There are a lot of screencast tools for Windows. Mac users have fewer options than other Operating Systems users. ScreenFlow is one of them. This software offers sound recording from microphone or built-in camera along with the screen video. This feature is very convenient because while recording you can immediately give comments. It clearly simplifies the process and eliminates the need for video editing. However, if necessary, the finished video can be edited. ScreenFlow offers a built-in editor with the timeline interface. One can rearrange clips on the timeline, to cut them and set the clips priority. By dragging the mark in the center of the screen, it is possible to rotate the video. When working with video, it is also possible to set the "approaching" on the screen and the brightness. One can crop the picture around the edges, add reflections, adjust color balance, add filters, change the output level of sound and apply audio effects, add annotations and text to the video. Also, the user can make a visual display of mouse clicks and increase the cursor, which is very useful while creating video tutorials. ScreenFlow also offers to dim the entire screen except the place on which the mouse is induced. The video could be uploaded to YouTube or other video sharing services. It is also possible to save the video on one of many supported formats. All settings could be configured manually. It's great that ScreenFlow allows to export a few uncompressed formats. So it is possible to use the external encoder to fine-tune the output format.

Pros :

  • ScreenFlow saves the various media used in the project in a single file.
  • The video editing is available immediately after the capture.
  • Multi-track capability.
  • Capturing multiple video/audio streams at once.

Cons :

  • The program often freezes during the editing.
  • There are a lot of small usability issues.

I purchased the Flip4Mac Pro version ($29) because for my work I've sometimes needed to convert wmv files to mov or mp4 files for editing on my Mac. Flip4Mac worked like a charm. I was surprised that this wasn't included in Quicktime or as a paid add-on. Maybe some licensing issue with Microsoft. But Microsoft has openly endorsed Flip4Mac as Windows Media Components for QuickTime on their website. It's pretty much the only known component for OSX that supports Windows Media Video and Audio. That format itself is a dying breed, where the preference now is mp4. Mac's native format is mov, and web browsers are now also using webm and ogv. So with all of these formats, being able to convert between them all is crucial. Uploading to YouTube generally does the job for you, but sometimes there are cases if you're viewing a video on your computer or editing, using a standalone player or a website theme and you need to convert the files on your own. The WMV and WMA formats are what Microsoft Windows Movie Maker uses, which is the free program distributed with Windows (kinda like Paint is for images), so it's still widely in use especially amongst Windows users. There are several pricing levels that are both affordable and make sense: - Flip4Mac Player which allows you to play Windows Media files - The Pro version allows to you to import and convert using QuickTime - The Studio version has higher dimensions - The Studio Pro HD has higher quality with two-pass encoding

Pros :

- Converts WMV and WMA files to Mac formats for editing or viewing - High-quality, affordable price - Handles other files formats too like ASF - Can do high dimension and high-quality encoding

Cons :

- Costs money, but worth it to get a more quality product that's updated over time - Doesn't work with DRM content, but DRM really isn't in use any more anyway.

In the end, if you have the money to spare towards such an excellant product, I would highly suggest it. ScreenFlow is no doubt the best screen recording software I've ever used. It's stable, fast, efferent when it comes to data usage, and just such a great design overall. Those are the reasons why every Mac user should own this application.

Highly recommended. Flip4Mac could be considered as one of the essential Mac applications, one of the most popular video and music players for Mac OS X. Overall, the price is fair since you’ll really get a lot of features which you don’t have by default within your Mac OS X.
