I use Camtasia for demo videos, explanatory videos and also for client support. With so many projects being computer-based these days, the ability to actually show what's happening on your screen is so important. Having done computer support over the phone many times, it's often impossible to accurately describe what needs to be done in a way that newbies can understand... but anyone can follow a visual example. When offering support for my web apps, my clients are blown away when they get a personalized video with me reviewing their issue, and they can see how I solve it or hear/see the explanation. I use it almost daily.

Pros :

  • Easy of use.
  • Adding media to the timeline is easy.
  • You can add animations, call-outs, text, transitions... all in a very easy to use manner.
  • Upload integration with YouTube/Vimeo makes publishing super easy. Easy to use green screen, just use the "Remove a color" option in video properties.
  • Decent audio noise cleanup and volume levelling for quiet parts.
  • Built-in library of templates is awesome... it has both built in themes, animations and rights-free audio that can be safely used on YouTube.
  • The ability to record both screen and webcam simultaneously is great.
  • Using green screen, you can overlay your talking head in the bottom corner explaining just like live instruction.

Cons :

  • Lacks layering of chroma keying for green screen (you can only pick 1 color and then adjust variance).
  • Although there are adjustments for the color removal, without the ability to add color removal in layers for different shades... you really need to get the lighting done very well.
  • Also, older versions did not support the proprietary file format MTS (on some older Canon camcorders), but more recent versions do.
  • Sometimes opening projects made in older versions does not correctly "upgrade" the project to the new format, leaving the old project unusable.

Lynda is an amazing training library. If you are a subscriber, you have the benefit to learn from more than 3,000 online learning courses. Lynda’s lessons are structured in segments that are not very long, about 5 to 10 minutes each, and they will focus on a particular procedure or skill. It is sequential and very well organized. The training is for software such as Adobe products, Google, Microsoft. Some other subjects include 3D, animation, audio, business, design, developer, home computing photography, video and web/interactive. You pay monthly to have unlimited access to this video-learning/training library. You also have access to other resources such as worksheets and templates. For example, if you are interested in learning how to code, this website will teach you technical skills and techniques to do so. Although I have not used it for the business perspective, this website allows businesses to improve as well. This is a great training alternative as your own personal learning site or for your employees to motivate them to improve or learn new skills. I use it to learn about video editing and photography, I enjoy their easy to follow tutorials that allow you to go at your own pace. I also liked their video and audio quality, as well as how knowledgeable and well prepared their teachers are.

Pros :

  • No long term commitment, month to month payments.
  • Works well with PC, Mac Platforms and mobile devices.
  • Great video audio quality, to the point, short and well-prepared trainers.
  • It allows you to learn new skills at your convenience and you can choose your level, beginner to advanced.

Cons :

  • There is no forum where I could ask questions.
  • It is expensive.
  • The App did not work well on my Kindle, but it worked perfectly on my iPad

What do you like best?Super easy to record a video / demo, and then edit. Solution includes really useful video and audio effects like cropping or zooming if your recording area changes during recording. I use this software to record any/all webinars that we host, as well as to record demos of our product features. We then publish to services like Wistia which allows us to track usage of those videos on our website. What do you dislike? There are some limitations on file types that you can edit or export to. But rarely is that an issue for me

In sum, I just love the heck out of Lynda. Instruction is concise. Each tutorial series is so well-planned.The detail and thought that goes into producing each video is apparent. From the onscreen slides to the words spoken by the instructor, each lesson is a well-crafted production.I have no complaints about Lynda. Maybe that makes it more of an infatuation than love, but it’s being going on for a long time.
