  • Camtasia is arguably best in class for the purpose of screen recording and there is nothing else around that I know of that can compete with it. It is intuitive and most importantly is designed in a way that ensures you can get the best possible recording in the best possible way based on what you want to do with that recording in the end.

  • Camtasia Studio is seen as the greatest programs on the market for screen recording. It’s hard to argue against Camtasia. No Software is able to match the accessibility and ease of use that Camtasia offers.

  • Easy to use, fairly robust for the price

    What do you like best?

I've been using Camtasia off and on for 13 years as a learning and marketing tool. It's a great tool for editing learning assets. We use it for small things like editing a recorded webinar that we're going to put on an LMS to more sophisticated things like creating a SCORM course with quizzes, a table of contents, animation, mixtures of screen recordings and narrated "slides".

When we are working on large projects we'll have SMEs download Camtasia and they are able to pick it up pretty quickly doing the basic recording and editing and then I come back and add the more sophisticated things. I love it and recommend it to everyone!

    What do you dislike?

There are few things they've improved greatly in the past few years (like quizzing) so it amazes me that their text boxes can't do some of the rich text editing like bullets and indents. I have found work-arounds for most things I need to do--I type bullets by typing ALT + 0149 (which makes a dot like this •)

Animation is still a bit clunky but it's better than nothing.

For the price and ease of use, I can live with these things.

Have made countless courses and marketing videos

Fully featured recording and editing suite

    What do you like best?

The UI has a good balance between design and layout making it very usable, I particularly like how saving a recording will then open the Camtasia Producer software and automatically import the recording ready to be edited. The recording resolution is very good.

    What do you dislike?

My only negative is that there doesn't seem to be a way to emphasise mouse clicks or have key presses appear on screen as part of the recording which would be very useful when recording training videos for systems.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are hoping to capture external sound with the video (e.g. someone narrating the process on screen) I would recommend using an external desktop microphone as microphones built in to the PC can't usually pick up the voice and can be quite quiet. By using an external directional microphone to capture voice will help to remove the sound of keyboard typing as well.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

I use Camtasia for recording and producing training videos for internal systems in order to support the training and development of staff resulting in increased productivity. The benefit of recording the screen with Camtasia as opposed to with a video camera is that there is no screen glare or flickering, and the resolution is higher making a clearer end video.

Ive used Camtasia at Nestle, Honda, Khafre, and Banner Health. I love this program.

    What do you like best?

Well, for me, because of the work I do, my favorite feature is the PowerPoint plugin. I love the simplicity.

    What do you dislike?

A small gripe I have may not be a Camtasia issue but it seems like Camtasia regularly forgets which microphone/speakers I prefer. E.g. If I record something today using a microphone headset from Plantronics. Then I go to record something tomorrow, Camtasia doesn't remember my choice and defaults to the PCs builtin speaker and mic. This wastes time and energy. I would love to see a feature in Camtasia that allows me to "default to these settings" when selecting i/o devices.

Recommendations to others considering the product

An area where Camtasia falls short of its competitors is in the area of recording simulations. When I use the Adobe product to record my screen, the tool automatically records and labels mouseclicks. Whereas in Camtasia I need to add all labels. Camtasia has great labeling (callouts) but its 100% manual. I would love to see more automation options in this space.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

I use this tool to create elearning modules. Videos. With Powerpoint visuals and voiceover audio. Recording and editing is so quick and easy that I can produce modules quickly and efficiently.

  • Camtasia Studio is an excellent choice for easy creation of slick education, information or promotion videos.. Camtasia Studio version 8 is a major step up in easy-to-create interactive videos. The results can be quite stunning even for non-professional users.

  • Simply the best screen-capture program there is, Camtasia Studio 8 adds a host of functions, features and media assets to an already great program. Camtasia Studio could be your screen capture program, multimedia project creator and video editor. It's easy to use, has masses of features, and represents decent value - if you will use all of its many facets.

  • Camtasia is one of the best screencast applications for Mac. If you need to make a training video, a demonstration of your software, or some other project, you will appreciate Camtasia's numerous handy features and intuitive interface.

  • While the program could do with adding some commonly used assets like keystroke stamps and an audio clip library, as well as better integration with SnagIt, Camtasia 2.0 builds on the strength of the original program and adds a number of features that really turn this into a professional level, short-video application. It is relatively simple to learn and use, attractively designed, and will handle just about anything from a 60-sec ‘how-to’ to a full corporate training video. Unless you need the kind of sophisticated TV camera input and post-production facilities offered by something like Final Cut Pro, or the interactive software simulation capability offered by Captivate, Camtasia should serve well the video creation and production needs of most technical communicators.

  • Despite the rough edges, Camtasia for Mac is a very promising first release. The editing interface is very well thought out, and the addition of built-in objects, transitions, and actions makes it simple to create nice looking productions. If your needs are relatively simple, and you'd like an easy-to-use application, Camtasia is worth consideration.

  • Camtasia is the best video capture software for Mac. It allows you to capture video and audio from your computer screen and gives you powerful tools and settings. When you record video on Mac computers, you can edit clips, add media and create any tutorial, demo or presentation. It provides an easy and powerful way to edit and share videos. The combination of strong recording features and versatile editing tools allows you to shoot and edit your videos quickly. We don't recommend Camtasia for game capture, but it will meet all of your other video capture and editing needs.
