  • Bitcasa is easy, really easy. While that's a winning feature for... well, pretty much anything... that doesn't mean that it alone makes a winning cloud backup service. The lack of file versioning is a big deal and something I hope they reconsider. I've been using Bitcasa since the day it was publicly available and I see a lot I like. As a backup/sync solution, it works well. However, I usually find Bitcasa too slow to use like a real hard drive.

  • BitCasa disappointed many customers when it stopped providing unlimited storage and the company’s reputation was heavily impacted by this decision. However, BitCasa has survived the controversy and has showed that its commitment to quality and ease of use remain strong. Compared to other providers, BitCasa is limited in terms of features and storage space, but if you are looking for simplicity and a well-designed software, they are still worth a look.

  • Bitcasa Drive offers high-capacity storage and operates more like an external drive - making it easy to backup, restore and access everything you need.

Some time ago, I saw something amazing in Bitcasa… they were offering unlimited cloud backup for a monthly fee of $10 bucks. I started to test it but I had to cancel it after a month because my internet upload speed was too slow… I’m not ready for full cloud backup. Now their offer has changed. For the same 10 dollars, they offer 1TB (just one cent more than Dropbox), and if you want more, you can pay $99 for 10 TB (but again that offer could be beaten by the $15 of an unlimited business account from Dropbox). So, what they say it’s different: Their file security uses an AES-256 block-level encryption and claims that this way they can’t access your data, I mean, they will not see your videos, photos or document’s content. The data will only be uploaded and kept in their cloud, and you will be the only one able to see it. This is very good compared to what we feel Google does with our files (Anyway I keep using Google). The Auto Backup process works in the background to upload the files, but this Bitcasa Drive works like a virtual drive on your computer. What you put in it goes to the cloud and can be kept there without a local copy, so this doesn’t work like the sync process of Dropbox.

    Pros :

    • You can store your files in the cloud and access to them from any device, but this goes beyond, if the file is a movie, you can watch / stream, it, if it is a document, you can see it, if is an audio file, you can play it.
    • You can share your files with Password protection helping you keep them under control.
    • Has a very well documented support section.

    Cons :

    • Requires a big upload bandwidth to get the full benefit of the cloud drive.

Bitcasa was founded in 2011 by former employees of Mastercard, VeriSign, Classmates.com, and Mozy. This means that the creators of the service are familiar with solutions for data backup online, as well as with safe file storage technologies. The initial idea of Bitcasa was to give everyone unlimited space for cloud storage. For this purpose, a special data deduplication algorithm was used. However, several years later, Bitcasa was forced to revisit the concept and to set the maximum volume for a user store. Today everyone is given 5 GB for free. The volume can be increased to 1 TB or 10 TB for the premium users. And what about security? Bitcasa encrypts files at the user side. All data is transmitted to the cloud in encrypted form. According to the creators, none of the employees of the company cannot access user data. If the user forgets the account password, it is possible to reset it by correctly answering two security questions selected during registration. By the way, Bitcasa’s encryption technology led to the problem because the employees really could not see which data belonged to the appropriate user. As a result, if the user stopped using the service all his data remained at the servers. After revamped infrastructure, the employees of the company know for sure which data belongs to the inactive accounts and can delete it. Competing in the file storage market is not easy. Moreover, Bitcasa has no competitive advantage (such as unlimited storage). So for now the company has faced to the enterprise developers. It offers the services for enterprise clients for building out products without having to manage the back-end cloud storage.

    Pros :

    • Good compatibility with all major desktop and mobile platforms.
    • Automatic backup.
    • Deleted files are stored on the server.

    Cons :

    • No more unlimited storage.
    • Sometimes the performance is slow.
