Pros :

    • One of the biggest advantages is that HostGator have online live chat, while some other competitors (such as GoDaddy) do not. Issues arise when hosting websites and domain name registration, so it is nice knowing that help is easily accessible.
    • Good latency overall.
    • Easy domain registration process.
    • Good stability.
    • High availability.
    • I have never had any website being unavailable due to issues on HostGator's end.

    Cons :

    • Confusing navigation throughout the website.
    • Specific links are used to take you to the CMS sections and file browsers of your websites, while a separate portal is used for billing. Takes a while to get used to.
    • Long waiting time for live chat, on average.
    • It is not straightforward to pay for domains through PayPal.
    • When I had tried to do so, customer support asked me to send a manual invoice through PayPal.

I've used HostGator for years. I pay a low monthly fee and have the ability to add an unlimited number of sites on my server, which is fantastic.

    Pros :

    • Low monthly fee.
    • Unlimited websites (on the Baby Plan).
    • Billing is easy and takes PayPal or CC.

    Cons :

    • Support tickets can take days on average to get a response.
    • IMs can often average a 30-minute wait.

FAQs for Hostgator

If you’re planning on starting a website, you’ll need hosting service. While it makes sense to join the four million other people who have entrusted HostGator with this job, you may have some questions first. This FAQ should answer most of them.

How Much Is HostGator?

One of the many things HostGator is known for is affordability. They’re constantly running sales, offering as much as 20% off. However, there’s no way to guarantee a price. Hosting starts at just $3.96 a month, but the actual price will depend on what you want your domain to be and what other services you need. If you want WordPress, VPS or Dedicated Hosting, you’ll be paying more. Dedicated Hosting, the most expensive kind, starts at $105 a month.

Do I Have to Make My Own Site?

You don’t have to make your own site. Once you get your hosting squared away, you could hire a website designer to do this for you. That being said, you could also use one of the 4,500 templates HostGator provides its customers for free and design your own. With all the customization options they offer, you could use the exact same template as a customer and end up with something quite different.
HostGator also uses a tool they call QuickInstall and has a partnership with a company called Weebly, both of which make building a website about as easy as clicking, dragging and dropping.

What if I Want to Switch to HostGator from Another Hosting Service?

In the past, switching to a new host has been notoriously difficult. While you should definitely back up all of your website’s data before making the move, HostGator also has a migrations team available to help you with the process. They can even transfer your domain registration so you have complete control over your website.
