The first thing which needs to be said about Painter is that it is not Photoshop. Corel leans in heavy on the Digital Artist Software moniker and for a good reason. Painter is not about Image Manipulation or Image Editing (Photoshop's mainstay), it's about creating art. The easiest way to think about the line between the programs is this. If your goal is to clean up a Photo for the magazine cover, then Photoshop is your tool. If your task is to create a digital Mona Lisa, Painter's the alley you want to be in.Photoshop has some basic art effects, watercolor and pastel are a few. And several plugins grow that base significantly. But none of them could touch the raw power of Painter when it comes to Art medium simulation.Painter is a mature product, almost as old as Photoshop. And it's learning curve is just about as steep. This is not a tool that one installs and starts producing art within the hour. It has a huge amount of adjustable brushes, and each attribute can be customized to taste. But because of its maturity, Painter doesn't have too much new it can introduce by way of new brushes or gimmicks to attract a user to purchase. What Painter relies on is the ability to perfectly simulate a multitude of art forms, oils, crayon, chalk, watercolor on different canvas' and produce an output that truly is representative of the creator's talent. If you can't draw, you can't blame Painter. Brush strokes heavy handed? All will be revealed. Painter is truly representative of the artist medium.Although there are some plugins for Painter, and it does fully support Photoshop Brushes, allowing the user to leverage the huge amount of free brushes on the web, Painter pretty much comes ready to use out of the box. The one must have item I would mandate that any artist serious about using the software effectively get is a fairly large Tablet. In fact, I'd say that not using a tablet with Painter makes the software essentially useless since it relies so heavily on the artist hand pressure and stroke. One can do Image retouch by mouse, but not painting a matte using oils or a charcoal drawing. Bottom line, use the money you would have spent on Photoshop art plugins to get a fair sized tablet. Working in Painter is easy, and it handles large files easily, via it's Riff file format. Even though it doesn't leverage GPU rendering, Painter rarely chokes on files that can easily reach a terabyte. It is also fully compatible with Photoshop and can write to the PSD format. In the end, if painting, drawing and producing "art" in a digital medium is your goal, Painter is by far the best tool.

Pros :

  • Mature software that comes ready to use out of the box.
  • Digital Art Software accomplishes its goal.
  • A full featured tool for Professional Artist, customizable brush, stroke, light, color attributes.
  • Stores Artist Palettes..
  • Can produce artfully representative of your talent.
  • Supports Photoshop Brushes.
  • Uses proprietary RIFF format which support large file sizes.
  • New Digital audio Brush uses audio file to paint.

Cons :

  • Expensive for anyone other than the Professional Artist.
  • Learning curve can be steep.
  • Tablet necessary to get quality art.
  • Cheaper tools available if "Artifying" your Photos is your goal.
  • An commitment in time to maximize your investment in software.

Recently, I was given a chance to check out Manga Studio 5 by Smith Micro. I was a little worried that it wouldn't be user friendly and I would be lost after the install. There's so much you can do with this software, it's almost overwhelming. Since I'm a newbie, I'm going to keep it simple and go over the parts of the software I found easiest to work with.

Alone or as a companion to Photoshop, Painter brings the maximum in artistic possibilities to digital artists and creative professionals. Keep in mind that you'll need a pressure sensitive graphics tablet to get the most satisfaction out of Painter.

The first thing I thought when I opened the program was: "Whoa! It changed a lot from last version, such an amazing change and has a nice and clean interface. It surely looks more friendly". And well to be honest what I thought on the beginning is becoming better and better while I'm testing the tools and the markers.
