It goes without saying that every company these days needs a web presence. Without a website, it’s impossible for a company to reach as many customers as it otherwise would. It’s also hard to take a company seriously if they can’t even offer such a basic service. If your company currently lacks this essential feature, don’t despair. Web design software can be all it takes to get the site you need for your business.
As the name suggests, web design software refers to platforms that allow you to build your own website. In the past, this could still be a very technical undertaking—sometimes it still is. Nowadays, though, many platforms make it easy to build a site thanks to an intuitive interface.
Most modern platforms allow you to look at the website you’re developing three different ways. First, there’s the standard view, also sometimes called the design or normal view. This is usually the default option and is little more than a blank screen on which you can add content either by typing or pasting. In many ways, it’s no different than a word processor screen.
Code view lets you view the underlying HTML code and work with it directly, if you like.
Lastly, there’s a split view, which puts the above two views up simultaneously, side by side, so you can work with both at the same time.
With how many different options exist today, though, there are all kinds of ways these programs allow you to create and continue to work on websites. Many don’t even bother with writing HTML. You simply decide what you want the end product to look like and then the software handles the HTML end of it.
Your company definitely needs a website. That much shouldn’t be up for debate. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it makes sense to invest in web design software. Before we continue, think about the type of website your company wants and the resources it has.
Web design software is generally a good idea for simple, yet effective sites. If you’re advertising your services as a lawyer, for example, this will only take a handful of webpages. Even if you want to add on a blog or pages based on SEO keywords, this shouldn’t be too difficult as they’ll be more-or-less uniform in appearance. The same goes for all kinds of ecommerce purposes.
For this reason, web design software is a great option for small and medium-sized businesses that don’t want to spend money on hiring a professional. As long as they need fairly simple pages (again, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing) and can invest the time into learning the platform, it makes a lot of sense.
However, if you have dreams of a site that supports complex pages where customers can provide feedback and ratings for products, talk to one another in forums, do comparison shopping, etc., web design software probably won’t offer what you need. The same goes for social media sites as well.
Keep in mind, too, that if all you want is a blog, something like WordPress will provide you with all kinds of tools at a very affordable price.
Ready to begin building your own website? Before you do, make sure you think about the below features, which are important for a quality platform to include.
Most of us don’t know HTML or other programming languages. If you’re willing to put the time into learning one of them for building a website, you can purchase a program that will suit your new skills. Keep in mind, though, that people spend years getting proficient at these languages. Those hoping to get up and running soon should opt for a far simpler method.
Many in your shoes prefer what is called a WYSIWYG application. This stands for “What You See Is What You Get” and basically means that whatever you put on the screen when building your site is exactly how it will look to the user.
Most web design software is going to cost you. While free versions exist, unless we’re talking about a CMS like WordPress, your results are probably going to lack. This doesn’t mean you have to budget thousands of dollars away to create this new site, but a couple hundred would not be unheard of.
Before you buy any software, take a look at the types of websites it’s been used for in the past. It’s the same approach you might take to a homebuilder. No matter what they say or how little they charge, you should take a look at what they can actually do. Search the web for sites made with any software you’re considering and pick the one that was responsible for sites you like the most.
With web design software, you can start building a professional site and have it up in running within a matter of days. Best of all, you’re in control the entire time.
