  • HipChat comes highly recommended for businesses and organizations that are looking for a communication solution that offers more than chatting features.

    Pros :

    Cons :

  • HipChat Use Cases and Deployment ScopeMost of our IT departments use HipChat. We also have a few admin departments using the rooms feature. We are able to communicate on the fly in real time, see who is available at the time and eliminate mass emails. We also use the one on one chat.

Pros : Using the rooms for a dept is the best feature- you can lock rooms off as private or have open rooms for anyone to join. The emojis are pretty cool.

Cons : They should add the feature to be able to chat to 2 people in one conversation. The last update has been very buggy- Kept crashing. HipChat was fine until this update..Search feature used to work great but now it has not been working properly.

  • Have used HipChat at work with my software development team, and while it does the job, it's not my favorite chat application out there.

Pros : Like the app on my phone, but often I miss the chats I receive there because after a push notification it's hard to go in and read the full content of the chat, or sometimes even find that message at all! I guess that's not really a pro anymore. I like that you can integration with Confluence, but I wish it was a deeper integration, like being about to group notifications together.

Cons : I want to be able to edit my chats after I send them and not just with the s// feature. I wish I could change the display so it took up less real estate on my screen.

Fun, "hip" way to keep in touch if you work with folks not in your area. Useful for communications obviously but also allows for the fun and humor to lighten up a rough work day with the hip chat emoticons offered as a way to express oneself.

    Pros :

    • Can create one on one chat rooms.
    • Can create customized chat rooms with just certain people.
    • Can create an Everyone room to get communications out to all online.
    • Can upload word docs, mp3 files, jpegs and movie files, which is all we do in our production business so it is a quick and easy way to share a file in real time.
    • You can tell when someone is online, unavailable or offline completely.
    • Hip chat comes with a mobile app so that you can receive the messages as texts.
    • Great way to keep in touch in a noisy, busy work environment.

    Cons :

    • The application does have a fairly often need to be updated so some folks may not be compatible to responding if one is using a certain version as opposed to the upgraded version.

Instant messaging services are ubiquitous and as such, can be very difficult to choose the right one. HipChat is a more modern, "hip" chat software, that allows for convenient collaboration between multiple users in your organization. Share files, videos, images, etc.. Hipchat defining factors are its ease of use, extensive chat history, and integration with JIRA. Easily start collaborative discussions based around issues or projects you are working on.

As with many chat features Hipchat shows who is available and who isn't. The service will notify you by email or on your phone if you are messaged. Add plenty of emoticons, tag other users, and set statuses, Hipchat has an every feature you would typically look for an instant messaging service.

    Pros :

Hipchat is a very user-friendly platform that gives your organization the ability to communicate quickly and effectively. There are many pros to using their software:

    • Hipchat integrates with JIRA, and you can create chat rooms for projects you are working on.
    • Hipchat allows you to bring guest chatters on to communicate and collaborate with those outside your organization.
    • Create private rooms for certain departments.
    • Easily send files of all kinds.
    • Keeps running history so you can scroll back to previous files or messages.
    • Has emoticons and fun ways to communicate.
    • Send GIFs and other items that open up in the window so you don't have to navigate to a web page.
    • Set statuses to let others know what youre doing and prevent from being disturbed.

    Cons :

    Hipchat does have some flaws:

    • The server seems to go down often and you'll find many moments of inactivity where you are unable to send messages and aren't connected.
    • Files can be a bit tricky, CSV's have to be right clicked and downloaded, otherwise they will just display improperly and unformatted in a browser window. On occasion, long bits of text pasted in will send as an "image" file and therefore useless to someone copying your text. There is a size limit as well which I understand but can be inconvenient when your job centers around sending files.

At my past company, we used HipChat on a daily basis to make sure we stayed in touch with eachother. We were a company of 150 people, but no more than 10 people worked in the same office. HipChat was a great way for our team to stay in touch. Whether it was sales talking to marketing, sales talking to engineering or the rare, marketing talking to engineering (which is never fun). What I enjoyed most about HipChat, other something like GoogleChat, was that you could send more than just a quick 1-liner to the appropriate party.

When working sales, my team and I would regularly send eachother information about who we were speaking with, information about the company, and how we wanted to handle a certain call. Along with that, it was a great way to connect with eachother (off-line) when on a demo to discuss next steps and what we wanted to say. From more or a "fun" perspective, which we all know Sales and Marketing love to have, HipChat allows you to send video, images and any other type of media to a group or specific person.

    Pros :

    • Ability to set up groups so that you can chat with certain people.
    • Ability to send content such as videos, links, images and anything else you like.
    • Always on.
    • HipChat is a constant system, which never shuts down and allows you to know when someone is available or not.

    Cons :

    • Call/video.
    • while HipChat is a great system to connect with the rest of your team, the audio aspect of the system tends to lack.
    • On a regular basis, my team and I would lose contact with eachother while on a call and would not be able to finish up the conversation..
    • Who is there?
    • the HipChat system is based on activity and sometimes will show that someone is not active because they have not use the HipChat services in a while. even is they are "around"
