BigCommerce Review by Cloudswave

Every company should have a website.

The problem is actually building that website and ensuring it meets your expectations. You could spend a lot of money hiring a web designer to handle the heavy lifting, but then you’ll probably also need help to run it in the future.
Something like WordPress makes it easy for anyone to build a site, but if you have big ambitions for your eCommerce solution, you’ll definitely be lacking in functionality.

Fortunately, there’s BigCommerce.

This software’s name really says it all. If you want an eCommerce site, minus the headache and don’t want to sacrifice revenues, join countless companies around the world that have used BigCommerce to do the same.
Be sure to read this piece all the way to the end, because Cloudswave has a BigCommerce coupon that we’re sure you’ll be interested in.

Create Your Site

No two eCommerce sites should really be the same. Even if, your company and the other offers the same exact products or services, you probably have some ideas about how to differentiate yourself from the competition, right
Unlike so many other solutions out there, BigCommerce isn’t a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all application. You’ll find that with a lot of other products, you can customize the text on a template and little else. With BigCommerce, you can create a store, you’ll be proud to stand by.

Nail the Storefront

Whether we’re talking about the real world or the digital realm, it goes without saying that businesses should do everything they can to make the best possible storefront. First impressions are always vital to beginning a relationship, after all.
As we covered above, BigCommerce is all about customization, so you can rest assured there are all kinds of themes available for creating a beautiful storefront. Even after applying a theme, though, you have a number of options for making your website’s interface stand out from all the rest. No one, not even those in your industry using BigCommerce, will have a site that looks like yours.
This company is so dedicated to helping you get a custom look that matches the one you have in your head, they’ll even provide you with a list of eCommerce designers you can choose from for extra help at an affordable price.

Create Compelling Content

Even though your store may look plenty flashy, if customers can’t get the information they want about your company and its product line, expect most of them to head elsewhere.
While BigCommerce won’t supply the content (you probably want to handle that in-house anyway), what the company does do is give you all the space to supply compelling copy.
From an About Us page to banners to contact forms and anything else you may want, your eCommerce site will have no problem communicating important information to your market with this platform. You also remain in control of it this way as well, so you can make changes to your content whenever you please.

Manage Your Inventory

No matter what line of work you’re in, your company is going to have an inventory that continually needs to be updated. Maybe you just have to change a price or two (you could be running a sale) or you have a product that’s no longer for sale.
Whatever the case, BigCommerce makes this little more than a point-and-click procedure. You’ll actually feel bad for those competitors who still have to call up their web developer to manually make these changes for them. That comes at a price too.
BigCommerce allows you to add high-resolution images of your products, manipulate the pricing, upload videos, create features and options, and so much more. You can add categories as well, so customers will have an easier time finding exactly what they’re looking for on your site. Best of all, it only takes a matter of seconds. When the market shifts, you want to react and this platform will allow you to do so.

Accept Payments

Obviously, none of this would matter much if, at the end of the day, your company wasn’t making money. In order to do this, your eCommerce site needs to support a payment gateway like PayPal.
This definitely isn’t a problem with BigCommerce. Aside from PayPal, it also supports popular options like Square, Stripe and many others. These gateways come pre-integrated, so you don’t have to worry about lag time existing between the moment your site is ready and the time you can start profiting from it.
Why choose just one gateway though? Even though PayPal has been king for over a decade, you may find your market is becoming more diverse with their preferences. BigCommerce allows you to choose a number of gateways and make them all available for your customers to choose from.

Take Control of Shipping

After the sale is over and you have accepted your customer’s payment, there’s still the matter of actually shipping the product out. This is often a contentious part of the sales funnel for all involved.
Your customers need to know how much their product will actually cost once shipping is added in. Your company doesn’t want to lose customers with this kind of surprise after the sale is over and they also have to worry about the product actually showing up (something you could get blamed for, despite it not being your fault).
Using BigCommerce means you can customize the entire shipping process from your company’s perspective. With just a few clicks, you’ll tell the software where your shipping center is located, the locations your company will ship to and the methods you’ll use for different areas. The layout for this option is set up so that you can quickly get a view of the entire arrangement and make changes within seconds.
Your customers will love the fact that they can get updated rates to reflect real-time prices from USPS, UPS, FedEx, Royal Mail, Australia Post, Canada Post, Intershipper and more. These quotes can also be adjusted to add on any rates unique to your company as well.
Notice you’re losing customers when it comes to shipping expenses? Create promotions to help lower the price and entice more visitors to go through with the purchase.
If your company could benefit from printing labels, you can do so with BigCommerce. Print shipping labels from the software’s control panel through an Endicia account at no extra charge. This is a real lifesaver for small businesses that would otherwise require trip after trip to the post office and all the delays that go right along with it.

Harness the Power of Drop-shipping and Fulfillment

This software was designed to work seamlessly with popular order processing and fulfillment platforms like Doba, Ordoro and Shipwire. Once you have this connection setup, you can begin automating a large swath of your ecommerce solution, freeing up your people for more important tasks and saving you money.

Get a Handle on Taxes

Taxes can be a real burden to deal with it. They’re not exactly easy to apply, yet you’ll be in a lot of trouble if your company drops the ball here. It only gets more difficult for those companies with international locations and/or customers.
The team behind BigCommerce understands this, which is why their platform allows you to automate the taxes for any states within the U.S. National and regional taxes can be accommodated for other countries as well. You can apply product-based and customer-based tax rules too, including wholesale transactions. If you like, you can also exclude taxes on products.

Show Multiple Currencies

If you have an international market, it only makes sense that you’d have visitors from around the globe on your eCommerce site. You could stand to lose a lot of them, though, if your online store doesn’t support multiple currencies from all over the world.
With the help of BigCommerce, you don’t have to handle the exchange rates yourself. Instead, the software will handle this on your behalf. Just pick the countries you want to service and BigCommerce will do the rest.

Perfect for Businesses of Any Size

All these features may make it seem as though BigCommerce is a platform that really only makes sense for big companies. After all, “big” is right in its name. It’s certainly true that BigCommerce has a number of large clients out there. Some make tens of millions of dollars every year.
Others, though, only bring in a few hundred. With all kinds of industries represented by companies across 65 different countries, you can bet there are at least a few that are a lot like yours.
The point is that BigCommerce isn’t just for huge enterprises. In fact, a small business could probably enjoy some very sizable benefits by bringing in the help of this platform. It could be the asset necessary to go up against much larger competitors.

Get Noticed

Although these are some great features so far, they won’t do you any good if customers can’t find your site. That’s why BigCommerce isn’t just about converting visitors into consumers. This platform is also about catching the market’s attention in the first place, so you have plenty of visitors to sell to.
As you’d probably expect, this means getting help with keywords, meta tags, custom URLs, SEO-friendly themes and links that search engines love. There are also all kinds of promotions and coupons to create a sense of urgency in your visitors and gratitude when they realize some great savings. Whether you prefer coupon codes, gift certificates or offers of free shipping, Big Commerce can help with all this and more.
Despite what many think, email marketing is still alive and well. If it wasn’t, software like MailChimp wouldn’t be so popular all over the world. Those who are already using MailChimp, include email or Constant Contact will love the fact that these powerful tools can be synced with BigCommerce.
This software’s no slouch when it comes to emailing though. BigCommerce can be used to automate emails to customers based on what they purchased. If your company sells shoes, you can shoot them an email after they bought a pair to see if they need socks, laces or cleaning supplies. With upselling strategies like that, you’re bound to bring in more business.
You could also automate emails so they’re sent out around the holidays or various events that may be tied to your industry. Even if you don’t land purchases, these emails can help build traffic.
BigCommerce will even automate the laborious process of compiling lists of customers based on their purchases, the total products they ordered, when they bought from you, the country they’re from and much more. Now you’ll have an easy time crafting a unique message for each of these categories to help bring in more sales.

  • We have used BigCommerce for over a year and it's ease of use is wonderful. It gives you step by step in setting up items with all the info you would need, please you can add custom fields as necessary. Customer service tends to be hard to come by though. Thankfully it's not needed too often because of the simplicity and ease of the site.

Pros : - Very easy to navigate - Simple look - Design how we want

Cons : - Lack of Customer Service (takes many steps to get in contact) - Flexible shipping rates is unavailable which makes it difficult for accurate shipping costs

For online store owners who take a more casual approach to their business, Bigcommerce may not be the best option since its cheapest package is still somewhat pricey. Bigcommerce is (almost) out-of-the-box solution for your online store. Bigcommerce is framework, CMS, shopping cart, themes and hosting combined into one service.
When writing about Bigcommerce, I should really write about two its parts separately. One part is development tool. If you use built, ready to use theme, you don’t really need a developer to have your site ready to use. You can use one of a vast number of (free or premium) themes available for your site. Creating your site structure, menus, categories and so on, require some research time, looking at instructions and API manual.

Then if you want to customize your site, sometimes you can hit a wall. API does not allow too much. There are some things not possible to be done. It is also not easy to find place in code (and actual file), where you need to do specific change.

The second part, CMS plus store management is better organized. Once you have your site create with categories and settings, adding new products, managing them, managing customers and sales is relatively easy. It also requires some learning time from the beginning, but once you get it, it’s easier.

The site also allows bulk actions, like adding your products from, for example, Excel spreadsheet files or CVS files. You can get various reports as well. You have also 24/7 support, which is not bad.

    Pros :

    • Mobile friendly.
    • You can have your site done created really fast and with low cost.
    • No need for developers. You can do your site with no coding.
    • Everything in one place.
    • Once price for everything – cheaper than having everything from different sources (vendors).

    Cons :

    • Tool is not very well organized. It is hard to find something without looking in instruction.
    • Hard to do custom changes. The API does not allow much customization.
    • Hard to find line of code to do simple change; however, the live code view helps with this.

Bigcommerce is a strong and reliable only store builder option for small and medium-sized companies looking to expand their online presence. They offer a variety of services, and although they lack some of the wider variety services competitors offer, they've focused on core services which make a reliable storefront for merchants to present to customers. They offer a strong 360 marketing plan which will truly help you reach your client base. The features are expanding all the time and can meet the need of almost any company looking to expand its e-commerce footprint. The amount of integrations available is incredibly impressive with backing from some of the biggest software players around like Quickbooks and Salesforce. BigCommerce truly has put in the time to be much more than just a website market provider, and instead offers an all around solution to help take your web storefront to the next level. If you’re looking to replace an existing e-commerce system their worth giving a try to see if they can meet all the needs of your organization. So long as you work with them up front they seem to be able to accommodate all different businesses with varying needs. It takes too much time and effort to be able to accomplish that, especially with all the available e-commerce solutions out there. They have a low complaint rate, so problems are infrequent. However, if you do run into a problem, one drawback is that although they can have pricey plans at the higher levels support is not always increased with an increased plan with them.

    Pros :

    • Great array of features available, which all seem to work really well together.
    • Several different integrations available from all the largest "killer" apps out there.

    Cons :

    • Lacking customer service and support at times.
    • Even if you're a large client, you may not feel issues you are experiencing are important to the support staff.

Once I figured out all the ins and outs of Bigcommerce, I like it, I'm familiar with it, I've run over $100k in sales through it. But I hear Internet marketers are using Shopify now as the preferred platform. I'm fine with either. I find Bigcommerce's designs to be a bit outdated... it's very basic design wise, though you can edit the design, that's more for technical people who know how. BigCommerce excels with its functionality instead, such as the ability to have products with various options, and its marketing features, such as Google Shopping integration, eBay, and several other marketing venues to make sales and drive traffic. It also integrates with other functionality, like form builders. I've had some issues with BigCommerce in the past related to their CDN move which lasted a month and that held up getting a site done and cost me nearly $1,000 and their customer support couldn't figure it out. That tarnished its reputation in my mind. That and the outdated design. And some coupons I couldn't create in the system; you're limited to the structures BigCommerce wants to offer.

    Pros :

    • Solid store platform.
    • Lots of marketing integrations to get sales and traffic.
    • Has options for taxes, shipping, coupons

    Cons :

    • Designs are basic and outdated.
    • Challenging to figure out how to customize things in their design editor at times.
    • Support is a bit inept at times, though overall 'good'.
    • Some limitations with coupons

I have used Bigcommerce on multiple occasions, and it is a great shopping cart solution. It competes very well with the likes of WooCommerce, Shopify and Wix, and the website builder is also quite decent. The biggest issues are related to money, as Bigcommerce's pricing seems to be on the more expensive side of its competitors. Nonetheless, it is an excellent eCommerce platform, and far easier to use than Magento.

    Pros :

    • Most shops are mobile-friendly.
    • Many software applications and SaaS products are able to integrate with Bigcommerce.
    • Bigcommerce has a marketplace with tried and tested applications to carry out common tasks, which can save development time.
    • The website builder has a decent amount of features, and gets the job done easily, as long as the shop requirements are not too complex.
    • Bigcommerce is SEO friendly at its core.
    • Contrary to many WordPress plugins, the apps available on the Bigcommerce marketplace are usually quite stable and generally have less bugs, in my experience.
    • Although Bigcommerce is not cheap, their customer service has been great, in my experience. This is one of the perks of opting for software like this, rather than open source solutions, where you often need to fend for yourself if issues arise.

    Cons :

    • There is no free version as of writing, which is a big disadvantage for users looking to start a simple online shop, and perhaps scale in the future, as their sales increase. Competitors such as WooCommerce offer a free version with many useful features out of the box.
    • In general, there seem to be more themes and plugins available for Bigcommerce's competitors, such as Shopify and WooCommerce, although Bigcommerce does have a healthy plugin offering.
    • The cheapest plan costs $30 per month, at the time of writing, which is hardly a negligible cost, especially when considering that some competitors offer free plans.
    • Besides paying $30 a month for the cheapest plan, Bigcommerce also charge a 1.5% transaction fee.

Overall it's a pretty good ecommerce store and I've done a lot of sales through there. Yes, there are occasionally some glitches in technology and the themes seem a bit out-dated, but overall the pros far outweigh the cons. This is because it is easy to use when it comes to handling sales, shipping, taxes, and customizing the theme. I also like how you can add all of your products in here, then export them to Google Shopping, Ebay, and other online stores. So, great software!

    Pros :

Nice set of features, easy to use, great for handling sales

    Cons :

    Occasional glitches, lack of themes
