"After 2 separate Marketo implementations and using it for years, I give it two thumbs up"

Marketo Use Cases and Deployment ScopeMarketo is being used by our marketing and sales departments. It allows our organization to better track marketing initiatives and integrate new leads and results into Salesforce, providing better visibility for our entire team.

  • Great tool for Marketing automation for larger companies

Great tool for marketing automation and pretty much is one of the tools that are helping define the standard in this market. It is a great tool with lots of possibilities but it's not easy to use and ramping up can take some time. That is expected though from such a type of tool.

Pros : Many possibilities when it comes to emailing, profiling and working with lists, integration with SFDC and other CRM systems. Landing pages also offer great possibility.

Cons : Because of its nature, it can take time to ramp up and caution is recommended before giving licenses away at the company. Training is necessary and a strategy for the companys marketing execution.

    Full Power Marketing Automation

With Marketo you have a Marketing Automation Suite is great to create straight forward lead capturing campaigns but also sophisticated marketing campaigns with dynamic content and multi-dimensional campaigns. It is a full Marketing Platform with a lot of features to save time and crate successful campaigns. It works fine with Salesforce CMR and SAP C4C (Cloud)

Pros : Customer Support and Training. Never had such a professional, but also demanding introduction. But they know, why they are doing it. The Platforms possibilities are huge and will provide the success you need to afford it. Almost everything is possible. Each step of a campaign can be adjusted. You can create your own reports at any stage in the campaign. To copy a whole campaign, including landing pages, flows and all e-mails take just a few clicks. But what is really impressive; to adjust the

Cons : If it is your first Marketing Automation Software, go and hire a consultant. It is hard to get into the system, if this topic is new for you. There are a few decision you have to take (structure) in an early stage that will cause more work if there are wrong or just missed. Also because of its flexibility it is hard to understand and at it first few rather complex than logical. You definitely need do invest time to get it up and running.

    Powerful beast

Been using Marketo for close to a year, and in this time have gone from complete novice to Marketo geek. It is packed with functionality, which is often underused because it has been set up wrongly, or you've never learnt how to use it. There is LOADS of help on their site, including how-to docs and a very active, helpful community. Make sure to get set up by experts, and USE THE DOCS to learn.

Pros : - Very powerful - so, so much more than an email marketing platform. - When set up properly, reporting becomes tonnes easier. - Becomes a crucial backbone for growing a marketing department. - Great support docs and superb community.

Cons : - Time consuming and confusing at times. - We've had a fair few bugs. - Very expensive.

  • Confused But Optimistic

    What do you like best?

I quite enjoy the ability to clone programs, emails, etc. and all the assets that are within the programs. It's a great time saver and helps ensure that I don't miss any steps along the way - I just create the first 'template' program and just copy it from there each time I need it.

    What do you dislike?

We went with Marketo over other competitors because of the reporting capabilities, but I have to admit that I'm normally confused and frustrated when working in that area. I can't easily drill down in reports for specific date periods, or simply to see source data. It's actually quite difficult for me to find what I need. And if certain things aren't logged in a specific way in our CRM, nothing works... which is a bit of a nightmare. It also drives me crazy that the Record Type Field pulls a random code from Salesforce, rather than the name of the record type - like Prospect or Customer, instead it's 012500000005UpzAAE (which is impossible to remember).

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure your CRM data is in tiptop shape and you have a friendly sales ops person willing to help you with data analysis. Depending on the size of your company, you could fill an entire role just with handling the various components of Marketo, especially if you have a lot of custom information in your CRM. We weren't prepared for how data intensive it was going to be and our Marketing team just doesn't have that data savvy person, so we've certainly struggled in that regard.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

We're pretty new to Marketo so I can't say we've "solved" any problems yet - more like it's helped us uncover a lot of new problems with our contact database and just general marketing efforts. Which is good, but also frustrating. We now have more data to review, but we struggle a lot with a non-biased opinion on this data... having more information on how to interpret data from Marketo might help us more, we're a small team and we lack a firm understanding in that area.

A Non-Operationally Minded Marketo User Review

    What do you like best?

Of all the automation softwares I explored, Marketo was a clear winner when it came to usability and design. We've been a customer for over 2 years now and each product update has continued to make my job easier and easier.

The new analytics visuals on email send programs give a clear picture into email performance, without having to dig around and manipulate numbers.

I should add that I would never consider myself to be an operational type person, I'm definitely more on the creative side of the brain. Learning and using Marketo has been incredibly easy.

    What do you dislike?

The speed of the platform is often troublesome. For marketing teams that need to move fast (all!), there are significant lag times when pulling lists, approving emails and landing pages, and just jumping from campaign to campaign.

My only other complaint is that as a Spark user, support response times are just unacceptable. It can be hours or days between hearing from someone and finding a solution. Now, as a Standard user this is remedied by direct phone support, but even that is often slow.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Definitely make sure you have a rollout plan and a dedicated team member to manage the platform. When there are lots of cooks in the kitchen, things can get messy and data quality goes down.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

Prior to Marketo we were using MailChimp for our email marketing efforts. Since making the switch, creating segmented nurture tracks has been a huge help on bandwidth because I know that leads will be emailed regularly.

The other big issue for us is demonstrating marketing's impact on the business. Program reporting and syncing to salesforce has really helped us demonstrate to leadership the importance and value of marketing spend. It's also helped us figure out where to put our dollars.

  • Ease-of-use

Once you get the hang out it (they have great training materials), it's great!

    Functionality

They are always adding more to meet more needs. I use it for emails, nurtures, lead management, scoring, reporting, and much more.

    Product Quality

Great. This is high on the quality list of marketing automation software.

    Customer Support

Their customer support is the best part. If I put in a ticket to support, they are friendly and prompt.

    Likes Best

The customer community. Marketo really makes their customers feel important, and they take our suggestions into some new releases. We have a great platform to bounce ideas off each other, etc.

    Likes Least

I don't have anything negative to say. They are always improving.

    Recommendations

There's lots of marketing automation software out there but a good number of those focus on emails only. So, evaluate carefully.

I can't express how much easier Marketo makes my life. I am the events manager at my company, and I use Marketo's lead management functionality to send out my invitations, set up my registration pages and manage my attendee lists.

Marketo was great before - but now, with the new Programs & Events release, it is AMAZING! We have a small marketing department, so I am responsible for every aspect of an event, from start to finish and beyond with our follow-up program. From roadshows, trade shows, and dinners to parties, dinners, and meet-up groups - you name it, I handle it though Marketo. I love being able to tie all my assets together under an event, and being able to clone an entire event saves time and allows me to focus on other aspects of the event. It also helps me easily track my cost-per-lead and figure out which events are driving the most leads and helping us close the most deals.

With 15 different events planned over the next four months, in cities all across the world, I am going to be on the road a ton. It's key for me to be able to set everything up in advance and know that it will just GO when it needs to. Furthermore, being able to check on it from anywhere in the world with the touch of a button brings me huge peace of mind. After the event, our programs manager can funnel our leads through our nurturing program until they are ready to be engaged. Our sales team loves this because they can focus on working with an opportunity, not looking for one.

I can't rave enough about their support. The community helps me solve so many different "How do I do this?" questions. When I have best practice questions, I can reach out to other Marketo users for guidance. On the rare occasions we have had to contact support for a technical issue, they get back to us ASAP - even for small concerns.

In summary, Marketo is the best!

Marketo has an outstanding product and great support, but their greatest strength is their leadership in terms of where marketing and marketing automation are headed. Marketers are constantly challenged to improve on their strategies and programs, so choosing a partner who will keep you on the leading edge of this rapidly evolving space is critical. Marketo has successfully created a tool that is both feature-rich and easy to use. We have needed zero IT support to implement e-mail campaigns, landing pages and lead scoring and the Salesforce integration is very tight.

To help you make the most of the solution, Marketo provides you with lots of great tools, content and ideas on how to succeed with marketing automation - key resources in leveraging any tool. The product is backed by an excellent team of people who are extremely responsive to customers, from leadership to the customer support to the product team. If you recognize that choosing a marketing automation solution is equal parts the tool itself and the partner behind it, then Marketo is the right choice for you.
