  • Hip to HipChat!

HipChat Use Cases and Deployment ScopeMost of our IT departments use HipChat. We also have a few admin departments using the rooms feature. We are able to communicate on the fly in real time, see who is available at the time and eliminate mass emails. We also use the one on one chat.

Pros : Using the rooms for a dept is the best feature- you can lock rooms off as private or have open rooms for anyone to join. The emojis are pretty cool.

Cons : They should add the feature to be able to chat to 2 people in one conversation. The last update has been very buggy- Kept crashing. HipChat was fine until this update..Search feature used to work great but now it has not been working properly.

HipChat - A Robust in House Communication Tool

HipChat Use Cases and Deployment ScopeOur organization uses HipChat for both work and play. We have HipChat rooms for individual teams as well as for semi-work related topics such as our internal ping pong bracket and "Where Are We Going for Lunch Today?" Additionally, we use HipChat to stay in touch on a one-on-one basis as we are spread over several offices across the globe. When it comes to immediate, short communications, HipChat seems to be the default way of communicating.

Pros : Private and Public Chat Rooms - It's being able to have organization-wide chat rooms as well as private chat rooms with specific team members.Mobile App Functionality - Being able to get my HipChats on the go enables me to stay connected when I'm out of the office or in a meeting without a laptop. I appreciate being able to only have certain notifications turned on as it stops me from be inundated with messages I don't want to see when I'm on the go.Reference - Being able to search through old H

Cons : Aesthetics - This is a minor complaint, but I would like to be able to customize the aesthetic of my instance of HipChat. Currently users can only customize their profile picture.

  • Wishing for stronger features

Have used HipChat at work with my software development team, and while it does the job, it's not my favorite chat application out there.

Pros : Like the app on my phone, but often I miss the chats I receive there because after a push notification it's hard to go in and read the full content of the chat, or sometimes even find that message at all! I guess that's not really a pro anymore. I like that you can integration with Confluence, but I wish it was a deeper integration, like being about to group notifications together.

Cons : I want to be able to edit my chats after I send them and not just with the s// feature. I wish I could change the display so it took up less real estate on my screen.

    HipChat - Enabling ChatOps

HipChat is an easy to setup communication tool that provides our organization plenty of ways to integrate and pass messages. It can be be integrated into monitoring and alerting tools to quickly contact group within chat rooms and enable rapid response using ChatBots. There are so many pre-built integration's that you hardly have to do anything at all, but if you want or need to they have a very good API that you can use to write your own integration's.

Pros : Easy, fast, responsive Many integration's Great API

Cons : Using the hosted service there can sometimes be lag and service disruptions.

  • Awesome chat and conference app for buissiness

    What do you like best?

Using Hipchat for over a year now, I can tell you that I'm never switching to something other.

Just as with other Atlassian products, the pricing is simple. You can choose from a hosted solution or host it your self (which is great!).

    On the client side they have you covered; WebUI, Linux, Windows, Android, IOS and BB. I can only give my opinion about the WebUI, Linux and Android versions;

-- Nice, clean interface. No unnecessary stuff.

-- Message "arrival" time is fast (near to no delay)

-- With the newest version, they introduced "slash command" which is an easy way to, for instance, correct a previous message, add in a code block with highlighting, join or leave room etc.

-- full text search trough all messages

-- API is great. This gives you the possibility to intergrate with all your other software. For instance have your CI & CD notifications show up in a room, or give you status updates from Git.

    What do you dislike?

-- Video/audio call quality not always great (using hosted). Not sure what the problem is exactly, but nevertheless still better than competitors

-- No way to change status on mobile

-- Some more options regarding customizing the layout would be nice (dark UI, menu size....)

-- grouping groups and chats would be great when you have a lot of chats

Recommendations to others considering the product

Have a look at the self hosted version

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

Having a way to communicate with my customers and freelance employees.

    Great Upgrade for Us

    What do you like best?

I like that you have the web app, a desktop app and mobile app. For chat, I can't see the trend towards web app only being a good thing. Having the little icon flash in your taskbar is just so useful vs a tab in your browser that might not even be in the foreground. I can say that in our search for a new chat app to replace Spark, the desktop app was the deciding factor.

    Also the emoticons are key!

    What do you dislike?

I wish you could paste code into the chat without type /code. A repository for commands built into the web app would be great to help new users understand the options. The emoticon menu doesn't show all emoticons available. You have to go to their website to view the keywords for them.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's this or #Slack. There are no other options. Check them both out.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

Our on premise Spark chat had many problems due to many AD issues. It wasn't updated in years and did not fit with our modern web application goals here. HipChat has fixed this and collaboration is a lot easier. Also before you could setup rooms in Spark but you wouldn't auto join them when you closed spark and re-opened, which made the rooms dead. HipChat has persistent chat rooms that see so much collaboration now.

  • Despite the “one email to rule them all” approach, I really liked my time on Hipchat and would recommend it to any team looking for a collaborative environment. Once you get past the email hiccup, it’s a fantastic experience — especially since it works flawlessly on Android and iOS devices, which makes it easy to use on the go too.
