ooVoo Review by Cloudswave

Keeping connected online no matter where you might be is easier than ever thanks to all of the new technology and devices that are available. It's no longer about just connecting on social media. It's about connecting in real time through virtual face to face contact. One of the most popular new options for connecting is ooVoo, a service for video chatting and texting that has become extremely popular with the younger generation over the past couple of years.
Right now, they are the "largest, independent video chat and messaging app" on the planet, and they have more than 100 million registered users. Each day, they add nearly a hundred thousand more visitors, and this shows just how quickly the company is growing. The majority of the users - 65% in fact - are under 25 years old. Most of the people who are using the service are doing so as a means of having fun and being social. They want to hang out and chat with their friends even when they aren't together in the same location. Sure, there are some entrepreneurs out there using this for business, but it is mostly friends and family that are getting together in the virtual world.
It is a global service as well, and people all around the world are using the applications. The service is extremely popular in the United States, Canada, and the UK. However, many other countries enjoy the service as well, including Japan and many other Asian markets. ooVoo is currently available in 130 countries around the world. It has a number of features that help to make it one of the best video chatting tools on the market today.

Is ooVoo Difficult to Use?

One of the first things that many people ask when it comes to ooVoo, and most other new technologies for that matter, is whether it is too complicated and complex to use. That is certainly not the case with this particular application. It is all very simple and very intuitive, so it isn't just the millennial crowd that will be able to use and understand the app!
Once you download the tool, open it and run the setup file wizard. You can then launch it and sign up for an account. It will then be an app that's on your computer, or your phone or tablet, that will launch when you click it. From there, you can make your calls and texts, and chat on video or send messages. However, there is one caveat. Everyone that you speak with and interact with through your ooVoo will need to have an account of their own. It does work cross platform though. So, if you are on a Mac, a friend is on a PC, and another friend is on their phone, you can all still connect with one another. They use the Internet connection for the service, so the device they are using doesn't matter.
In fact, it will even adjust the video call to the connection speed so that your call is clear and uninterrupted. It does not matter if you or your friends are on high speed or low speed connections, or a combination.

What Are the Features?

The most important feature of ooVoo, and the reason that so many people are using it, is the free video calling service. You can connect with all of your contacts with ooVoo quickly and easily, as long as you are online. You can connect through your computer, whether it is a Mac or PC, as well as through the downloaded apps on your phone or tablet. When you are on your computer, you can actually have up to 12 people on the video call at the same time. This can be a nice way for a family to stay connected even when they are in other parts of the country, as well as for friends to stay in touch. It is also a nice option for those businesses that need to have team meetings, or even to meet with clients. It's a very low cost option - free if you don't mind the ads.
If you are using your mobile device, you will only be able to have 4-way video calling, but that is generally more than enough for most people. Of course, you do not always have to have so many people on the line. You can simply communicate with one other person. Again, it's perfect for friends, that special someone, and more.
You will also get text and picture messaging, screen sharing, free voice calling, and other features. When you are using the free version, which we will discuss below, you will have ads on your app. This is how the company supports itself. You can always upgrade and have the ads removed if they bother you.
A feature that's available on PC that can be quite fun, is to watch YouTube videos together with your friends while you are video chatting. You can talk about the videos, discuss the day, and have a good time overall.
It is also possible to record your video calls so you can capture the conversation. You can share it with your friends, or you can save it for later. This is also available only on PC right now. If you want to send text messages, it is just as easy as sending a traditional text. With ooVoo, you can do this even when you are on one of the video chats.
Overall, everything is quite intuitive to use and simple to download and get started. You shouldn't have any issues with getting set up and running. If you do, their site does have a support area where you can find answers to the common questions regarding setting up the app and using on various types of devices.

What Does It Cost?

Downloading the app is always free, but they do have a premium service, as well as premium for mobile. In addition, if you want to call someone on the telephone, you will need to have ooVoo credit. You can use the credits on any of your devices, and they are available in different denominations - $10, $25, and $50. There is an auto recharge option if you would like, but they do not renew automatically unless you set it up that way. This ensures you don't have any surprise expenditures. The cost per minute will be the same no matter where you are calling from. Also keep in mind that the calls are outbound only, and ooVoo does not assign a phone number. The rate for the calls will vary by country, so remember this when buying your credits. You can find a list of the countries where the service is available and where you can call, along with the rates, right on their site.
The free version of ooVoo is supported by ads, but other than that, it has the same types of features as the higher level plan. It features 12-way video calls (4-way on mobile), which can be used to connect with your friends, work on a project with the family, or even work with colleagues. You can record and send video messages that are up to five minutes long, invite Facebook friends to connect with you on ooVoo, and have email customer support.
The premium version is $2.99 a month and has all of the same features, but it gets away with the advertisements. In addition, on PC and Mac, you will have 1,000 minutes of video call storage. You also get priority email customer support. The Premium for Mobile version is .99 cents per year and it removes third party advertising from the service.

Who Should Use ooVoo?

Is ooVoo right for you? It really depends on what type of video chat app you have been trying to find. This app, while it can certainly be used for some types of work, is more oriented toward being social and having fun. Many families who have members in other parts of the city, state, or country like to use the app to keep up and actually see one another when they speak. They like it better than the phone thanks to the visual aspect of it. Friends, even if they just saw one another at school or work, like to use the application as well just to be more social. Even though it is still communicating through devices, there is something less impersonal about video chatting than just tweeting and sending messages on Facebook.
It is extremely cheap as well. In fact, it's free if the ads do not bother you. Getting rid of the ads is just $2.99 per month, or $29.99 per year. On mobile, it's only .99 cents. If you have been trying to find a high quality and reliable way of keeping in touch with people through video, it is hard to go wrong with ooVoo. There are plenty of reasons it is gaining around 100,000 users a day.

  • In short, ooVoo is full-featured video conferencing tool, and Skype has nothing on it. If this was a little more popular, I can see many users switching to it. The fact that it is supported both in Mac OS X and Windows only makes it better.

  • ooVoo for Mac's basic interface and features make it a good option for those looking to use their computer for video and conference calls over the Internet. The program also performs as a functional IM client. For those looking for a functional application for computer calls, ooVoo for Mac works well, but may require payments in some instances.

  • I think ooVoo is one of the top audio and video communication services offered on the web and their free account has more than enough features for the average person to take advantage of.

    - Free to use for most features
    - Works on all platforms including mobile
    - Easy to send files or share desktop
    - HD video calling
    - Ability to leave video messages
    - Premium plan is affordable
    - Integrates with Facebook

    - Interface not as pleasing as Skype
    - Mac users can only see 6 videos feeds at once maximum

Skype and ooVoo are arguably the most popular software applications for video conferencing. While Skype has a much larger user-base, ooVoo is surely a decent choice for video conferencing and calls.
One of the biggest differences between ooVoo and Skype, which I have experienced, is that ooVoo's video calls seem to be more stable on the whole. I have noticed many more lost connections during calls, as well as latency issues while using Skype. In fact, the latter and former issues occur much less frequently on ooVoo, while running on the same devices and using the same internet connections. For users who are experiencing connection issues on Skype, ooVoo is therefore definitely a recommended alternative.
Another benefit of ooVoo is that screen sharing is possible within the free version, unlike Skype, which offers it as a premium feature. Screen sharing can be quite useful for some users, especially if video conferencing or troubleshooting computer issues, as well as providing tutorials.
Conference calls are also quite useful in ooVoo, especially since up to twelve simultaneous users are supported in the free version. This amount surpasses Skype's, so users who frequently attend video conferences in large groups may find that ooVoo is a better platform for hosting these types of calls. ooVoo is available for iOS and Android phones/tablets, as well as Windows and Mac based computers and laptops. This means that it is possible to communicate with users on a wide range of hardware, further reducing communication barriers.
Skype does, however, have the upper hand, in this case, as it is available on a wider range of hardware, and naturally has excellent Windows integration, deep within the operating system's core (both on mobile as well as desktop devices). Users who do not have ooVoo, however, can still join conversations, by using chatting with ooVoo users through a web browser. This is definitely a very useful feature.
On the whole, ooVoo is not as user-friendly as Skype, and ooVoo is overflowing with ads in the free version. When considering the advantages, however, it can appeal to some users, most of which would be very pleased with the experience.

    Pros :

    • Video calls seem to lose connection less often than Skype.
    • Free version allows for screen sharing, similar to TeamViewer.
    • Conference calls support many simultaneous users on the free version.
    • Desktop, Android and iOS applications are available.

    Cons :

    • There are many ads in the free version, unlike Skype.
    • Not as user-friendly as Skype.
    • Skype is available on more platforms and devices than ooVoo.

ooVoo is the VoIP application that can be considered as the Skype alternative. Its main advantage is good support for both desktop and major mobile platforms (iOS, Android, Windows Phone). Herewith the video calls are supported across all devices. Moreover, making video calls is the main purpose of the service. Transmitted video can be supplied with various special effects, which are superimposed on the fly. The chat supports up to 12 people communicating simultaneously, and not all of them necessarily have to be users of the service. If there is a need to communicate with those who have not installed the ooVoo application, you can generate a link to a video chat. The ones who received this link may join a video conference directly in the browser. They only need to provide Facebook login info or ooVoo account credentials. ooVoo for Windows is more functional than a mobile app. For example, in the desktop client you can send any files (in the mobile version only photos and video are supported), record calls and video messages, watch videos on YouTube with friends, transfer pictures from the desktop. Unfortunately ooVoo has not only advantages but also disadvantages. The main of them is the annoying advertising that appears both on the computer and on mobile devices. You can remove it only considering the paid version of the service, which also includes an online storage for up to 1000 minutes of video. This is not the best opportunity on the market. For example, Telegram Messenger app offers the free storage for videos up to 1 GB.

    Pros :

    • Free voice and video calls 12-way video chat.

    Cons :

    • Too much annoying ads Contacts often are not showing when logged in from Facebook.
    • The poor audio service Flash advertisements reduce the video quality.
    • The camera may suddenly stop working.
