The first thing which needs to be said about Painter is that it is not Photoshop. Corel leans in heavy on the Digital Artist Software moniker and for a good reason. Painter is not about Image Manipulation or Image Editing (Photoshop's mainstay), it's about creating art. The easiest way to think about the line between the programs is this. If your goal is to clean up a Photo for the magazine cover, then Photoshop is your tool. If your task is to create a digital Mona Lisa, Painter's the alley you want to be in.Photoshop has some basic art effects, watercolor and pastel are a few. And several plugins grow that base significantly. But none of them could touch the raw power of Painter when it comes to Art medium simulation.Painter is a mature product, almost as old as Photoshop. And it's learning curve is just about as steep. This is not a tool that one installs and starts producing art within the hour. It has a huge amount of adjustable brushes, and each attribute can be customized to taste. But because of its maturity, Painter doesn't have too much new it can introduce by way of new brushes or gimmicks to attract a user to purchase. What Painter relies on is the ability to perfectly simulate a multitude of art forms, oils, crayon, chalk, watercolor on different canvas' and produce an output that truly is representative of the creator's talent. If you can't draw, you can't blame Painter. Brush strokes heavy handed? All will be revealed. Painter is truly representative of the artist medium.Although there are some plugins for Painter, and it does fully support Photoshop Brushes, allowing the user to leverage the huge amount of free brushes on the web, Painter pretty much comes ready to use out of the box. The one must have item I would mandate that any artist serious about using the software effectively get is a fairly large Tablet. In fact, I'd say that not using a tablet with Painter makes the software essentially useless since it relies so heavily on the artist hand pressure and stroke. One can do Image retouch by mouse, but not painting a matte using oils or a charcoal drawing. Bottom line, use the money you would have spent on Photoshop art plugins to get a fair sized tablet. Working in Painter is easy, and it handles large files easily, via it's Riff file format. Even though it doesn't leverage GPU rendering, Painter rarely chokes on files that can easily reach a terabyte. It is also fully compatible with Photoshop and can write to the PSD format. In the end, if painting, drawing and producing "art" in a digital medium is your goal, Painter is by far the best tool.

Pros :

  • Mature software that comes ready to use out of the box.
  • Digital Art Software accomplishes its goal.
  • A full featured tool for Professional Artist, customizable brush, stroke, light, color attributes.
  • Stores Artist Palettes..
  • Can produce artfully representative of your talent.
  • Supports Photoshop Brushes.
  • Uses proprietary RIFF format which support large file sizes.
  • New Digital audio Brush uses audio file to paint.

Cons :

  • Expensive for anyone other than the Professional Artist.
  • Learning curve can be steep.
  • Tablet necessary to get quality art.
  • Cheaper tools available if "Artifying" your Photos is your goal.
  • An commitment in time to maximize your investment in software.

AutoCad...should be the perfect software for draft, generation of technical documentation, etc. In reality, if you buy AutoCad you will be fascinated by its simplicity and ease of use, its flexible user interface, keyboard shortcuts (or hotkeys)...lots and lots of positive features. To make it short: "AutoCAD is a backbone of the industry, a perfect for 2D projects absolutely world ace for this purpose, but go to the 3D and you will learn his dark side, everything is still possible just much much harder". If you keep it cool and work just draft you are the king but if you dare to go in dark side of the software you would be surprised how things are not going that fast, but never the less in 3D mode it is still good and stable.Just do not expect 3D performance that can be meet with other parametric software. Verdict : PERFECT 2D / AVERAGE 3D.

Pros :

  • Perfect user interface, with modern ribbon style, no overkill with icons and shortcuts, inside properties classical options that are very useful. Very very useful software very versatile for general and professional usage.
  • Projects have never bean so simple to execute.
  • Still the biggest thumb up is the possibility to do anything that you want without boring error messages and constraints, annotations that arrived from heaven, easy way for changing a vast array of properties in just one click, perfectly healthy sense of layers, etc.
  • Realty God gave software for everyday engineering.
    andnbsp;

Cons :

  • Hmm...if you need an easy to use powerful every day for every need software, then this is for you.
  • If you are the type of users that urges for 3D performance, easy 3D features, you want advanced easy to use wireframe capabilities, etc... STAY AWAY FROM THIS! This software can do all of this but at the cost, high cost if you ask me, you need a lot of time and effort to achieve a feature that can be done in a matter of seconds in 3D Parametric software like Catia or ProE or Inventor, etc..
  • Still good for everyday work.

Alone or as a companion to Photoshop, Painter brings the maximum in artistic possibilities to digital artists and creative professionals. Keep in mind that you'll need a pressure sensitive graphics tablet to get the most satisfaction out of Painter.

PageandLayout Designer makes keeping your business collateral consistent drag-and-drop simple, but it's a clone of Xara PhotoandGraphic Designer with an inflated pricetag. Pros: Intuitive UI that's easy to use Template based Powerful vector drawing and photo editing tools Cons: Pricey clone of existing product
